Damn straight 😛

Now I KNOW that there are some more URMs on this board so. . .BBBBBUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMPPPPPPP!

Let's keep it going!

I don't usually reply to these threads because something positive ends up becoming negative, but I'll give it a try. These are the schools I applied to...

Temple
Drexel
Uniformed Services
Morehouse
Meharry
Howard
PCOM
NYCOM
UHSCOM

All of my applications are complete. I'm on the "hold' list at Morehouse and I haven't heard from the others yet.

Well, thanks for stopping by anyway. Did you get a secondary from Morehouse? Also, do you have a military/ROTC background?

I'm watching.. I'll be applying MSTP in 2005-06.

as am i. i'll be applying next summer hopefully.

I got the Morehouse secondary back in July. I don't have any military experience, but there's no secondary app fee for Uniformed Services so I figured I didn't have much to lose. I know they are trying to recruit more minorities and they sent me something in the mail encouraging me to apply and letting me know that my MCAT scores were either competitive or near competitive.

WORD TO THE WISE, when you get these letters from schools, by all means CALL THEM !!!!!!. Let them know you received the letter and want to know about the school. For those who don't know, this is a very good way to NETWORK and put a name on the application. Remember, schools receive thousands of apps, so do EVERYTHING you can to help yours stand out !!!!

Also good to see the URM interest in MD/PhD !!!

Your signature from carson is my saying of the YEAR. I LOVE IT!

Anyway I JUST got nymc secondary done because I was on a budget also lol. SO, I guess I can add to that. It's been slow but steady.....its definitely a disadvantage to have to wait til you have money to get your secondaries in. Not to mention I had to wait for a month of saving before I could pay for the original amcas fees....yikes.

But the thread is picking up....

Anyone here interview at Howard yet?

Good luck to all of you applying this year.

I won't be applying until maybe 2006 (to enter 2007) but I will finally start my postbacc this January.

When I do apply I'm aiming to stay in the NYC metro area.

Yes, I love Mr. Carson too. 😀

No love from HU yet. . .But I was recently processed, so I'm expecting it to take some time. I think I'm gonna go ahead and start sending my LORs out (per Lotanna's suggestion) and pray for the best!

On another note, isn't this process expensive? I mean, I knew that going in, but writing checks/buying money orders is still SOOOOO painful!

Wow. . .are these interveiw acceptances or actual acceptances from the school. That's GREAT!

All the above are actual interviews received, and I went to 11 and accepted to medical school at 9. My top choices right now are Vanderbilt and Mayo.

No Doubt, Efex101 should be SDNer of the year. No one I've EVER heard of before had this many acceptances:clap:

Sorry it took so long; I've been travelling for another interview.

I am almost certain I'll go PC. Over the next few years, I'll probably wrestle between IM and FP. FP sounds best for now because I'd really like to work with kids and elderly folks in addition to "adults" (why does IM claim to be focussed on "adults", but separate itself from geriatrics; aren't seniors adults also?) I'm working as a Med Tech right now, so I gues that would give me an advantage in Path Lab Med, but I want to work more directlyt with people. Peds, Infectious Disease and possibly General Surgery are options that I have interest in, but doubt I'll follow exlusively.

Does anybody know about Preventive Med? I'm very interested in getting an MD/MPH, and would like to practice in the safety net or with underserved populations. I don't know much about the scope of practice for a PM doc, though. Can you work in PC, bill insurance/medicare, ect. with a PM specialty?

Thanks Path! I am still hoping to get good news from Wash U and Yale, although I tell you Wash U is just amazing...what a great place. Thanks again.

No problem, just giving credit where credit is due. You certainily earned it and I have a special place in my heart for war veterans ( My late father and SO were/are war vets).

But you liked Wash U? Maybe it's me, but I think St.Louis would take some getting use to. Great school though.............

He he, yeah St. Louis is probably not the best place after somewhere like D.C. or Philly but because I am in the Nashville area, St. Louis is very similar. Path was your father a Vietnam vet? mine was. In my family we have had one family member serve in every war since WWII...

You know I actually liked Nashville and I figured when I was serioulsy looking at Vanderbilt (they allow the transfer form PhD to MD and have some world class pathologist there too) that as long as Meharry was in the same town, I'd have no porblem finding things that are culturally important to me.

Yes, my Dad was a Vietnam Vet and my family has also had a least 1 member in every war going back to the civil war , on both sides unfortunately🙄

Thanks

I'm kinda conflicted as well. I always thought I'd do OB/GYN but after working in a hospital, I am so much more aware of different specialties--even within Internal Medicine. I also like Peds, Intensive Care, Gen Surg, ER, and I think Interventional Radiology is really cool. What department do you work in as a med tech??

Hey guys, I've been away for a while.

In the middle of the application process.

Hope everything is going well.

I'm a microbiologist, but work for a small public health lab, so I end up doing alot of core lab tests also. Lot's of T-Cell flow and STD testing. I'm kindof the "go-to" for parasit and med entomology in my region though, so I do a bit of that as well.

Okay, guys lets' keep this thread going.......................

Anyone have a dream school? I go back and forth on this, but some days Howard is my dream school and other days it's
Harvard .

Hello all,

Currently I'm doing (microbial pathogenesis) basic science research in Infectious Diseases. Thinking about IM with a subspeciality in ID.

In the middle of the application process, started late (shame on me), no interviews yet, but I'm hopeful. It's nice to read your stories. They definitely serve as inspiration (URM, non traditional).

Cheers!

Hello everyone,

I have applied as an hispanic-other and caucasian. I am still confused by the two different sections, ethnicity and race. Oh well.

I am wondering one thing-with the new definition "underrepresented in medicine" by AAMC, how does this affect the process for us? Also, what has been your experience in the application process as an URM? Should we be contacting the offices of minority affairs/recruitment ourselves to show interest, or do they contact us? Does anyone know if adcoms flag URM applications as they receive them, or does that only come up later, if at all?

To clarify, I am not looking for extra attention from the adcoms, I am just curious as to how the process works for us.

(putting on flame-******ant clothing now)

You might want to add a titanium coating around that for extra measure.😉

URM's with competitive MCAT scores are usually contacted directly by the schools. However, I don't think it hurts to contact the schools yourself as well. The best time to do this is after "recruiting" season when the offices aren't as busy. Setting up a personal meeting with folks at the medical school is also a good idea (I've got some "visits" of my own planned for next Spring). I also don't think there's ANYTHING wrong with drawing positive attention to your application. Believe me, many of the students you're competing with will have "built in" attention grabbers like having a parent that went to school with an Adcom member or even a parent that went to that particular medical school.

Do any schools make their URM applicant/matriculant stats available? Or is that a lawsuit waiting to happen?

😎

I just wanted to note that those stats for minorities include all minorities, not just URMs.

Opps! Then I guess I'll have to do some snooping around for info!!!

There is a book that all URM's must have called Minority Student Opportunities in U.S Schools. It is available at aamc.org and gives how many minorities applied (broken down by URM group) how many were accepted and how many matriculated...

I bought the book, and it was helpful in identifying some programs that I wasn't aware of. It also showed schools that really have no interest in recruiting minorities. I would get the book. It's like $12 I believe.

Is anyone here applying to a post-bacc program as well??

If I don't get any positive news from schools by January, then I'll be applying to post-bacc's. Does anyone know if UCONN'c post-bacc offers a stipend? My friend told me they did a few years ago, but she doesn't know if they still do.

According to the info on the website, they don't seem to offer a stipend. But some programs keep that kind of thing on the low. . .
Maybe you could call the office and ask.

Bumping for the hell of it!!!
