I am interested in radiology, and I have a few questions that are not thoroughly addressed in the other threads.

What procedures do diagnostic rads do?

How hard is to get a fellowship, what kind of fellowship?

How much is malpractice insurance? in illinois?

Do rads docs get sued frequently?

What kind of patient contact, if any, is there is diag rads?

Will salaries and lifestyle remain so lucrative, or will insurance companies also crack down on rads eventually?

Thanks guys

Information reguarding procedures can be found in other threads.

Malpratice insurance varies from state to state and region to region. Ask your local radiologists how much it costs for malpractice insurance is for the area in illinois that you are interested in.

I remember hearing that the average malpractice insurance for radiology is around $30K, but I do not have a direct reference.

Rads docs get sued infrequently, mostly over mammography and interventional procedures.

DR still do a majority of the biospies, occasionally go into scan patients during ultrasound examinations, and perform flouroscopic procedures such as upper gi series with small bowel follow through, barium enema, etc, flouroscopic guided arthrograms for joint imaging, etc. But these compromise I'd say around 5-10% of your daily activities depending on how subspecialized your group has become, the referral pattern, and any fellowship training you may have.

Lifestyle is getting worse and salaries are going up. Nobody has a crystal ball as to what the insurance companies will do and how quickly this will be done. However there are always new technologies and new applications of technologies to keep the radiologist busy.
