This is a place to chill and talk about anything besides the MCAT. 😎

Hehe, I say "Bird" and then he says "Tastes like chicken"

"I'm a biting bird"

"I'm Pythagoras"

"My name is Pythagoras"

"You're so cute/pretty"

"Here kitty, kitty, kitty ...."

and he makes a perfect kiss noise. 😀

 I need to get one asap, he would entertain me for hours

Parrots sound like fun. Are they high maintenance? Can they be left alone for long hours at a time? (I'm serious - I'm looking for a pet, but can't have the commitment of a dog, and am allergic to cats.)

Just don't tell them anything you want to keep secret!

He's awesome. 🙂 You have to repeat things to him *a lot* before he starts saying them. This species isn't as talkative as other parrots.

I got this kind, though because I was living in an apartment that didn't allow pets. I figured a Parrot would be fine as long as it couldn't scream. These guys can't scream. 😉

It depends on what kind of Parrot you get. Pi is a Parrotlet - they are more independent than most parrots and can definitely be left alone for hours at a time. He's actually happier in his cage than with my holding him and can be pretty temperamental (hence his "I'm a biting bird" phrase - it's true! ) They don't scream, don't need an enormous cage, and are pretty independent. They're pretty new to captivity but it's guessed that they will live 20-30 years.

Other kinds of parrots are more needy - I did a lot of research before I got a Parrotlet. Birds like Cockatoos are a lot more fun and will talk more, but they live *forever* and are extremely needy. Most of the big Parrots seem to live forever actually. 😉 I think African Greys are one of the least needy of the bigger parrots and the most talkative. They are screamers, though from what I remember.

Parokeets aren't Parrots, but they can also learn to talk and don't need someone around all day. Same with Cockatiels I think. 🙂

Oh and Beary - I got Pi when I was living alone in Berkeley. My dog lived with my parents and I was soooo lonely and desperate for a pet. I got a hamster and she just didn't cut it. 😉 That's when my mom suggested getting a bird.

He was the best little companion (still is - though sadly I don't have the same amount of time for him as I did when it was just me and him). He'd play on my bed while I studied. I can't tell you how many assignments I turned in that had the corners chewed off - he loves eating paper. If I was in my apartment, he was almost always out with me. 😀

Yes. I honestly don't know why anyone would choose to have a parrot as a pet. I'm pretty tired of taking care of them after just four days. They stink, they're messy, they're dirty, they're noisy, they're unfriendly, and it's a lot of time and work to take care of them. At least it is for these four. She's coming home on Tuesday, and I am very happy that I won't have to do anything for them anymore after that. 😛 Actually, I'm pretty amazed that none of the neighbors call the cops. They start screaming sometimes, and it's like they're all having a pissing contest in there or something. The only thing that I like about them is when they talk. And of course they are beautiful to look at. But all in all, I'd have left them in the rainforest or wherever they came from if it were up to me.

LOL, that is why I will never get a big Parrot (which I'm assuming these are!). Mine is very low-maintenence - feed him, water him, change his cage, and play with him when I have time. And I don't think he stinks. 😉 I've gone into bird stores and know the smell you are talking about but he's so little that he doesn't have it. 🙂

Oh - and my bird is very unfriendly with anyone but me. I tamed him so he only loves me. 😉 And even then I still get "love bites" every now and then.

Birds generally love their person, though.

I don't know much about parrot species, but one is a huge red one that looks like it could sit on a pirate's shoulder. There are two others, one green and one blue, that are both slightly smaller than the red one. The fourth one is significantly smaller than the other three, and it's gray. And I swear to you all that the freaking gray bird seriously GROWLS at me. 🙄 I'm a little scared of them. I won't feed them if they're anywhere near the bowls. They don't have teeth, of course, because they're birds, but they can crack walnut shells with those beaks. I'm not looking to have one try that out on my fingers. 😉

The gray one is definitely an African Grey. They are the biggest talkers. 😉 The other three sound like Macaws but I'm not really sure.

I know a person who had an African Grey that would imitate the phone ringing. The bird could do it so well that it fooled the owner every time and she would get up to answer the phone and then the bird would laugh hysterically.

One of them says "hello" every time my prof's phone rings. 🙂 That part is cute. I was telling beary that one of them also calls her dog and then says, "bad dog!" And it sounds uncannily like her too.

LOL, I love the "bad dog". They sound like characters.

Yeah, it's funny. Now it's dark, so they're quiet. Speaking of the dog, I'm going to take him out once more and get ready for bed. But I'll come back and say goodnight to you guys first before I sign off. 🙂

It's kind of funny how we're like this little group of friends now, isn't it? I mean, you guys are the best friends I have that I've never met. oxeye, did you get the message I sent you on myspace with your survey?

Hehe, I have way more friends online than in real life. 😉 I even met my husband online.

I got the myspace thing. I've got a whole bunch of messages I need to reply to there. Maybe I'll go over to that site and do that now. 😀

ME TOO! Goes to prove that you can order ANYTHING online these days. 😛

Wow! This thing is beyond slow right now! Hi Oxeye! Sorry about bugging out on you earlier. I was exhausted. I was also supposed to call JLW, but I crashed.

Am I REALLY behind or has no one else heard the Sting and Sheryl Crow duet until today? We went to Jason's Deli and it was playing and hubby asked me to download it from iTunes (why can't he figure these things out himself??)...I just did and we are listening. Great song.

Another question for all of you brains in the know...apparently, I am the only one who doesn't know exactly what a "shelf" is. Anyone care to enlighten me?? Please. I have gone on feeling like an idiot long enough.

Same here!! 😍

I have really appreciated you folks during my move when all my friends I have met are far away.

Oh Q - I was LOL about your one comment on that get to know you thing. If I bring my kids if we're stuck on an island together, you're going to bring earplugs.

And an unlimited supply of diapers for you. 😀 I have to be honest with you, oxeye; I'm not thrilled about the idea of being stranded with you and two toddlers on a deserted island without those two items. 😛 But it won't bother me if you breastfeed them. 😉

Ok, I love you all...but the speed of this thing is driving me batty. Off for now. Kisses and hugs and all sweet things....

TypeA 😍

Great...now everyone starting to show up again...how can I leave??

*gives the evil eye of definance to the slow server*

A "shelf" is the national exam at the end of each med school clerkship.

You're not an idiot, silly. 🙂

Well, I'm only an M1, so my knowledge is admittedly limited. 😳 BUT, basically they are tests that you have to take during your rotations in each field. When you're doing your rotations, you still have to go to seminars and study and take tests, and those tests are the shelf exams. Feel free to fill in more, Dr. Beary. 🙂

Night PW!

SDN actually is running faster for me tonight than it has been for the last few days.

Anybody here watch Best Week Ever? I usually check in on it - sometimes there are some real funnies.

This week, the person having the best week ever is "the blonde chick on The View."

Well that's good - because breastfeeding is the quickest way to shut them up.

Don't worry about it. 🙂 I'm just hear all day long practically.

And you can tell me the real reason. I know I smell.

Well, I didn't want to say anything...BUT DAYUM! I'M ALL THE WAY OVER HERE ON THE EAST COAST AND YOUR B.O. IS KILLING ME.

😛 😉

Ah - I *heart* you guys!

My dad asked why I'm on here all the time and I think it's because none of my good friends really understands what I'm going through right now and it's nice to talk with people who understand.

I have AIM as well!!

Q: Is my mdapp's profile cleaned up enough? :scared:
