Hi Everyone,

Can anyone suggest a quick way to average these weights: 3 lbs 4 oz, 9 lb 6 oz, 8 lb 7 oz? The way I would normally approach this is to convert everything to ounces, sum the ounces, and then divide by three. Do you know of something that works better?

add all the pounds 3+9+8=20
and allthe onuces 7+6+4=17 which is one more then 16(as one pound=16 onuces)
so answer should be around 21.06 or something close to this

Don't forget to divide this number by 3 as the question is asking for the average. But yes, that's a faster way.

Or you could take 20x16 if you want and get 320. Then 320+17 = 337. When you divide by 3 you get 112 1/3 oz. Divide by 16 to get 7 lb, 1/3 oz.

Still a bit on the long side but you get a more 'exact' answer.

With the other method you would have 20 lbs 17 oz which is 21 lbs 1 oz. Then divide by 3 and get 7 lb 1/3 oz. That's probably the easiest in this case. But you won't always get the simplicity of 21/3 = an integer.

Thanks, guys. I appreciate the suggestions. They've helped.
