NCCN says consider no RT for early breast cancer >75yo, Kyle 😉
I wonder if insurance companies will ever set a 5 fraction limit for this group (they should probably)
idk how much change is actually possible for them to pull off but for sure RFK/Elon/Doge are not fans of paying doctors more. only less.
Then again, why would ASTRO leadership with involvement in a residency program say any of that?
- Increased supply of ROs (+16%) is outpacing cancer incidence growth (+4%).
- Fewer fractions per patient (due to hypofractionation and guidelines) reduces revenue.
- Reimbursement per fraction is decreasing with CPT code revisions and prior authorization hurdles.
- Consolidation limits negotiation power, keeping salaries stagnant despite rising workload.
EBRT would be ROCR'd and then Brachy would be FFS was my understanding. Otherwise lots of cervical cancer patients are going to die unnecessarily. As brachy is excluded from ROCR, how would doing combination of EBRT + HDR at the same institution for cervical cancer work? Hospital will get bundled payment for EBRT and just eat brachy costs?
And yet, that's not how it was going to be in RO model (if I recall right, hospitals were expected to eat brachy boost costs)EBRT would be ROCR'd and then Brachy would be FFS was my understanding. Otherwise lots of cervical cancer patients are going to die unnecessarily.
Correct - that was a change from RO-APM.And yet, that's not how it was going to be in RO model (if I recall right, hospitals were expected to eat brachy boost costs)
?A residency shuts down and not a peep from SDN? Must be slow these days![]()
?????
Which program???A residency shuts down and not a peep from SDN? Must be slow these days![]()
UVA is shutting down (heard through grapevine, no actual confirmation)
I heard it from 2 sources now. I thought they were a decent mid tier program at least a few years agoThere were rumblings on Reddit/Discord that they didn't match this year and did not participate in the SOAP. Highly doubt they are shutting down.

Looks like when it comes to rumors of a rad onc residency shutting down, SDN can be a little...There were rumblings on Reddit/Discord that they didn't match this year and did not participate in the SOAP. Highly doubt they are shutting down.
It's too bad, if true. I remember reading there are some very fine people there.Looks like when it comes to rumors of a rad onc residency shutting down, SDN can be a little...

UVA has bigger problemsThey should be commended for doing something that a lot of programs should be doing!
Apparently they weren't the only program who did thisThere were rumblings on Reddit/Discord that they didn't match this year and did not participate in the SOAP.
Apparently they weren't the only program who did this
I think not SOAPing allows them to possibly offer the spots outside of the match during the year
I'm guessing there were a lot more than 5 unfilled slots this year when you consider programs that chose not to soap but will offer spots out of the match
Do you know which programs went unfilled and which one of them soap’d?Well that would be accounted for if the were in the match. It was 5
Programs with unfilled spots and 3 programs who chose to soap
Do you know which programs went unfilled and which one of them soap’d?
Thanks. I just looked it up. There were Jefferson, Stony Brook and Brooklyn Methodist. The soap programs I saw on the google doc. One of them was Jefferson and other twoI think were NY programs?
I can’t imagine that mid tier academic training programs have been particularly pleasant places to work or train. At least in the past there was a light at the end of the tunnel and there was a chance you could work with some bright imaginative faculty and residents…no more it seems.jeff is such a nasty program.
You know it's funny, I interviewd at Jefferson in the halycon days of 2006. You can even find my review on SDN if you care to look. I tried to be a bit more constructive with my review but, even back then, the vibe was "I'd rather not match than do residency at Jeff."jeff is such a nasty program.

What are we going to do about the obvious future shortage of radiation oncologists in the state of Virginia that these closures will undoubtedly cause???Allegheny was the 5th program that didn't match anyone, and didn't participate in SOAP.
Interesting, UVA actually didn't participate in the match. VCU was the 4th that didn't match, and appears not to have SOAPed, but in the past they have just used them as reserved spots in the following match.
Ripe candidate for the next program closure (Drexel's cousin on the other side of the state!)Allegheny was the 5th program that didn't match anyone, and didn't participate in SOAP.
You didn't want to be one of "Wally's Angels"?!You know it's funny, I interviewd at Jefferson in the halycon days of 2006. You can even find my review on SDN if you care to look. This is why I am opening a new residency, can't stand the thought of there being any open jobs. What are we going to do about the obvious future shortage of radiation oncologists in the state of Virginia that these closures will undoubtedly cause???
The rumors are correct
