Raise your hand if you got 3.5+gpa and 32 MCAT but none, one or 2 interviews!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My MCAT was 34, but else close enough. 2 interviews, both waitlisted...

dont give up...keep hope alive

Maybe the fact that you have not received more interviews has something to do with the quality of your character?

Most medical schools do not look favorably on those who disparage URMs. In fact, I am not sure any medical schools do, thankfully.

I dont think you understood the POV or the purpose of our skirmish the other day. Do you remember what I typed before signing off?

can i join? i got a 31 and a 3.7gpa.

Applied to 20 MD schools (didn't research my list, just went by names i knew off hand) got 2 interviews
1 acceptance, 1 waitlist

my app was kinda late though (mid october)

All I did was answer your question.

That thread says a lot about who you are.
No, I don't take it lightly when someone disparages necessary efforts to correct past racial injustice. It is personal, and I have staked my life in serving the underprivileged until we achieve a truly fair and equal society.

Hey what school was that, were your scores over qualified for them.

I have a 3.8 GPA and 33 MCAT, yes all waitlisted or rejected before even seeing me

let's try to keep things friendly in here.

Just trying to answer the OP's original question. Medical schools want to know if you are a "good" person and making light of underprivileged groups is not the best way to convince them you are. A grade point average and MCAT score are not all that matter, I hope!

How would the medical schools have any idea if one is a closet racist or not?

Thats not what this thread is about. If you want, start a new one, or send me a PM and Ill discuss it with you there.

Well, why would he make a thread like that? Maybe he was just looking for a strong reaction, but more likely, it was an actual reflection of his beliefs. It is reasonable to conclude that through interviews, recommendations, personal statements, and secondary applications, committee members can gain a fairly accurate picture of what someone is truly like. Maybe not always, but I hope the process works most of the time!

Oh, and I am Canadian, EH!

Best of luck Ian! Although I think you might want to unlink your mdapps in light of your extremely controversial posts. It does not come off very well, even from someone who is on your side. Good luck to everyone!

Why must you end all of your posts with an exclamation point!

I think the point in making a thread like that is somewhat rhetoric, saying that a "URM" is poorly defined.

I don't think it would be difficult though to hide racist beliefs from personal statements and secondaries. Would someone write you a letter of recommendation if they were going to write a poor one? I thought that they would just decline the offer.

AllaboutUCSF,

Could you say my controversial posts helped you gain a stronger perception of yourself and why your self-image is important to you?

We're all here to help each other, even if its by making stupid comments to attract attention.

And I like to learn too. I know thats what I did.

Anybody there or are you all speechless?

😕

Its SLU. i guess im about average for their standards. The reason i think i was accepted though was because i had a really good letter from a general surgeon who graduated from there, and i grew up in a town of 10,000. Med schools go gaga for that rural small town thing.

3.6 gpa 39 mcat from an engineering school.

I applied to 4 schools and only received 1 interview. 🙁

We should start our own lonely hearts club band 🙁

I knew I wanted to stay in state, so no point in applying to schools that I will never attend.

3.5 GPA
27 MCAT
Applied 12 schools
10 Interviews
5 Acceptances (all at top 40 schools)

If you are not getting in you are applying to too few places, the wrong places, or you lived in the library and have no extra-curriculars...🙂

What were ur extracurriculars like?

I did mainly research in college. I think one of my major problem was that I talked too much about research and too little about my clinical volunteering work.

I'm still majorly bummed that Emory did not give me an interview though.

Uhh... he didn't walk into the interview disparaging underprivileged groups

Calling out others based on irrelevant personal differences isn't quite a demonstration of "good character" either

Are you following the OP around bashing his character now? Please, just drop it. You're not contributing to the thread very much.

Btw, yea, 3.5, 33mcat. 1 interview.

I disagree. Chose the 18 schools from MSAR. 18 schools. I have my share of ECs.

that's one crazy GPA 😀

?

