Hey, Rads! What is your opinion of radiologic technologists?

I just graduated rad tech school December 2008. My interactions with radiologists have varied from warm and inviting to downright hateful.

Do you have any advice for me, a new graduate, something you've always wanted to tell your technologists? Don't do this, or always have this prepared for me?

I want to be a very good tech! Share with me your knowledge!

Radiologists depend on a the technologist immensely. Technologists do certain things much more frequently and are far better at actually acquiring the pictures. I definitely have very high impression of ultrasound technicians. A good ultrasound tech that you can trust saves you tons of time and essentially all ultrasound interpretation is about trusting the tech.

I've only seen them get along great while shadowing radiologists.

Two things a tech can do to make a Radiologist MUCH happier.

1) Take 10 seconds to fill out a reason for the study in the request form instead of putting a) "Rule out ____" b) renaming the study such as "PE protocol" or c) just "pain" and nothing else. It makes the Radiologists job soooo much easier to have a real history. I promise you they will notice and like you for it.

2) When you have a question or want to talk about a study you just did, don't stand behind the Radiologist acting like your issue is always urgent, requiring their immediate attention, either interrupting them or doing subtle things to show that you are there and want to be addressed....if there is nothing acute about the situation! Unless it really is an emergency (which 98% of the time it's not), just wait a minute or two until the Radiologist finishes what he is doing and gets to a stopping point. You would probably get really annoyed if someone constantly interrupted you while you were trying to do your job for something that could clearly wait a couple of minutes. I also promise you that Radiologists will notice and really respect you, especially if you do have something that occasionally is urgent.
