Radiology 2012 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Dear UCSF and Stanford: It's now mid-November. I'm feeling good on account of NYU. Let's rip the band-aid off. I'm ready, let's do this.

Dear Duke: please give me an interview. I'm not afraid of Durham. You probably have the best educational experience in the country.

Dear MGH: I am convinced that your slow trickle of invites is deliberately designed to drive the more neurotic applicants among us crazy.

Dear BWH: December 1st. Seriously?

Dear UCSF, Stanford, UCSD, and UCLA: If you don't love your own, who will? (Especially you Stanford)

Dear Duke: If I can accept Baltimore I can accept Durham

Dear UCLA again: November 30th? Seriously?

Dear MGH and BWH: Beth Israel tempered my expectations. Prove them wrong.

The UCSF PD told me last week that they were still going through the process and it might be a couple weeks; hopefully it'll happen this wk but who knows.

ugh, just bought 3 flights, ouch.

So I tried super hard to do this whole med school thing without taking out any of those Grad Plus loans. I can't do it anymore.... I pinched every penny and hit up Bank of Mom/Dad, but this whole residency thing is too much. I can't even make December's rent at this rate. I'm going to have to ask my parents for like 500$. Next semester I'm probably just gonna take out enough Grad Plus to pay them back and to have enough for moving expenses.

On a brighter note, although I'm 85$ poorer, I was able to apply to a handful of surgical prelims, including some that were past deadline. I gave them an email and have had good responses thus far. One of the programs said they interview Prelims via SKYPE. Sounds great to me! Here is to at least securing a PGY-1!

Yeah, actually I'm getting super lucky with priceline, I booked mke-pit-dal-mke for like $400 total, and managed to get hotels for $40/night and rental cars for $30 inc tax at both places, still, it's a pretty brutal schedule.

Duke bringing the hammer today. 2/13 in the South if you include Texas. Well F you then too

Got Duke, now fully ready for the California pain train.

Congrats man. I know you really wanted that one.

Loma Linda just went out. They only have 4 dates. Who do they think they are? Stanford? NYU? lol

Looks like app season is starting to come together well for people for the most part 👍

Yeah man looks like you're cleaning up in Cali... Strong work

Yeah I've had quite the turnaround post-MSPE. Hopefully it continues.

For the regional bias everyone mentions, I think it matters a lot less where you did med school if you have very strong ties to another area of the country.

I can understand the Southern backlash considering I was born and raised in SoCal, did undegrad in the Bay, and listed my current and permanent addresses in Cali. If I was a PD I would look at my app like "this Cali guy probably can't wait to get out of the South. And he while he handled Atlanta he can't handle Nashville/Birmingham/Gainesville/Chapel Hill etc."

Jeebus, busy day...phone won't stop dinging...good to finally know though

I wonder if I should send a letter of interest/update letter to MGH and Cornell, especially as the MGH trickle continues (applying from CA school). I've gotten a number of competitive interviews (Hopkins, Penn, MIR, U Wash, Duke), so maybe it would not be a complete long-shot, but do not want to annoy them either.

Those programs probably assume everyone who applies would love to come there so a letter of interest probably wouldn't help.

Anyone apply to the radiology program in Puerto Rico or know when they'll be giving out interviews?

For people interviewing at Northwestern:

Would anybody be willing to switch interview dates with me? I'm scheduled for Jan 10 and am hoping for Jan 19 or 24.

Out of curiosity, are you fluent in Spanish? Cuz I'm pretty sure that's a requirement to go there.

And for the hell of it, whoever asked if anyone would be at Minnesota today, I was.

I am, that's why I applied! 🙂 I called a couple of times today, but could not get in touch with anyone. I also looked on AM and I saw that there is no statement of them having sent out IV's, but figured that few people apply to the program.

You're a board certified dermatologist but would go to Puerto Rico to work for minimum wage? You hate derm that much?

Look at her old posts. She went unmatched for derm during the 2009 match, then disappeared off SDN for several years.

So even if she scrambled or matched the following year, she has either quit or been fired from a derm program.

I'm not board certified, I'll be finishing up shortly before I would start a rads residency, and yes, I really do not like derm I'm sorry to say. I'm not sure why you dislike me so much, or why my posts are so inflammatory to you.

I want to go into rads, is that so hard to believe? Am I not allowed to change my mind and want to go into a different specialty? Is that so wrong of me?

For your info, I scrambled into a position. I have neither been fired nor have I quit. What is so wrong of me wanting to change specialties? I'm perplexed to see that my posts are so closely scrutinized, and that I can't simply ask questions like others on the board.

It's so terrible for me to want to be a radiologist? Really?

I don't dislike you, I just think the whole situation is odd.

Your whole story just doesn't add up. If you scrambled in the 2009 match you would still have two years left to complete a derm residency.

That's fine, you have a right to your opinions, but I have my reasons for doing what I am doing. There is nothing odd about the situation. Is it really necessary for you to judge me? Why not have a good attitude and say hey this person wants to switch into this field, let's see if I have anything of value to tell her when she asks a question. I don't question/judge your reasons for going into radiology, do I? I guess I'll make you happy and stop posting. Best of luck to you.

Read above. I never said I was done with residency. I'm simply smart enough to not leave something if I can't get something else. Thanks for judging me though.

Whatever. Anyways, I canceled a couple interviews today, maybe it'll help some people here.

Just out of curiosity why are you switching?

Why didn't you chose rads the 1st go around? (not knocking you as plenty of people switch specialties)

Officially done with radiology until R1 starts 🙁

feels kinda weird.. and sad

I initially was attracted to derm due to very serious personal/family issues with derm conditions. I never really considered anything other than derm really. Some things have changed in my life recently, and I need a different/better suited specialty. I find many aspects of rads appealing, and that's why I want to go into it.

You posted this just two weeks ago 😕

So I completed a residency, was going to go into fellowship but decided that I'd like to go into Radiology. Sadly it took me a while and my applications to radiology were kinda late, about last week.

Are people starting to put together a skeleton rank order list? I feel like mine is starting to come together a little bit.

Have only been on 2 interviews so not yet. But I did have a quickly put together rank list of every program I applied to (for quick reference for date conflicts) so after interviews are finalized I'm just going to use that to start.