I think my BCMP is killing me though mainly due to a dual enrollment course in last semester of HS that I never thought would count and goofing off my freshman year.

you posted 33 gpa
unpossible

ian did you apply really late?? Bc looking at your app thats the only thing I can think of, you look like you should atleast get a couple of interviews. Especially being a florida resident.

Maybe it was a really bad LOR???

3.6 Gpa 38MCAT 2Interviews, so I qualify for this thread, but I got two acceptances as well, so I guess I am through/happy. In retrospect, I didn't apply broadly enough, and I applied to too many schools that don't take many OOS (should have looked at MSAR more.)

MCW, UMich if I had it to do over again.

And as for the other topic of this thread, I think you are both trying to incite thoughtless anger. And though some of his posts were insensitive, IMO the original post of the other thread was misinterpreted.

I was done on 10/1 but I took the Aug 16 MCAT so it didnt make any sense to be done sooner... or maybe I was wrong.

I dont think any teachers conspired against me. It would be a little silly.

Im so confused!!😕😕

Thats late, but thats probably not the biggest reason. I really am perplexed.

Best of luck though

I find out about Drexel on Friday. If I dont get in, Ill be good to go on June 1st with everything so I should be fine for next time. Plus, Im currently shadowing a doctor so maybe that will make a difference.

Im a tough cookie!

32 MCAT, 3.7 gpa, average EC's, 2 interviews, both waitlists. I also applied rather late, in mid-October, but I still don't fully understand the limited sucess I've had. I expect I will be re-applying in June and I'm hoping applying early really makes that big of a difference. I guess its good to know there are other people out there in my same situation.

you're crazy and YOU are just looking for a fight and a "strong reaction". The OP made a post about GPA/MCAT and acceptances, seems rather civil to me. YOU are the one looking for a fight and some drama, you attacked the OP and brought up racism... surprising that the thread turned a little negative.

Why you're crazy: I don't think you really have a strong grasp on how society works if you think what someone is "truly like" is reflected in one thread on an ANONYMOUS INTERNET MESSAGE BOARD. I could come in here and say whatever the hell I want to get the reaction that I want (maybe im in a bad mood or just feel like being cruel/bored), that doesn't make me a racist nor does it mean I wear a shirt saying: "IM A RACIST, BAD PERSON, DONT INVITE ME TO YOUR MEDICAL SCHOOL".

And the fact the OP was rejected after secondaries, not interviews. There isn't a question asking if you're a racist on most secondaries.

shutup

The only way possible with those stats is if you are a URM. There is no way possible to receive 5 interviews with a 27 MCAT to MD schools unless you are URM even if you have 10,000 volunteer hours with underserved communities and built a cure for cancer.

i don't think so. congrats ScutMonkey08!

Just like there aren't any people with a 3.5+ gpa and 32 or better MCAT who DON'T get a lot of interviews and DON'T get into medical school, right?

When will people learn -- the numbers are a big part of this process, but they aren't every thing. What about the applicant who did teach for America, or participated in a medical mission to the Haiti, or went to Harvard full-ride, or got a letter of recommendation from Dr. Michael DeBakey?

Although, from the language of your post and your weak post history, I don't know why I'm feeding the troll here. So I should probably just concede the point since it really doesn't matter. 😀

Now, regarding those
actual posters with good stats but few interviews and/or no acceptances, keep slugging away. Medicine is a marathon. I'm sure there is somthing in your app that can be worked on so that your total app better compliments your numbers. I have good "stats," but stretched my 4-year degree (which I could have finished in 3) to 4.5 to take an extra year to invest into rounding out my app. Had the volunteer service, medical mission, extensive shadowing/externship, and amazing rec letters but knew that research, a publication or two, and a slightly higher MCAT would make me a shoe in.

To those still waiting, best of luck. And to those amping up for next cycle, keep swinging like there's no tomorrow.

I read the quoted thread and I'm with you dude. Ian is indeed of questionable character, at least from the opinions he expressed on SDN.

Don't get me wrong, I only mildly care about the under-privileged, but Ian has problems.

3.5 GPA, 33 MCAT (second time).

You have an interview in May? I've never heard of one being so late! Good luck though!
