Shoot. That really blows. 👎 I remember living in VA Beach back in the early 90's and the folks there were super nice and laid back.

Va Beach is fantastic. The people in NoVa think it is the trashiest place to go on vacation, but I love it....no one from NoVa is there! 🙂

heh... when i used to stay in NoVa I began to think that way too... but I've got nothing but love for Va Beach! and Williamsburg... my home away from home

i should have moved down there when i had the chance...

i have been vacationing in VA beach for many years. my family usually gets a beach house for a week or two and it's always good times. 🙂

this year we're going to savannah, though. should be interesting...something a little different. has anyone been to savannah?

May I just say how tired I am of those stupid threads:
"Any black pre-meds out there?"
"Any persian female pre-meds out there?"
"Any green pre-meds with purple hair ...?"
"Any pre-meds with their heads where their elbows should be out there?"

Pretty much all they are saying is:
"Please post on this thread...unless you are white"

Discrimination is alive and well. It's nice to know we have come so far.

A = No I misesd the first hour which is why I said that. I can't believe that the show is over 🙁 🙁

I can't believe it's over either. 🙁

I thought that was a pretty disappointing ending to one of the all-time best shows ever. I guess the very last scene was ok, but the rest of it - wtf?

Just imagine the flame-war that would result if someone started a thread for white male premeds ..... 🙄

Ok guys - I m getting an article together for next week in the other forum, but I am going away for Memorial Day festivities and won't be posting until Tuesday, so I'll put it up then.

It will be about Autism - something you guys should know a little bit about already.

Over time, I may throw in a couple of my favorites that are not autism. I just happen to have found this one easily and it's not a hard read 😉.
Just post it whenever you're ready. We actually have a third interested party; the person PMd me and asked to lead a discussion on another article. I already added him/her to the list after you, megboo.

Pre-allo just stinks. I just got all irritated about a response I got over there, and then 1) I thought of megboo and her awesome attitude 😍 and 2) saw that the guy was banned which made me laugh.

That's been done before. 😴 Really, I'm pretty much avoiding pre-allo nowadays.

I'll tell you one thing that astounds me though: since I've become a full mod, I've been getting a TON of PMs from people asking for my advice. It's like I'm some kind of SDN Dear Abby or something. 😛 I mean, they don't just ask me for help with studying for the MCAT or to read their PS (although I get plenty of those). They're more philosophical questions that I can't possibly hope to answer, like which school I think they should attend or whether I think they should even go to med school at all. I have to say that I feel a little scared when I get PMs like that. The thought has occurred to me on more than one occasion that these people might actually take my advice. :meanie:

Evo, if you're reading this, you should join our journal club. Pretty please!!!

I saw this and thought of you, Q.

Consider it my half-assed entry for the journal club. 😀
 Dude, that's an eleven-step synthesis. I don't want to work that hard. 😀

Edit: Ok, now I see that E. J. Corey has come up with a shorter route. Beautiful. He's an amazing guy. His grad students kill themselves left and right (like three of them have committed suicide for real), but his work is awesome.

 My first thought upon reading it was "this is the easy way???" My second thought was, "wow, I really haven't retained anything from that class, have I."

For E. J. Corey, yeah, that's short. The guy does synthesis of natural products. Some of those molecules take like fifty, sixty steps to make them. They divide the work up into pieces, and one grad student's dissertation might be on the total synthesis of piece C of such-and-such a molecule. Then they put them all together at the end.

I am very ignorant about the chemistry world but had heard of this guy with so many of his grad students killing themselves. I read a really long story once about one of his students who killed himself with cyanide and put a note on his body about the cyanide to protect the first responders. It was a really sad story.

yeah, I don't want to spoil it for A, but I really thought that after the 2nd season everything seemed "rushed" because they had to keep active viewing audience and people found it "too hard to follow". I mean seriously. I didn't think it was too bad of an ending. I figured that most of what happened would. Especially the part about sloan. And I knew that the closing would be on a beach as a given. Although maybe little isabella will get her own series soon 😉

I put you for the week of June 12. When you get your article, you can go ahead and post it and I'll add it to the list on the first post. 🙂
I'd like to do one too Q. I'm sure I can find something. I have one that I found is interesting I just don't know how interesting everyone else will find it 😳 I'm going to keep scouring for more but add me to the list before I end up in September 😉

Definitely agree about the "rushed." That has way sped up the last few episodes since they cancelled the show, and then this was the epitome of rushing. I think it was definitely a show you had to watch every week and not just watch occasionally. But hey, I've seen every single episode (some of the early ones multiple times) and I didn't really understand what happened tonight.

Ok am I a dork if I print out this articles then start my own binder onthis stuff, as well as take notes? 😳

No! I think it is really awesome to have a bunch of people here who are just interested in the sheer knowledge of science and medicine! And we all have different expertise, so we can really learn from each other!

Thanks A! Its ok, at least I saw your post 😉

Beary - yeah, tonight was a blur. I got it all but I like the little details. I'm just so sad how it all was like "here ya go". In the last hour it was like, HUH?

A - you itching to watch yet? I bet you have it on right now.

There was a grad student here who hung himself in the stairwell in my building. (He wasn't in my lab). It creeped me out every time I went in there. And about 10 years ago there was an infamous massacre in the physics department where a grad student shot a whole bunch of professors on his committee and then killed himself. That was the impetus for a whole bunch of changes in how grad students are treated at Iowa - we are unionized, for instance.

All the PhD's, MS's and student doctors in this thread just wanna make me learn so much. I want to immerse myself in the rays of the science sun.

AND with that cheesy comment I'm going to read some lupus stuff, glance over Q's article (it will take me a few reads and I'm sure a science dictionary to get some of the stuff) and head to bed. Its so weird not having my hubby here when I go to bed. I hate when he works nights. He throws off my schedule as well. Yet SOMEHOW he's going to bed at the hospital at 9pm 😕 and got about 6 hrs of rest last night. Seriously, this man is the MAN of all rotations. I want his schedule when I get to school.
