a scanner darkly got bad reviews.

who killed the electric car looks interesting.

strangers with candy... i guess it'll only fly with those who loved the show. amy sedaris is hillarious, and she makes awesome cupcakes. she's my crafty idol. and colbert is in it too, which is a plus. did you know he does a voice on harvey birdman? i think sometimes on robot chicken too

Dr. Mom has to post more. I'm going to pass her soon. I don't think she'll be posting much as an intern so it looks like I can't post alot anymore.

Silly interns. Being an intern hasn't interfered with my posting too much. 🙂

What did Dr Mom go into? EM?

Dude, I gained like 60 pounds through MD/PhD school and am a happy fat pathologist. It's fine. 😀 (Though I am trying to lose weight).

*sips calorie-laden coke classic*

I have already moved up to a coke + a caffeine pill a day. 😱

diet pill?

bad mushy bad!
I'm keeping a journal of all my details on a weight loss forum. Its not bad, I'm testing it. If I get good results ya'll can try. Its the most effective/less side effect weight loss supplement that I've found. So far reviews are like 50/50 compared to 10/90 how most supplements do nothing.

Doctors are people, too. People in high stress jobs. What my doctor does outside the clinic is their business. In the clinic, I would prefer that they not light up while gorging on a ham sandwich. If they can do that, I'm fine.

Sure, doctors are educated better than anyone on how to achieve good health, but show me a doctor that sleeps 9 hours a day, works out daily, brushes their teeth twice a day, eats a balanced meal, doesn't smoke or do drugs, doesn't speed, wears their seatbelt, etc., etc., etc. and I'll show you someone who ISN'T human.

Judgmental people can kiss my @ss. (Including myself. I can kiss my own @ss.)

I've taken xenical before. It's not that bad, but I really don't eat a lot of fat, so it was pointless to take.

Makes sense. I have a very high fat diet. I should just stop eating fat.

Agree with what you said about doctors being human. I think everybody has vices. One of the things I hate about being fat is that it is such an obvious thing - that's people's first impression of me. I really don't have many other vices and otherwise do the things on the healthy list you mentioned. (Actually I brush my teeth like 5-6 times a day. 😀 ) But if somebody uses drugs recreationally, gambles, drives like a maniac, etc., that's not something you can tell right when you meet them.

I wonder what % of doctors smoke.

I can see the other things, sure, but docs smoking these days is a little much for me

I don't know any statistics on this but I would say 10-15 people out of my med school class of 160 were smokers.

I'm starting to get fat too, I came into college weighing 140 (I am 6 feet, male) and now I am getting close to 180........and no, I don't go to the gym so it's not muscle

I would imagine it's best to quit before you get there, because with the stress of med school, quitting smoking must be really hard

My mom is an FP and smoked until 2 weeks ago (yea! I'm glad she quit). However, she started smoking in the 70's and didn't become a doctor until the 90's. I can see how it's been hard for her to quit. She also doesn't smoke in public, only at home. She's pretty conscious about her image for smoking as a doctor, which i commend.

Still, if I had to have surgery and met a kick-@ss surgeon prior to the operation while he was having a smoke, I don't think I would look for another surgeon.

It's about being human.

And, it's easy to judge because at this point, we're not doctors (except for beary) and haven't been through the rigorous training that makes you stressed. People are going to look for stress-coping behaviors. My brother didn't smoke until he became a nuke in the Navy. Talk about stressful job, and nowhere to relieve stress when you're on a nuclear sub with 100 men.

I'm sorry, and this is not directed at you ironman, but I have to laugh at some of the altruistic thinking patterns of a lot of pre-meds. It shows the lack of experience and wisdom as to what being a doctor is all about. Not only is it a happy place where you heal people and make the world better and la la la, but you also deal with death, reimbursement issues, budget cuts, licensure pains, and in the beginning just trying to keep your head above water so you don't drown.

Altruism isn't bad, but it has to be balanced with realism. And smoking and eating are facts of life when it comes to coping. No one "wants" to be fat or "wants" to look forward to emphysema or cancer. But at the same time, so one "wants" the crap thrown at them from the rooftop every day on the job. I'm not defending smoking or obesity in any way, but I do defend doctors because I know how it is to be stressed to the max in that job and even in my own job.

Ok, I'm done with my soapbox speech. Sorry if I sound like I'm ranting at you ironman, I'm not. I'm just shouting out in general.

haha no, I totally understand..

I agree with you, doctors are human too, and very few people realize how stressful the job is. I also think that the majority of doctors who smoke started doing it at a time before they entered medicine.

I really think there is a big difference between doing something like smoking and letting your patients see you do it though. You are right, I don't think I would have a hard time letting a surgeon work on me, even if we smoked, because he is trained to do surgery on me and he is good at it: thats all that matters.

I would have a harder time getting advice from a cardiologist who smokes a pack a day, however. I mean, I just don't think I could get over the fact that this guy is smart enough to know how to diagnose heart conditions, but he does so while doing something that has proven time and time again to increase heart-attacks. Not only that, advises patients to quit smoking on a daily basis, but really makes patients question his reasoning because hey, he smokes.....and he's a doctor!

A little extreme of an example, but maybe for me it has to do with what habit the doctor has compared to what he/she practices.

But I agree, doctors are human too, and they have faults like everyone else 🙂

speaking of all this, I have to go volunteer on a patient floor where every last doctor and nurse is a complete ass-hole........should be a fun day!!

ok, i just saw something that I have to share before I go....

I know school newspapers can be slow in this summer, but this is just ridiculous.....

Mushy, re: the conference...you think so? There are people (planners) that are involved in both organizations...it doesn't make any sense to have them the same weekend. That would stink!

 I was thinking that would be very impressive - to be able to kiss one's own @ss.

Dude I am just stuck sitting here waiting on this person at work.... 😡

All my stuff to do is in my office which is like a 10-15 minute walk away. If I go over there, 50 bucks says I get paged the minute I get there.
