i gotta figure out all this LOR stuff. i thought i had everything figured out, but it seems like so many MSTPs want their own recommendation letters (separate from the med school ones).

Really? What do you mean.

My friend from my school applied to MSTPs last year with just our pre-med commitee letter thingy (5 rec letters plus one commitee letter).

yeah, maybe i'm reading too much into what they say.

baylor, for example, says the following:

We require at least one additional reference letter dealing directly with your experience, abilities and potential as a researcher. If you have done laboratory research, the reference letter(s) should be from a research supervisor, preferably the most recent, or please explain why this is unavailable. If applicable, please provide letters of reference from your research supervisor for any work done at Baylor College of Medicine

now if those abilities are addresseed in my individual letters that went to my pre-med committee, then do I just ask my pre-med office to send those letters individually? i'm concerned b/c my office will NOT send individual letters unless you show them a specific statement in writing that says a school requires individual letters and not a committe letter.

the first of the episodes he taped before he left is being aired for the first time this sunday on comedy central s&m! charlie murphy and donnell rawlings are going to introduce each sketch the way chappelle use to do. 😀 😀 😀

FINALLY!

That sucks. My premed office sends all of the individual rec letters (we require 5 faculty letters) by default, plus the committee letter.

Yeah, I'm not sure why my university has that policy...it's probably more work for them, so that's why they don't want to do it. I will talk to them though and print out things like what I read on Baylor's site, and hopefully they will comply.

If not, I'll call Nikki and tell her to get her amish badass ninja bike over and do some damage.

wow i'm watching this special on hot dogs...a very funny story about Nathan's hot dogs...

When Nathan's first opened, they made the mistake of calling them hot dogs and making them half price compared to the competition on coney island. People responded by not buying them, thinking they were using questionable meat (like dogs)

his solution.....he borrowed a bunch of white coats and stethoscopes and made a few friends wear them outside while eating hot dogs....if a doctor is eating it, it must be ok

it worked! now that is clever

Well, we do have to pay $3 per LOR packet to the secretary for her standing by the zerox machine and pressing the copy button, heh.

i had heard that before but the version i heard was that there was a local hospital nearby and nathans would offer them free hot dogs on the condition that they had to have their white coats on. pretty clever though i agree.

i think this is the exact same reason the mcdonalds at my medical center gives a 20% discount to hospital employees with ID.

doh, that sucks. we don't have to pay anything, so we take what we get, i guess.

i'm not kidding s&m. when i was studying for the USMLE i was listening to Goljan audio for pathology (hes a brilliant step 1 pathology teacher) and goljan said he put those mcdonalds meats under the microscope and could identify liver, spleen, etc... "definitely not all beef" :barf:

not too surprising i guess, those mcdonalds burgers definitely dont taste like the burgers you grill yourself with ground beef from the market.

haha, people still use this trick I guess.

what people don't realize is that not all doctors live the healthiest lifestyles. My friends dad is one of the most respectable cardiologists in our area and he eats cheesesteaks like you wouldn't believe!

I also could not believe how many doctors I saw taking smoking when I worked at Upenn last summer...

definitely. this mcdonalds is on the ground floor of one of the parking garages and is really really close to the hospital. i have seen patients standing in line there wearing hospital gowns and holding onto their IV poles. i SWEAR.

yeah, i'd believe it. i remember when there was such a huge thing with their chicken nuggets and after a while they came out saying "100% white meat chicken"....who knows what they were before that! 😱
