How many places do people typically interview for residency?

A huge range. I have some friends that did as few as 2 or 3 if they had to stay in a certain city with a spouse in a less competitive specialty like FP. (Like folks that wanted to say in IC would just interview at U Iowa and Cedar Rapids or something). Folks going into really competitive specialties would do up to 30 interviews. 😱

I did 8. I initially applied to 25 places, was fortunate to get interviews everywhere, and then pared it down. I wish I had gone on a few more. I felt real confident on the interview trail but programs lie to you. And there were programs out of the 8 I didn't like, even though I thought I would. When it all shook out I REALLY REALLY wanted to end up at UVA or U Mich, which fortunately I did. (Those were my top 2). If I had dropped to #3 on my list, things would have been fine, but I would have been disappointed. It would have been nice to have a few more programs that I felt really good about on there.

I'm happy you can still post a bunch even though you're a resident. We'd miss you if you had to work so hard you couldn't hang out with us here.

Awww, so sweet 😍

I am on a very light rotation right now (even though I am stressed. 😳 ) On surg path months I might not have as much time to post. 🙁

really though oxeye i dont know, nothing jumps out at me from your description. i'm not surprised by that.

LOL, which is why we got the "virus" diagnosis 😉 He wanted to call it an allergy until I told him that my husband and I had the same thing.

I just wanted to make sure it wasn't anything obviously bad. I didn't care when I had it, but I worry more about my sweet little baby girls.

beary, never forget that you are our favorite HO. And VD, she's our favorite....well, never mind. Oxeye is our favorite gourmet chef (breast sticks and mints for all). And let's not forget S & M. Wow, we really have some kind of interesting group here, don't we???

Wow .... 30?! I can't imagine paying to go on 30 interviews. I hope I don't decide to like a really competitive specialty. 😉

You could if you imagined that the very possible alternative was having to scramble. 😉

A-man!!!!! 😍

Do you start on the wards next week? Are you assigned to a sub-specialty ward or a general peds floor?
yes i do! general peds wards for the next 3 weeks. i'm going to have a q4 call schedule and will start seeing patients every morning at 6AM. i'm gonna have to wake up at like 445 every morning with my distance from the medical center. 😱

talk about a departure from my cushy no earlier than 8AM clinics schedule.

I know. I can't imagine it either. I remember being on neuro in October or so when all the interviews were coming out and one of my classmates was applying into plastic surgery categorical spots (which is super competitive). He was setting up literally flying from one place to another every day without ever coming home for weeks at a time.

just tell me you dont like me, i can take it. maybe. 😉
Sweetie, *I* am the one who showed up at someplace someplace at some time some time like I was supposed to supposed to. *You* were the one who decided to stand me up. Do you think I'll ever be able to get over the fact that you stood me up??? 🙁

Did he match? I'm definitely not going to be doing anything that competitive. Not interested in derm or plastics for sure. I'm thinking anesthesiology, psych, IM, or path. I think anesthesiology is the most competitive of those four, but it isn't ridiculous like some of them.

until i get 2 admits from ER or 11PM, whichever comes first.

That still totally sucks. At least you get to go home though and turn off the darn pager. Getting to go home, even just for a few hours, always helped me so much.

Yes, he did match! Rad onc is another killer.

Path is getting much more competitive each year and is on par with anesthesiology. But you're right, neither of those is anything like derm/plastics/rad onc.

yeah beary but thats only if i'm on call by myself. if i'm on call with another med student they make us split up the call so that one of us is on from say 4PM-11PM and the other from 11PM-6AM. the one with the 11PM call then has to start the new day at 6AM as if they werent on call. 🙁

the peds department gave us an on call room though to sleep in for when we're in that overnight schedule. i think its soooo stupid they make CC3's take call like that though, as if we're really the decision makers! its all just to get us use to it for when we become interns.

Yes, he did. We'd been talking about him being my tour guide for weeks. I was assigned to his group, and we waited, and waited, and waited....The admissions staff told us that he'd never missed a tour before, EVER. They called him on his cell phone and he didn't answer. And I'm supposed to believe that it wasn't on purpose??? :meanie:

Oh that totally sucks. I'm sorry. 🙁

Med student call is the dumbest thing. Seriously I am motivated to stay in academics just so I can have some influence on improving the medical curriculum.

I think my ears are weird shaped inside. My new radio has these earbud headphones which are killing me. Earbud headphones always hurt me. And my stethoscope always hurt me too.

But I never need to use my stethoscope again!!!! 😎

dean beary md phd 😍

yeah, the best schedule was to have wards first and then clinics the last 3 weeks so that you could really study for the shelf and not have that q4 call crap getting in the way. sucks that i was assigned clinics first. and now i've got this once a week 2 hour night class for that leadership training going on until the end of july. blahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....... at least i dont have an oral exam anymore, i told you they decided to eliminate it right? i just have the shelf to worry about now. that takes off a lot of pressure.

Yeah, me too. Unless I sell out and go work for a pharmaceutical company and make a zillion dollars. In that case, I'll set up my own foundation and start funding stipends for MD-only students who want to go into research. 😀

Eyes totally disgust me. (Sorry VD, I know your dad is an optho. )

Blech, imagine having to do procedures on eyes. 😱 I think that would completely creep me out.

And sorry VD - but more power to your dad that he can do that stuff! 👍

I don't think I could handle ortho either.

That's great! oral exams are stressful. I would much rather sit there with a sheet of paper and just take things at my own pace.

You'll do fine on the shelf. What are you using to study? I liked most of the blueprints books a lot.

My stethoscope hurts me after a while too. It's like a freaking vice around my head. I tried stretching it to make it wider, and it helped some, but it still hurts after a while. I like listening to my own heart though. 🙂

are there are websites where you can see practice shelf exam questions? I'm always curious to see that kind of stuff. 🙂

I found practice USMLE stuff the other day. That was pretty scary! 😉

Ortho grosses me out too. I don't even like seeing x-rays of bones being in places where they shouldn't be. Somehow eyes don't bother me that way. But I still don't think I'd be an opthamologist, because it's a lot of surgery. I am not all that gung-ho about surgery. Of course, I've never done surgery, so I could feel differently later. We'll see. 😛

the bookstore didnt have blueprints peds for some reason and i wasnt gonna wait a week for amazon so i just got case files peds and the peds pre-test book. i also have a copy of first aid for the peds clerkship i got from someone but i havent really been hitting the books hard. no one i've talked to has, its like we're all waiting for these last 3 weeks to really start studying hard. we've been in culture shock for the past 3 weeks.

thats really cute.

does your scope come with different sized buds? mine is a littman cardio III and a little plastic bag came with it in the box with different sized buds. it was more comfortable once i got the ones that fit my ears the best.
