Radiology 2012 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Lucky ducks. Still no love from UM, UVA, Wake, Pitt.

If the number of dates left to choose from is any indication, Pitt still has a number of dates open, so may see more waves. Wake may be nearing the end though. Regarding Umich & UVA, I have no idea

Yeah i'm hoping to get an interview at Pitt, but not enough so that I would email them or anything, so I'm just waiting and seeing.

Must really want that interview lol

Not to discourage anyone, but patty emailed me and said only a few days (3 I believe) were still available, maybe 2 now, I think nov 10 and Jan 12.

Haha I can join the community prelim program rejection club now 🙂

Probably gonna be relatively quiet this week and especially next week. Any program that hasn't granted interviews by now might as well wait for the Dean's Letter. The big one that would appear to offer at least some dates pre-MSPE is Hopkins, but nothing yet....

Who knows what programs are doing. Got another IV today. For the past 2 weeks I've gotten 1 a week so at worst this week is going to equal the previous 2.

So now I'm up to 3/15 lol.

you got rejected by a prelim surg program? that"s surprising

Yeah, a community one no less. Apparently I'm not the "caliber" of applicant they're looking for and others have "qualifications" that better suit their needs.

Anybody been on any TY/Prelim IVs yet?

I feel pretty prepared in terms of knowing what questions to anticipate for Radiology, but no idea what questions they will ask for prelim IVs.

Idk, this happened to be one of my top choices (st lukes-roosevelt).

they're not mind readers. they see a research nerd with high scores from Wisconsin and are like "yeah right, let's not waste our time, next."

IMO programs worrying about yield protecting should ask applicants why they have applied there. And it's not like people pan apply to prelim surg; there's obviously a reason why a strong rads applicant from Wisconsin is interested in their program and they should investigate.

I understand it a little bit more for rads because there are a lot of strong applicants out there and people apply to a lot of programs. It's still annoying though. I definitely would have gone to a UAB interview and although Birmingham would have not been my ideal location, leaving Cali for the first time for med school wasn't ideal but it's worked out very well so far.

I can't hate on programs doing what they think is best for them though

my first interview is tomorrow and I don't feel prepared at all ughh

good luck! Don't worry about being unprepared, you probably are if you're even worried about it. Just make sure you know everything on the school's website. Know a few things about their program, review your ERAS app to remember what you actually wrote. And most importantly, be yourself, rehearsed answers sound ******ed. Just be honest and you'll be fine

Are you guys trying to go to all the pre-interview dinners? They're hard to make if you're trying to group interviews sometimes!

Anyone here get that "first round" invite from Cornell? Saw folks talking about it on AM.

Trying to go on as many as possible, but I won't cancel a radiology interview or move heaven and earth in order to be able to attend a pre-interview dinner, unless the language of the interview confirmation e-mail suggests as such (STRONGLY ENCOURAGED in caps, for example).

so far, only 2 out of 15 programs i have interviews with even have a dinner. One of them is my home institution which makes even that one redundant. But yeah, I'll try to go.

Interesting, every single program I've been invited to has had a dinner. How many programs are you planning to interview at?

I'm thinking of skipping my prelim dinners.
The ones I've been to thus far all end up like this:

"So what are interested in doing in Medicine?"
-I'm actually applying to Radiology, I'm applying for a prelim spot here.
".......Cool, I'm going to go talk to our categorical applicants"

Repeat x every person in the room not the PD or prelim residents.

Lol, none of my prelim (or my TY's) have dinners. We don't really need a dinner. They just want someone decent who will do the work and I just want a decent sched in a good location.

I have 7 programs onmy list that I think are legitimate options. the other 8 I don't even like, but I haven't really settled on a finite number yet and haven't cancelled any yet. I most likely will start cancelling the week after the deans letter goes out and those programs start their first wave of invites. I over applied to a lot of weaker programs that I no longer care for. But even some of the better programs that I am interested in (penn state, tufts, beth israel) don't have dinners either.

edit: I should clarify, it's not that I think poorly of those 8, its just that for whatever reason they're less desirable to me. I dont want a program with 2-3 residents, 5 minimum in my book. I also don't want to go back to where I spent 5 years of undergrad for another 4-5 years of residency. And the other programs are just in undesirable locations.

just want to say good luck to all the 2012 applicants! Ill probably see some of youse soon...

Go to the dinners early and always pick the middle seat. Sitting at the end of the table is the absolute worst. haha good luck all you bright young docs!!!👍

I feel like a drug addict going through rehab, having good days and bad days. This past week has been bad, not hearing a peep from anyone. Then today, the TY & radar gods have been kind to me. Man, I don't know if I can take this rollercoaster of emotions much longer; each time I check the AM invite thread and see it's been updated, I start having palpitations

So what would you guys say are "red flags" for a program? I feel like on my aways that everyone is on their "best behavior" so I never know if I'm getting a honest POV of the pgrm?

Night float?
Pimping during lectures?
Grad placement?
Ultrasound tech coverage?
Old PACS?

Just trying to get a feel now that most ppl have done at least one away

2012 Candidate

I think the things you list are far less important than how happy the residents are generally. Ask how often they work weekends, how much call, how much fellows are involved...

As the threats of budget costs to imaging are here, it may not be bad to be ultrasound trained.

I'm going to try to make all of my IV dinners. Its the only real way of seeing how well the residents get along.

I'm getting bombarded by ActiveGolf! Glad Im not the only one getting harassed during interview season haha

I'm getting bombarded by spam from mass gen about everything EXCEPT an interview invite. They keep giving me crap about other tracks that I am not interested in, especially since theyre all various internal medicine tracks. I keep thinking it's an interview email and then it's some other stupid thing

me too! so excited.

All day, every day. I just finished a rotation in the bay on Friday and stayed through the weekend for my 5 yr college reunion. Made me fall in love with Cali all over again

2nd rejection received today (UF-Gainesville)

I appreciate them not keeping me in a holding pattern any longer, makes it easier to plan out interviews.

I applied to 26 programs. I have received 13 offers and haven't heard anything from the other 13. I declined 2/13 offers. The Carolina's are hating on my application so far, but the central/midwest/south has been really good. No rejections yet. I think there are only a couple programs I will still interview at if offered (MIR, Vanderbilt). We'll see, interviewing is expensive!

I've gotten 0 invites so far, any advice?

DO applicant
Top 5% of class
Step 1 245+ step 2 265+
Clinicals: 50/50 honors/hp
Some minimal non-rads research, 0 publications though
Issues: No official rads rotations yet (scheduled for early 2012) and no rads LORs yet, both bc changed my career choice late in app season
ECs: bunch of volunteer, a few leadership positions, etc

Applied to 20ish progs in Midwest, obviously now thinking I need to add a bunch more across country
Thanks for any advice

20 seems pretty low, I would probably bump that a bit. Not having rads letters probably was suboptimal.

I applied to 40 programs, received 7 interviews out of 16 schools I applied to that have offered anyone, 24 haven't sent out any invites yet, one rejection.

I applied to 13 prelim surgery programs and a bunch of categorical programs, so far, only one interview (from my top choice) and one rejection, most of the programs I applied to haven't offered anyone yet, though.

Im a third year DO student. Im not applying for obvious reasons, but I am confused about the prelim year or TY for rads programs. Do you apply to the prelim and match, then at the end of the prelim year apply to the rads program and match. or do you apply to both the prelim and rads program and match both at the same time.

Almost everyone applies to both at once.
