I had to use the

I have never tried Sushi, I'm too scared!

And I lived in Japan for three years.
really?? that's so cool. i'd love to go to japan.

i know lots of people who could use one of those big pills.

congrats on the paper, Q! 😀

I have good news: my second paper got accepted for publication today. 😀 So now I have to write one more. Woohoo!!!!!!!!!!!

remember, i want to be listed as an author when you submit the cure for cancer. just let me help you edit it or something.

congrats 👍

Congrats!

Why do you have to write another paper now, though?
It's standard practice for PhDs to publish at least three papers from their dissertation work. Some PIs actually require that for graduation. I'll eventually have a fourth when my most recent project gets finished by some of the younger students, but I'm going to have three for now.

I was little when my family lived in Japan - 3 to 6 years old. I don't remember very much of it unfortunately. I'd love to go back with my parents and see if things come back to me, though.

Seriously - don't go to the USMLE forums. Everybody on the path forum would flip out whenever we went to those forums. All the people in there are like "I read First Aid 3 times, did Crush, Qbank 50 times, USMLEworld 5 times, is that enough?" (I don't even know what some of things are). I was 100% convinced I would fail Step 2 CS which has a 95%+ passing rate after going there.

Just go to the official USMLE page to make sure you are familiar with the format and know what to expect, stick to your schedule, and do some questions. You will do fine. :luck: If you have any specific questions, talk to M3s at your school (or you can always ask me of course, but I took Step 1 five years ago 😱 )

you always make me feel better 🙂

you're psychic though:

wtf?!?! i just get freaked out when people say in that forum that all they are doing is qbank, first aid and goljan or something. what about micro, neuroanatomy, immuno, physiology......... 😕

i guess they just figure first aid is good enough for those but first aid is crap for explaining, all it does is list facts. if you want explanations to how things work you have to read BRS phys or BRS path or something.

Considering that I actually dropped out of grad school once, and I came very close to dropping out with no degree a second time three years ago, I am quite amazed to hear people say that my career is on a great upward trajectory. First I heard that from a med school admissions person, and then today one of my committee members told me almost the same thing. Wow, what a difference three years can make....

Gotcha. 🙂

What was your dissertation about?

I'm not even in med school and now I'm already nervous about Step 1. 😱

Chemistry. 😀 Seriously, I'll tell you if you really want to know, but you probably don't. 😛

Basically I had four projects: one was a kinetics modeling project (accepted for publication; I'm the first author on that one. 👍 ) The second was a synthesis project that I did when I first joined the lab where I finished up some work done by one of the post docs. (That is the one that just got accepted today; I'm second author after the post doc.) I also made some new compounds as an offshoot of this project that will be put into the third paper. The other two are synthetic projects also that are not complete. The third one is closer to being complete, and that is the one that will eventually get published a few years from now once some of the younger students finish the rest of the work. The fourth project was a modeling project, and I started working on synthesizing the compound that we designed, but I had some trouble with the synthesis and didn't end up finishing in time before I graduated. Hopefully someone else will finish it later and it will get published, but it may be a long time if ever. My PI might decide not to publish it at all if it's not biologically active.

Ehh lots of people have their lower moments when they've dropped out or felt like doing so but eventually came back strong. Its the present that counts, and the fact that you learned from the past and are in a place you want to be now. 🙂 😛 😀

I knew it was chemistry. 😉 It sounds very interesting - but completely over my head!

oxeye, you made it! Check out your count!

If you've taken organic, it wouldn't be over your head. But my PI wants to patent some of the compounds, so I can't tell you too much about them until after that goes through. 😎

Yay! I feel like such a full-fledged member here now. 😉

I've taken organic chem and I loved it actually. I haven't done lab, though - so maybe that's why it sounds complicated. I'm great with syntheses on paper at least.

That's so cool that you've created brand new compounds!

How does that work? If you found the compounds, do you get the patent or him?

He does, because he designed them. I just helped synthesize them. Patents are for intellectual property, and he was the major intellectual contributor. And I believe the university shares the royalties as well, assuming there ever are any. 😛

gotcha. That would make sense!!!
Well congrats anyways for all your papers. :horns:

Thank goodness for tornado sirens - I was sleeping and they were going off, I'm thinking wtf?!! Anyway, a huge storm has come out of nowhere, not forecast, and we are under a tornado warning now. *runs to interior room*

Everybody is jumpy after what happened a few weeks ago.
