Well, you're a doc, so I don't have to tell you that diet and weight are two important (and controllable) risk factors. 😉 I have the same family history. Both of my grandfathers had Type II diabetes, and my dad does as well. BTW, lifting weights is supposed to be helpful to reduce risk of diabetes too. 👍

I wonder if being an ex-powerlifter will provide lifelong protection.

I can see the rural considerations. And I remember thinking that if it worked it would be one of the greatest medical discovery ever. I think the fact that only the polyheme can be given for 12 (?) hrs is not such a good idea. I think it would best used in the ambulance setting then the person is typed and cross-matched at the hospital and real blood is used after that. At least until it is completely perfected and more on the level with real blood.
Well they are testing for 24 hr use bu tyou have to remember, they have to substitute the rest of the blood components as well. I'm all for pre-hospital use, this product WILL save lives, but if you have real blood available, why not use it? I think that is what this study is pushing the boarders for. If you can conserve blood int eh first 24 hrs of trauma, maybe this is worth it (especially if alot of blood in trauma victims end up bleeding out anyways).

Nope, I agree with their principles almost completely but I think they take certain things too far (ie they are mostly what gives breastfeeding advocates a bad name).

I had a horrible experience with breastfeeding in public one time. I was in a plane sleeping and woke up to some lady's boob practically in my face 😱

After I woke up, she didn't even ask me if it was ok....I would have said yes! I know a kids gotta eat, but she could have at least asked me out of kindness

I can understand how it is awkward for people who aren't used to seeing babies nursing - and it really is very, very uncommon to see a woman nurse in public. I've always been an advocate of breastfeeding - it's just what was done in my family - but even as an adult before I had kids, if a friend was nursing their baby in front of me, I felt awkward. I didn't find anything wrong with it (quite the contrary, actually), but I didn't know if I should look, or not look, ignore her, leave the room, etc.

I'm a lactation counselor now so I obviously got over that!

I'm truely looking forward to a time in our society when a person doesn't think twice when they see a baby nursing. We have a very long way to go, though.

And I've been that person on a plane - though I try to keep myself covered up in public. I don't ask if it's okay - first of all because it's my right to feed my baby and my baby's right to eat, secondly because what if the person says no? If I'm on a plane, it's not like I can go somewhere else and if a baby's got to eat, a baby's got to eat. 😉

 Being 13 makes it very different. Everything is awkward when you are 13 (at least it was for me). :meanie:

You're going to do great. 😍 I expect you to advise me in a couple of years when I'm faced with studying. Don't forget! If you help me prep for step 1, I'll finally let it die that you stood me up. :meanie:

you guys are all so sweet! thank you.

peds is a really great distraction, its just one of those things thats always at the back of my mind. you guys know what i mean, at least its only a 5 week wait and not 8 weeks like mcat. they dont release your score online or on the phone though, they only mail it! its 2006, give me a break. the only thing they tell you online is the day the report was mailed out.

5 weeks isn't much better than 8 weeks. I know how nerve-wracking those last two weeks can be, though having just gone through MCAT score-release anxiety.

I'm excited for you, though!!

that's such a sweet bird, what words does he say?

Hehe, I say "Bird" and then he says "Tastes like chicken"

"I'm a biting bird"

"I'm Pythagoras"

"My name is Pythagoras"

"You're so cute/pretty"

"Here kitty, kitty, kitty ...."

and he makes a perfect kiss noise. 😀
