Hi guys! I was reading the instructions for 2018 AADSAS application, and came across the following instruction for providing info about volunteer experience.

Volunteer: Volunteer work done outside of the health care field; for example, working for Habitat for Humanity, tutoring students, participating in or working for a fundraiser walk or blood drive, etc.

I volunteered at a hospital as a patient escort, and my duties included discharging patients, and delivering specimens and supplies, etc.
Can I put this down as my volunteer experience? What does it imply when it stated "work done outside the health care field"?

Thank you!

The 2018-2019 AADSAS application has not opened yet - I'm not sure if you're just working ahead or are completing the 2017-2018 application. Regardless, your hospital experience should be described as follow: What the experience is - followed by your roles and responsibilities and lastly what skills you used/ learned/ improved upon. I'm not sure what you're referring to the last question. Hope that helps.

Hi, I meant I was just reading the instructions for 2018-19 application, and I am applying for the upcoming cycle. The manual for application instructions is on the website already
I was wondering if I can put down the hospital experience for volunteer because the instruction is stated as "Volunteer work done outside of the health care field". Does that mean if I volunteer in a health care environment (like hospital), I won't be able to include that as my volunteer experience?

I could be wrong, but a hospital setting sounds like it would be considered "within the health care field".

In the experiences section, you will be able to put your hospital experience.

Yes, I would say that you shouldn't list your hospital work under this question. I believe the question is trying to see diversity in your volunteer work, and that you're passionate about helping others in non-health related capacities too.

i think the issue is it isn’t a question, it’s just listing experiences, and there’s really no other category that fits better, as the categories are academic enrichment, dental shadowing, employment, extracurricular activities, and volunteering. So personally I think it should be fine to list hospital volunteering as an volunteering experience, since otherwise there’s no where else on the application to mention it, other than maybe the personal statement. Honestly I feel like adea just copies their definition of volunteering from other health care profession applications, as a bunch of them use the same definition. But on other applications, they also have a category to list health care experiences, whereas on aadsas there isn’t.

Hi guys, what about a full time paid dental assistant position? Would you put that in employment or shadowing? I am confused because it says for emplyment, lisr everything non health related.
