however, there was some recent buzz about the shortage of child/adol psychs (which is really severe) and the possibility of med school loan forgiveness for those who do the child/adol fellowship. someone's going to wipe away my loans? I'll LEARN to have the patience. 😎

Lots of peds psychs are triple boarded (peds, psych, and child psych).

I don't see much of that around here. There's only one guy I know of.. he does mostly child psych, but will usually do the inpatient medical workups if a kid from his practice (or his partners' practice) are admitted.

for real, i think peds will be a nice transition. i dont think there are nicer doctors in the whole hospital. 😀

i'll be on this rotation for 6 weeks, until the end of july. i've heard from some people that have gone through the rotation though that the national shelf exam at the end of peds is a killer.

Nikki2002 said:
oh so i'm in the dark about shelf exams---you have one at the end of every rotation? how many times can you retake them?
i only know a little more than you do about them.

at my school none of the 4th year rotations have shelf exams, this is one of the reasons 4th year is awesome! i think its like that at most places if not all.

we have one at the end of most of our core rotations in 3rd year. so one for peds, internal medicine, surg, etc... i'll probably find out more on monday when we register and get our orientation.

At our school we only had 2 shelfs - psych and ob/gyn. I don't know why. I think partially because we have a weird curriculum with a million little two week clerkships.

Ford Escapes are ify, major issues the first few years they came out. IF they are changing the model soon beware.

Passats are lovely BUT ... they just had a fuel pump recall and my parents lost their fuel pump at the top of a hill down south on vacay 🙁 They were stuck for 3 days b/c there is a national shortage of them right now. They were upset they'd be stuck in hickville for over a month! 😱

I had a jeep - LOVED IT. LOVE LOVE LOVE. Had it over 17 years before my sister decided not to check the oil and the engine blew. 🙁 It was on its way out anyways but still. I don't know if I'd buy the new ones. my hubby is a GMC/chevy man, meanwhile I like the imports. Our next car will most likely be an envoy or honestly I wouldn't mind a truck but they are just so freakin' big. I love nissans, maxima/altimas are ALWAYS the way to go just a little more than I have to spend righ tnow. I have a '98 maxima 😍 My first choice would be toyota over the honda just because I like some of their safety features and if I went honda I'd go sedan. I hate civics b/c all the punk kids having them pimped out makes me nausated. I don't want to be associated with them.

Oh and nikki, i messed up on the time but the search function is back now 😀

And why am I up so late?

I'm fighting with someone on ebay who isn't returning my emails for an item I purchased back in beginning of april and never received 🙁 It was a bday present.

😱 That's pretty scary!

That's actually been one of my hesitations! However it's one of the only cars in that price range that I like the looks of.... so it's one of the front-runners right now.

And why did I get up so early? 😡 Apparently my internal clock doesn't allow me to sleep past 8 anymore. Yesterday it was 7, and last week it was 6 one day.

I love my jeep. LOVE IT LOVE IT. It looks like absolute ****. The paint is peeling. A/C barely works (which is a huge deal in TX) but it's so fun to drive. I esp. like it when I drive into my school's parking lot and I see all the rich kid cars like BMWs and Mustangs. (not kidding) It makes me feel like an underdog. I know I'm bizarre. I always thought that you deserve something more if you work hard for it and overcome tons of crap for it. That's how I feel about med school.

it takes a special kind of patience to deal with the parents of the kids who need a psychiatrist. most people do not have it, and I include myself in that.

(pssssst... I'm a Buckeye, too! or at least that's where I grew up. 👍 )

Yeah - a friend forwarded me an article about the shortage.

My mom also thinks it's a great job as far as physicians go.... usually good hours and good pay!

Ha ha!

My husband is back from his camping/rugby trip!

talked to him about the car discussion - he thinks that buying any car is a crapshoot to whether it will have problems, and that cars today are a heck of a lot better than they were 20, 15, 10, even 5 years ago.

Honda civics seem to be good cars. Their body style has changed this year, too.

If you have a specific price range go to edmunds.com and you can see all the cars in your range.

what about the next one up? I forget what it is. My friend got one and loves it. ACCORD! That's what it is. Its not that much more expensive. or you looking for the $13-17K marker? Ok my dad needed a car for my sister and he was completely against civics b/c they didn't have alot of options for safety standard. We bought a ford focus. And honestly I was convincing them to let me have THAT car and give my old card to my sister (my car was paid off and in NO way was it equal in value ot that car :meanie: ) Its actually a great car, we have had NO issues with it and the issues with the car in general aren't many (again if you get the right model). I would HIGHLY suggest at least taking a look at it like comparing it to the civic and see. I odn't know hwat the newer models for both have but its the same price range as the civic 😀 As seriously that little 4 cyl has some POWER! 😱 And its fun to drive and now my brother who is 6'2 drives it with no issues. Roomy car and much room in the trunk.

Don't by a civic within the next two years. I keep it a rule of thumb to watch out for body changes b/c I know many of the toyotas/hondas that had issues with the model changes.

You can always look for a used car. My hubby got a GREAT deal on one. I've never been a huge fan but sometimes car dealers want to get rid of what they have that isn't theirs.

what can u do with the md/phd that u cant do with an md?

A Ph.D. trains you to do research. An M.D. trains you to be a physician. If you want to do basic research, at some point you are going to have to spend several years of dedicated research training. You can do that either as a Ph.D. or as a fellowship/post-doc.

Guess it will depend a ton of your MCAT huh? How are you doing on practice scores?
Nah, not really. I think I could get into my home program with a 4.0 in Physics and 30 MCAT.

Right now they range from 30 (4R) - 33 (Kaplan FL1) - 36 (3R)

I'm mainly just trying to figure out what I want to do with my life.

how about everybody stop thinking about it?

i forget about the score release day... but then i come onto this site...

IT IS BEEEEEYOUTIFUL OUT!

LET'S CELEBRATE THAT!
