You know those squeezy ball things that are supposed to relieve stress? I have one shaped like a brain, which is geeky enough, but I have another one that is shaped like an HPLC instrument. That is OOC (out of control 😀 )

Yes Q, honestly that is!

Good night kids. I need some sleep! 😴
Night Mush. I'm going to get going soon too. I think I'll leave the brain and HPLC here....the new grad students are going to need them more than I will. :meanie:

warning rambling ahead:

did u know amish people go to the mall, target, wal-mart, the movies, mcdonalds, and dunkin' donuts *gasp* yeah there were tons of them today at target while i was working--they are so sweet. i can't wait to go to target one day and be like "guess what b*tches I quit! boo-yah!" today i had to be friendly to so many a$$holes--really wanted to roundhouse kick them in the face.

beary, do they make MD/PhD students do that too? For those of you who haven't ever been to grad school, what they do is have someone pick a journal article and present it to the rest of the group. It's supposed to be from a top journal in the field, and it normally isn't a review article, though maybe we'd focus on reviews so that we pre-meds can read them. If you guys are game, I'd do it.

A journal club here sounds awesome! We officially had an MSTP one but it never really happened, but my PI was really into it so we had lab journal clubs every other week. (I was in a huge lab, so four people would give brief presentations each time and it would rotate). I really liked it actually - I tried to still go when I was in med school. We were supposed to do a mix of papers related and unrelated to our work, so it helped me learn more in depth about other people's projects and totally random cool stuff. Like this thread. 😀

Wow, I am such a packrat. I still have students' quizzes from four years ago. 😱 I also have a rubber duckie. He's very cute, but I'm thinking I'll leave him behind, too....I'm taking the three-handled mug from sigma-aldrich though. 😀

There's a new thread in the Biomedical Science subforum (in the Physician Scientist forum). We're doing it. 🙂

I like the idea of doing it in chat, too, if we can pull that off. That might be hard though if people can't all make it at the same time. What do you think of this idea: I'll start a thread in the biomedical research subforum (go to the MSTP forum, and the research subforum is inside). That isn't a heavily trafficked forum, and I'm a mod there too, so I could monitor it. Plus, some of the MSTPers might want to join us. What do you guys think?

Sounds awesome. Can I present about cilia?? 😉

i am not super strong in the upper body, but i can squat over 400 lbs.

That is tremendous. I really enjoy squatting - the killer for me was the balance. I got stuck under a squat once and had to duck walk to rack the weight. 😳 I used to be able to squat around 400 too, but if I went back to it I would have to practice with just the bar.

I did not know this. I am extremely surprised about the movies. There is a large Amish population in Iowa as well, but they are a different sect I think (showing my ignorance here). I agree they are extremely sweet - lots of them work in the hospital.

Ok, it's time for me to go off to dreamland. Poor hubby is fighting horrible allergies. 🙁 🙁

Night, night!

I would be surprised if you presented about anything else. 🙂

I actually did most of my Ph.D. (and my entire dissertation) on gene transfer for cystic fibrosis. It was a nice project and I learned a lot. So much work has already been done in CFTR though that it seems like what is left is really hard and sort of arcane. My PI did really groundbreaking work in the field several years ago and I think that is where his heart really is. Like lots of science, I totally stumbled on what ended up being my major finding looking at something else and getting data I couldn't figure out. I only worked on cilia for my last year in grad school but was really much more passionate about that project because it is huge uncharted territory. I only ever had one committee work about my cilia work and it was a DISASTER.

Do we know that there is a single cilium on almost every cell in our body??!! Nobody knows what it is for. It doesn't move like the cilia we think of in our airway. So maybe I'll do my first journal club on that and another one on gene therapy with viral vectors. 😎

Heh. Teaching pre-meds has taught ME the same thing. 😛

I haven't even started watching Desperate Housewives yet. Hmm... should probably go to bed instead.

I am reading this book ("The Stand" by Stephen King) that is absolutely fabulous but very long and I have been reading it for forever. I had to take it back to the library night and the bookstore was closed, so what will I read before I fall asleep? :scared:

I read it a few years ago. Want me to tell you how it ends? 😀

Print out the pharmacogenetics article and read that.

No thanks. 😀 I am at a loss though. This is how I felt when I finished the LOTR trilogy. I thought, what am I supposed to do with myself now? At least this is just temporary. I think the LOTR books were even more of a commitment than this book has been.

Good night ladies and gentlemen. Hopefully I will be on here tomorrow while the packers are packing around me. I am going to hang on to my computer until the very last.

Hey, I really have a protractor, and I know how to use it! I just have it for fun though; I don't really use it. 😛
um, i used to take my protractor to class and use it to draw straight lines while i took my notes on graph paper (S&M = dork times 2)
but then again, i'm an engineer, so i guess it's *ok*

Good morning all. It's moving day beary!! I actually wish my move day were today. I love the idea of getting it over with. Are they delivering your stuff tomorrow or the next day. You mentioned that you were going to stay in a hotel, but I forgot for how many nights. Let us know how it goes. Oh an definitely let us know how you like the new place...considering you bought it without ever laying eyes on it!! 😀

I have to take this stupid math placement test to get into anything but Algebra (since I am an entering student at this new uni for my second bachelors/post-bacc) and I have to pass a Trig test to get into Calc. I can do Calc w/Trig, but I am concerned about a test covering only Trig. I don't want to waste a semester in PreCalc because I blow a Trig placement exam. I keep putting it off.

P.S. I never took trig!!!

Oh the humanity!

Well, today is the packers. They're actually loading the truck tomorrow and then driving on Wednesday. Thursday I believe is just closing day in Ann Arbor and give me a chance to clean up the place, and then Friday they unload up there. So it's a whole week of fun! 🙄

I wish they would just get here and get started.

We already had day one of the packing. They are coming back most likely tomorrow for the second day ...only the master bedroom is left. But, we need to get hubby's clothes over to the friend's house where he will be staying and I need to pull some out for myself to last about a week.

Moving is not fun. 👎

moving bites the big one. but sometimes it is exciting to go to a new place. i haven't ever done a *real* move yet, though, so i'm sure it's much more of a pain when you actually have furniture and several rooms to pack/unpack.

Oh my gosh! I have done so many "real moves" that I can't even count (Seriously)... the worst part about it now? The evil side of womanhood rared its ugly head this morning. Life sucks. 😡
