when an applicant gets invited for an interview, does this mean that the school is really interested, or does it just mean that's what they'd do anyway?
My freind tells me that if you get invited to an interview, it means that you're pretty much accepted in terms of your academic records (GPA, etc), and the only thing left for the school is to see your personality, and whether or not they like it.

Is this true?? or is there more to it?
Thanks everyone.

I think they just want to find out if you have a third arm growing out of your head. I'm sorry if I offended anybody with arms growing out of their head. It is the final test involved in the admission process. Must of the interviews felt like conversations. I think they did more talking than I did. I was accepted to all four schools that I got an interview in. I am no master of the skill of communication by any means.

Another thing... usually how long after an interview do schools let you know if you're accepted or not? what's the typical waiting time? Or does it vary with school?

Thanks

If the school has rolling admissions, then you could find out if you were accepted within a few weeks. If it does not have rolling admissions then there will probably be a set date that they give you when acceptance letters are typically mailed out. For me, the rolling admissions schools responded the next day to FOUR weeks later. For the schools that did not have rolling admissions, the wait time from interview to final decision letter was about three months. It does vary by school though, so contact the admissions office to see how they handle their decisions.

I think it depends on the school as to how much weight the interview holds. Getting an interview is a great thing, since they definitely weed a lot of people out before that point. I wouldn't consider it to be "pretty much accepted" as they stated. Just think of it as another step in the process, a step that is much closer to the goal.

Finding out also depends on the school. Our school has rolling admissions... some people find out the same week, others are held in a "pool" and the final decisions are not made until mid April. (for the fall semester)

pharmagirl, where do you go to school?

Interview is a very important process, especially if your academic records are not as strong as others (this doesn't mean strong academic record would guarantee the admission spot, however).

Last year, I know a couple of people who have very strong GPA (3.9 with BS in BioChemistry, good reputation, etc...but still failed the admission for my pharmacy school (USN) due to the poor performance at the interview.

So you should do pretty well on this and it's worthy to prepare ahead when time is still in your hands. Good luck 😉
