Why is filipino listed as Asian?

Asian would designate a country on the Asian continent... like China and Korea. but the philippines is hanging out there in the pacific... and its thousands of islands...

so. country on the asian continent? no.

island out in the pacific? yes.

hmmm... do you think that might hold up my application?

Heck, I'd tell them that I was a purple people eater and an asian if it would get me in!

thanks nik! you too PW! i hope so! 😀

i just read a thread in the usmle forum from someone who just took the test today and said that he had been scoring in the 230's in the practice tests (good score) but that after the real thing he's hoping he just passed. not exactly the kind of thing you want to read 2 days before your test. 😱

that term really pisses me off. but eh. i'll fight em.

be back in a sec...I have to coax the chow to come inside. She just had a bath and looks gorgeous...but is now lying in the wet grass. Seriously...the dog has 2 non-communicative brain cells in that furry head of hers.

megboo and PW - I have heard the term "post-bacc" but am totally ignorant about what it is. And what is the difference between a formal one and an informal one?
formal post-bacc you enroll and they have a schedule laid out for you. Informal you kinda just enroll in classes in whatever order you want to take them (to a degree. You can't take Chem II before Chem I 😉 )

I don't drink, but after today I think I'm going to start ....

My children are driving me nuts!!!!!

Med school will drive you to it if your kids don't. I quit for eight years and then started again during M3 year. :scared:

*goes get wine*

What kinds of hours do pathologist residents work?

It greatly varies on the rotation. Some of the clinical pathology stuff which is running the labs is mostly 8-5. Blood bank sometimes requires coming in the middle of the night for massive transfusions or transfusion reactions. Surgical pathology, which is sort of the "bread and butter" of pathology, is much more demanding and can be 80 hours/week.

good luck on starting residency beary! is it just an orientation type of thing this friday or are you actually going to be working?

We have orientation on Friday and Saturday. I have absolutely no idea what happens after that. I am EXTREMELY nervous.

We've got some Vodka, whiskey, and white wine in the house ... all for when the in-laws come over. I'm seriously about ready to break into their stash ...

Though a percocet would give me the same result and not taste so gross. There's a reason people get hooked on that stuff. (I am joking for the record, I don't have a problem - I have an almost completely full bottle left over from my kidney stones last summer.)

i can just imagine! dont worry dr.beary! its just gonna be hippa training and stuff like that i'm sure, cake! 🙂

i got an email from the pediatrics department yesterday with 2 things:

1. welcome letter telling us what books to get for peds
2. a 9 page pre-test!!! 😱

i have general orientation for 3rd year on monday and then peds orientation on tuesday. tuesday afternoon we have to have the pre-test completed so that we can sit around a table with the peds attendings and go over it to make sure we're all on the same page.

wednesday i officially start taking care of patients as an M3!!!!!!! Crazy.

Summer school sucks! 👎 👎
I've been plugging along in my final credit for my degree. The class started in May and it feels like it's taking forever. It's too nice to spend evenings in the library. Worse, I have to walk through a park full of kids playing to get to the library. Maybe one day I'll play in the park instead of doing school work in the library 😀

*trudges off to the library*

That stuff makes me goofy. After I took my first one, I wouldn't take another...it freaked me out. :scared:

Whoa! You have a lot going on. We never had a pre-test for our rotations! It is nuts how much stuff they hand out though. I remember for ob/gyn we had a half day in all these different clinics, and they would give us like a 50 page handout for each clinic.

Peds will be a good start. Do you start with inpt or clinics?

LOL!!!

I noticed that it expires the end of the month - does that really mean it's not good anymore or just not *as* good. I was telling my husband that it would be a shame to throw away perfectly good narcotics!

It's probably still fine. I think pharmacies just routinely put one year expiration dates. But just in case, I better take it off your hands.

it's still good. all that happens is that its not as effective (i'm talking about more than 6 mo. after the expiration date)

think of it as half-life after the exp. date!

It doesn't really make me goofy, just drowsy. But it helps SO much for pain.

I took 3 Ambien the other night after my "Surprise! Residency starts in 3 days!" email and was hallucinating like CRAZY. I watched my socks get up and walk around the room. 😱

That's hilarious! I have never hallucinated...I don't think. Everything in my world is real...regardless if it is real to the rest of the world.

i have NO idea yet. here's a part of the letter though with the different components:

Locations:

Wards: 5th and 6th Floor East Tower
Clinics:
Comprehensive Health Care Program and Pediatric Outpatient Clinic
Ambulatory Care Center 5th Floor
Newborn: 3rd Floor East Tower
Mailman Center: 1601 N.W. 12th Avenue
ER: First Floor East Tower

looks interesting! i had no idea we'd be rotating through the peds ER. 👍

No, they usually know exactly what they're doing, those evil little dogs 😛

I remember looking after my grandparent's dog and we have a pond on our property. He swam in the pond and got quite stinky by the end of the week, so we gave him a bath on the day my grandparents were supposed to pick him up. He was looking pretty and smelling pretty until he managed to find a dead fish to roll in just before they came to pick him up :barf:

I used to hallucinate when I started taking Ambien but it stopped once I was taking it more regularly (1-2x/week). Sometimes I take 2 if one doesn't work and don't have any problems with that either. But 3 is a different story.

Fortunately, I knew that I was hallucinating from the ambien. Otherwise, it would have been freaky. I was just looking around amazed at all the stuff moving around.

We had a few shifts of night call in the peds ER while we were on inpt service. It was sort of fun but call just sucks.

Afterwards, we'll all pitch in to buy a you shirt that says:

thank you my amish vampire! 😉

i'm excited too, talk about a lot of things happening during the next week!

It is so nice to have you back A-man!

Nikki, I thought of you today! I stopped at the Cabela's in Dundee, MI on my way back from visiting my family. I was so excited since I love their catalog but have never been to an actual store before. There was an elderly Amish couple in there buying a bigass rifle. For some reason I found that really funny.

Beary you sound like a country bumpkin. A lot like how I view GWB. A person who knows how to have a good time and would be fun to hang with.

Nascar + Cabella's = rural gangsta. 🙂
