Hello everybody, this is my frist time posting on this website. I was just wondering what electives and sub internships i should be doing if I am interested in a radiology residency. Thanks

Nothing? What about something like pathology?

Really, do whatever you want. The only time this came up in interviews was:

A) What has been your exposure to radiology? - So make sure you've done at least your place's core radiology rotation, I'd also recommend at least one away or a subspecialty rotation (IR, Neuro, Peds, whatever). Show's you're actually interested in the material.

B) What rotation are you on now? This is just making conversation, I think. Anywho, I was actually on interesting rotations during my interview season so it was cool to talk about them and how the attendings/residents were teaching me radiology from their subspecialty areas point of view. But if you're in a blow-off rotation because you need time off to interview, or on vacation, I don't think there's any "Meat" to this question.

C) What non-radiology rotation did you enjoy the most? Enjoy the least? For me, this was an easy question because it was in the field that I was considering versus radiology. It just shows you have passion for medicine in general. As for least: I said OB/GYN and the interviewer said "Yeah, everyone says that one.' so I think it's a safe bet 🙂

I would say surgery since it's anatomy intensive, just like radiology

Who cares!!

No one ever asked me what subi i am on or took.

They just want to chill in interviews. i miss interviews 😡 - met some awesome ppl in awesome places - no one cares about your subis or your scrub size of anything about 4th year all that much. On my interviews I talked about (True list)

awesome shoes sold on sepulveda blv., public transit flaws and benefits, my dead dog, my long distance boyfriend, passionate talks about mexican food, discussions about windows made of marble so thin it lets light in, Tv shows I like (the Hills, John&kate + 8, Family guy & South park), and the usual ice breaker : tell me about your city/how did u get here/ what did you do last night.

Now mind you - you did ask which to get into RESIDENCY not which to better myself as a servant to interns.

I picked Neuro/Uro Surgery bc they have awesome imaging and confrence with rads once a week. Just do something you like. You would be surprised how little anatomy you learn in a surgery. It is a usually elective services i.e. choli's x3 everyday for a month.

For electives, would suggest doing something that utilizes imaging in day to day practice - ortho, neurosurg, urology. These guys look at their own images and make their own interpretation most of the time. If you're truly interested in radiology, it's good to get a perspective from the referring clinicians.
