In the interest of information sharing, I thought I would try to start a thread where we can ask those burning questions we have about specific residency programs, but might be better asked in an anonymous environment. 😳 Hopefully someone who knows the answer can either post it or PM it.

I'll go first.

Kaiser LA and Harbor-UCLA: Your board pass rates are pretty low. I have heard that programs with pass rates below 70% are in danger of being put on probation. What changes have you made help your residents prepare for their boards?

Utah:
Your program sounds great, but I have experienced religious discrimination in the past. What are the religious backgrounds of your residents? Do residents who don't share those beliefs seem to feel comfortable, or like an outsider hanging out with their classmates? (To anyone reading this: Please don't be offended, I am not automatically assuming that people who don't share my religious beliefs will discriminate against me. Yes, I may be assuming that a program like Utah might attract a stronger concentration of people who share a religious belief, but that is why I am asking. To find out if my assumption is incorrect. I am just trying to protect myself.)

This is a perfectly legitimate question and this needs to be asked during your interview. If their answer is "nothing" then you don't want to go here.

semi-burning question for no specific program in particular: how far down the ROL does program ______ usually have to go to fill the intern class?

Oh, I'm definitely curious about this one too, but I doubt we'll ever find out...

I would love to know the answer to this!

I think you'll find that Mormons are not the majority at the University of Utah...I lived in Utah, and am Mormon, but had numerous friends that were not and never felt there was any discrimination. As far as faculty, I think there are very few that are Mormon.

That being said, there are ignorant Mormons just like all religions have ignorant members...but, like in most religions, most are good people just tring to do what's right.

Thanks for the reply! If anyone else has extra input, I would appreciate that as well. I am not Christian, and that seems to be what throws people off sometimes (some people love it because I am willing to work every Christmas!)

I think you should feel completely free to ask questions like these at your interview, especially the first one. Remember that residency programs are selling to you as much as you are to them. They want you to rank them and they want to see how you'll fit in with their current residents. Any place who's hostile to that line of questioning isn't some place you want to go, provided you don't ask like a cocky @$$.

That and a good majority of Mormons are VEEERY nice... Like super happy, always smiling, smothereingly nice. 😛
Though that's not to say that there's not a fair amount of stuck up ones too.🙄

This may be true, but as a non-Mormon who lived in Utah for many years (and rotated there once upon a time), it can often feel like Mormons are the majority. I could pretty much guarantee that you will not feel any outright discrimination. Everyone does seem to be genuinely thoughtful and kind in daily interactions. There are some non-Mormons in their program now, and it seems like everyone gets along fine. However, as an outside member among any sort of homogeneous culture, there are enough subtle things to consider that I think your concerns are valid.

(And I, too, wanted to ask questions of diversity when I rotated there, but didn't, perhaps regretfully so. Good of you to bring it up).

i was initially rejected to a program, my SO went there and then i got an interview...so i wish my question would have been:

So, what are my chances of matching here, seeing that you rejected me the first time....
