I met with one of my professors I had a few semesters ago because he agreed to write me a LOR and he asked me what schools I was thinking about. I mentioned a few M.D. schools and the rest D.O. He mentioned the idea that I might think about applying to strictly D.O. schools and no M.D. schools (My GPA is around 3.4) because the D.O. schools might think I am using them as a second option to the allopathic schools. Any thoughts? Thanks. 😎

Well, which philosophy do you prefer? If you just like the idea of being a doctor then why not apply to both? I only applied DO cause I like that philosophy better. They will ask you on interviews why only one or why both, so just make sure you have a good answer. 👍

I just said it was a numbers game. I wanted to only be in a few places and only applied to schools in those places. They were fine with it. Besides no one knows if you apply to both.

I've often wondered the same thing. I plan on applying to 2 allopathic schools only bc I could commute and keep my kids in the same school. I probably wouldn't even bother applying to one of those, but my uncle went there and is willing to write an alumni letter. (Don't know what that'll do.) I'd really prefer a DO program and am nervous that they may think that I'm using them as a backup but in actually, I'm secretly hoping I don't get accepted to the allopathic schools. (Which is highly probable.) I'd really like to know the answer to the OP's question also.

AMCAS and AACOMAS are two different application systems....

No one will know you're applying to MD unless you tell them.
Having said that, if you do tell them you're applying to MD too, you should be prepared to answer questions like: why DO (almost guaranteed you will be asked this question), how will you choose which school to attend if you get multiple acceptances? etc etc

Yeah, I know that my 1st choice asks this on their secondary. (OSU) And it's hard enough to get in there OOS.

apply to where you want to go. m.d. /d.o. is your choice. you do have a better shot at getting into a d.o. school your prof was right on that.

if you do apply to both you have 2 options
1) lie. they don't know you filled out your aacomas.
2) tell them why. and make sure you have a good answer.

I have a m.d. interview coming up and i'm not comfortable with lying about it so i'm going to tell them the truth. i'll just explain to them that either path i choose, i will be a doctor. (don't say u like the osteopathic phil. better bc then why would you ever want to do a m.d. program!)
