1) I am currently studying Swahili at my undergrad. I really enjoy learning Swahili, and the main reason why I study it is because I want to use it toward medical service in Africa--one of the main topics in my personal statement (I also have some Swahili ancestry). One option I have been thinking of recently is requesting a year deferment to study Swahili in Kenya. I would be planning and organizing this entire venture myself--no outside scholarships. Do you think medical schools would find this a suitable reason to grant me a deferral?

2) I've been accepted to two medical schools that are known for doling out generous financial/merit aid. If these schools would grant me my deferral, and also grant me a financial aid package, would this financial aid package remain unaltered during my year off? Would they rescind it?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Start medical school now. Get through your pre-clinical years and do well. Then take a year off between 2nd and 3rd years - use this time to earn an MPH and work on your Swahili.

Good luck to you!

You could simply write your letter requesting deferment and ask about the financial issue. If they say it's gone, then you can make the decision to continue or follow ^ plan.

I've never considered this route before. Interesting...
