When a pharmacist is getting a transferred prescription from another pharmacy, what does it mean when the other pharmacist says the number of refills are "10 plus 1"? Does that mean there were 11 original refills authorized and now 10 are being transferred over?

No, 10 + 1 means dispense 1 now and put 10 refills on the label. So you'll owe them 10 refills after they pick it up from you at this visit. The pharmacist gave it to you this way b/c if he said 10 refills then you might interepret it as this time plus 9 refills or this time plus 10 refills and it would get confusing for anyone including myself. And in cali you don't really need to record the original # of refills only the original date and last time dispensed with remaining refills, among other things ofcourse.
Hope this helps.

I usually say it as 1 + X but it as someone else said, it's today's fill plus however many refills remain.

Alternately I make a little list on the new hardcopy I'm making and include the following items:

Written (WR)
Original Fill (OF)
Last Fill (LF)
Refills Remaining (RR)

If you're doing a transfer and the other RPH says something you don't understand, be sure you ask. Likewise, if you're doing input and you see something on a hardcopy you don't understand, ask the pharmacist. It's always better to ask than to assume!

I like 1+X, I don't care for "270 tabs coming to you". Number of tabs, really? 🙄

Both work just fine of course, and number of tabs is actually better if the patient has had a partial fill at some point. Always ask if you are not sure about something.
