Hello everyone. I'm aware that you should try and get scientific publications, but I wanted to know if other publications are still useful to have (do they still count?). I submitted a pretty crappy poem to poetry.com and they sent me a letter (for the 2nd time) that my poem has been selected for publication. I know that site is a scam and stuff, but wanted to get your opinions on this. Thank You.

in my unqualified opinion, i think that it would look interesting that you were selected to be published for your poetry, so it's a really nice outside interest that you are getting some recognition for, but i would not put this on the same level as a scientific publication (which i don't think you're trying to do)

Thank you for replying, your feedback is appreciated. Yes, you are correct. I plan on having a few scientific publications before I apply to med school as well. I was just wondering if there is a spot on the AMCAS application where I could talk about this. Anyone else want to buzz in on this?
(The deadline for the poem publication is coming soon, that's why I want to know).

Thanks!

Thank you very much

I also think this would be a good thing to put in your application. Though, if you really think it's a scam, you probably shouldn't. If you're just saying it's a scam in order to be modest, then put it in your application.

Basically, what I'm saying is that the poems are nothing extraordinary (compared to people like Edgar Allen Poe 😀 ). They are pretty simple, but they make sense (my teacher's like them). This is the 2nd time that they've sent me an invitation to be published, so I figured that I'd ask my fellow SDNers if it were worth it. Thnx!

I have a poem on that site that I put up for the hell of it. I agree that it's a scam though...I mean what legit publisher sends you constant mailings saying "we love your poem, we want to publish it, for $x you could see it in this lovely volume..." I didn't put it on AMCAS and have nothing published at all, yet I've gotten interviews at 10 of 11 schools applied to. So don't sweat it I think clinical and research experience, volunteering, ECs, your essay and LORs, if you can get these down, you're good.

yeah, poetry.com is a scam. it might look good to say that you have poetry published, or... the adcom people will also know poetry.com is a scam, and then you're that guy who got scammed and is trying to brag about it. it's a slippery slope, you might be better off shootin' some xrays at some protein and then publishing it's structure... a surefire way while hardly lifting a finger 🙂.

I wouldn't put it if you yourself describe it as "crappy." I mean, if you are being modest, then get rid of that trait RIGHT NOW. If it is truly crappy, you don't want to be in the awkward situation of having your interviewer asking you to share the poem with him, and then you are embarrassed by how craptacular the thing is. What will your scientific pubs be?

Ok, thanks for all of the replies. I guess that I'll list it under awards, but I won't get it published. Thanks! 🙂

Basically, you sign up (free) and submit a couple of poems to them. If your poem is somewhat creative, they'll send you a letter saying "Dear (insert name), your poem was selected by our panel of judges for its originality. If you would like to get published in this years volume of (insert book name), please send $XX to the following address."

Poetry.com is a fraud publishing organization that features it's online writing contest; they were even featured on ABC's 20/20: http://windpub.com/literary.scams/abc-nlp.htm. Poetry.com literally accepts 100% of applicants as 'Semi-finalists' in their 'international poetry competition' and sends a letter to the poor victims. For more information, visit: http://www.eliteskills.com/writing_scams/poetry.com.scam.php.
ummm. yah. then you definitely shouldn't do this.
why not submit your poetry to a REAL writing competition?

Thanks for clarifying that poetry.com is a scam.

The girl with a beautiful smile--> At first I didn't know it was a scam. I was just looking online for poetry competitions and that website was the first to come up, so I tried it out. I kind of figured that it was a scam, now I know for sure.

Thanks SDNers!

😎

oh yah. sorry. i guess my message sounds a little snotty. i realize that you didn't know it was a scam at first... i was more in disbelief about how big of a scam it is... I mean the amount of press they received and everything.

i meant that now that you know its a really big scam, you should definitely look for other real competitions.

sorry again. i type fast messages that sometimes have a different tone than i meant them to have. :/
