Whoa ... $3500 for serval cats. I'm not a fan of keeping an exotic pet as I feel they a better in their natural environment. 🙁 They weren't meant to sit in a house and be a show thing. Poor things.

That's it?! Holy crap some people here will easily spend that much on applications and flights for interviews!

(flamesuit on)

Do you actually have to fill out a form to prescribe something for yourself or can you just walk up and demand some stuff? Can you even write one yourself?

I'm not going to flame you!! That is not a flame-producing post, anyway. 🙂

We don't have to fill out a form - can call them in. I think writing them for yourself is touchy. What most folks do (even for an antibiotic or something) is have a colleague write it for you. You absolutely cannot prescribe narcotics/anything controlled for yourself - you will get nailed for this, the first time. I wouldn't do it for friends or family members either. So I would totally write an antibiotic or something for a friend, but not anything controlled. If I needed something, I would just ask a friend to write it.

Beary, thanks. That makes a lot more sense. It's hard for me to imagine a doctor allowed to write him/herself prescriptions and getting addicted. Then demanding meds and making the hospital obliged. Always good to have a second opinion from someone else to sign. 😀

but you are limited on "where you write scripts?" Just curious. I know you wouldn't just write it for someone *cough cough* but what does that have to do with calling it in across state lines? Or doesn't it? *confused*

I don't know for sure that I can't call across state lines. Maybe I can. I have never tried it. I have never heard anything official on this either way. I'm just so early in my career that I don't want to get in trouble for anything. Make sense?

thats happened a while ago. i remember when you passed me like last year, in one summer you took like a 2k lead 😱 .

i should be studying now... i'm not, man i am the biggest slacker ever.

Study on a Friday night DURING an NFL game? What has the world come to...

If I ever was upfront about med school for my Economist, Analyst, or Accountant interviews, I'd be shown the door asap.

Yea i'm pretty thankful that they might need me, although it will be biatch work (testing and documentation), but I need something.

what do you plan on doing this year?

wow beary thats cool. why would a pathologist need a DEA # though? arent your patients... um.... in plastic jars?

*dont hate me*😍

I don't know. But like I said, to prescribe basically anything you need a DEA # (not because it is controlled, but that is just because how most records are kept. It is more of a bureaucratic thing). And there are times that we would need to prescribe something, particularly on apheresis/blood bank.

You all will get DEA #s when you graduate med school. There is nothing special or fancy about it.

ohhhhhh.. they find ways to divert. I know that among nurses (not sure about docs), L&D nurses have the highest rate of narcotic abuse b/c they have easy access. I did all of my masters final papers on impaired health professionals.

I'll probably call up this guy that e-mailed me a few weeks ago wanting to interview me up for a job in DC, economist intern. I never replied back since I was studying like crazy for last Saturday's exam so I will probably contact him by Monday. If I get that job, I guess I'll move up to DC temporarily.

One reason I'm not crazy about this spot is that is will make it a pain in the ass for interviews. This job doesn't allow vacation until a certain number of MONTHS is put in. So I'd be screwed. Plus, I want to go to FL schools so I'd have to waste money on flying down instead of just driving on $20 of gas.

So as you can see, I'm not crazy about this job even though it's really my only bet. Most jobs in my area are lacking for business fields for entry level. All the jobs I've been applying to really want 1 year of experience at least and of course I'm a recent grad with none. Always seems to be an uphill battle not worth it and it just makes me want to go back to school. It sucks, but I want something to do with my time and make money.

I think it would be very hard to divert. Anesthesiologists maybe could easily get away with it, because they physically push the meds. I sort of know how people do it, and I think you could get away with it a few times, but narcotics are SO closely monitored that in today's environment I just don't see how you could get away with this for an extended period of time.

I don't think it would be any easier for me to divert than any random person. I guess, maybe if I put extraordinary amounts of pressure on colleagues or something? But somebody would end up turning you in, and that would just be a totally sucky thing to do in the first place.

ooooh, the dreaded "you need experience to get the job, but you can't get experience b/c no one will give you the job" scenario. 👎 I've got a couple of those t-shirts.

Yea I know what you mean. My big thing is benefits. I would love to get some benefits for this year because right now i'm off my parent's. They bought me a short term 60 day plan for healthcare but I would feel like such a tool asking them to cover me for the whole year.

I like this whole year off thing, but it's much nicer when you have a set plan.

OMG you could not have said that any better!

Bioengineering is HORRIBLE in that aspect. Every position is like, 5 years experience needed. Like, wtf am I supposed to do with this degree??

from what I recall (and this was the better part of 10 yrs ago), it's easiest in L&D b/c of timing issues. so things like documenting that a woman asked for meds during labor when she didn't... documenting that you gave her (I'm just making this up) #2 50mg tabs, but actually only giving her one and pocketing the other.. if it's something IV or IM, leaving a little extra in the syringe for your own personal use... and the pts don't really notice b/c they're pretty much otherwise occupied.

oh totally. I know you wouldn't I was just curious on how you would find out if you could 😀

Yep. This is exactly how people do it, unfortunately. I think over time though, you end up "administering" more narcotics than your collagues if you are doing this, which gets you flagged. But yeah, it's sad. 🙁 A few folks who started med school with me have already died from drug/alcohol overdoses. And a few more have lost their careers. It really makes me sad. 🙁

Ha, my healthcare expired once I graduated back in May. I don't have any health insurance, LOL!!!! I don't really care. For some stupid reason COBRA quoted me $360/mo!!! What the ****ing crap is that? I'm a 21 y.o. male that doesn't smoke and RARELY drinks. No car accidents, good grades, nothing. Only thing that ever happened was that my appendix was removed. How could this affect anything? It's done. It's not like you need another appendectomy.

I also know of someone who was already on probation b/c of diversion/impairment. She figured out another nurse's Pyxis password. she got caught b/c she used it on a day when the other nurse wasn't even working. 👎

I should just valet cars like one of my friends does over at the Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Stuidos. He makes about $45k a year in cash so he doesn't have to wait every two weeks for a paycheck. Only reason I don't do this is because I think it would look bad during med interivews. Q: So what have you been doing since you graduted? A: Valeting cars. Them: Wow, you have high goals.

Haha that's awesome, living on the edge man

Problem is, i've never had an appendectomy, so I can't take any risks this year🙁

ok, kids- quick COBRA lesson.

COBRA is actually no more expensive than having insurance through your employer/parents. it's just that TYPICALLY your employer (or your parents' employer) pays a substantial amount of the monthly premium- anywhere from 60-100%, which means you don't have as much taken out of your paycheck. Quit the job (get fired, whatever), now the employer pays 0% of the premium and you pay 100%. So it hurts the pocketbook, but there's actually no change in premium cost, just in who's wallet it's coming out of.

This is something that I tried to bring up on the forums but I think since mostly med students/pre-meds are on here not many people took the bait. We had a talk about this at teh non-trad conference last year (not this year) and it was something that really hit me. Its a sad, sad, life and it starts in college. First alcohol and then the progression. Often its not even meant on purpose ....

Hey, at least my car insurance premiums have fallen. I think from $1,000 every 6 months to something like $450. 😀 😀 😀 SO HAPPY!

Lol, well, I don't have any job. 😀 My dad owns his own company and doens't have health insurance either. He just pays cash, HAHAHAH!!! His premiums were so high (in his 50s, smokes, had a small heart attack about 5 years ago). He had to get some kidney stones worked on so he paid about $3k in cash that day. He said he was happy because he saved $9k that year w/o insurance!

My mom's dropped mine (Siemens-Westinghouse) because I graduated. I have to be in school for them.
