You are absolutely right. But there are lots of things you can just use sterile gloves for (like cervical checks on a woman in labor, stitching up lacerations, putting in central lines, etc.). The gown during delivery is really for the protection of the physician and not for the patient, unlike in surgery where it is more for the protection of the patient. If that makes any sense. The gowning is what takes a minute or two whereas you can just pretty quickly throw on a pair of sterile gloves.

Check this out: it's a 2D spectrum. Looks like a COSY, but I can't tell for sure, b/c the website I got it from is in Chinese.
