I should just valet cars like one of my friends does over at the Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Stuidos. He makes about $45k a year in cash so he doesn't have to wait every two weeks for a paycheck. Only reason I don't do this is because I think it would look bad during med interivews. Q: So what have you been doing since you graduted? A: Valeting cars. Them: Wow, you have high goals.

nah will, you dont just say you were "valeting cars" 🙄

dude, you volunteer at a hospital or you get involved with research... whatever... you do that during the day and then you bank the valet money at night.

"what did i do this past year sir? i volunteered at a hospital and i worked on this cancer research project with dr.arsenic"

did you lie? no, they never asked you if you were a valet. :meanie:

ok, kids- quick COBRA lesson.

COBRA is actually no more expensive than having insurance through your employer/parents. it's just that TYPICALLY your employer (or your parents' employer) pays a substantial amount of the monthly premium- anywhere from 60-100%, which means you don't have as much taken out of your paycheck. Quit the job (get fired, whatever), now the employer pays 0% of the premium and you pay 100%. So it hurts the pocketbook, but there's actually no change in premium cost, just in who's wallet it's coming out of.

/end serious discussion, back to fun

let me tell u--people in the military get amazing health insurance for cheap

This is an EXCELLENT idea. Problem with the research part--UCF isn't that great with this area. I could do hospital volunteering at a nearby hospital (though it would be more of paper filing imo, not sure). I will look into this!

Lol, well, I don't have any job. 😀 My dad owns his own company and doens't have health insurance either. He just pays cash, HAHAHAH!!! His premiums were so high (in his 50s, smokes, had a small heart attack about 5 years ago). He had to get some kidney stones worked on so he paid about $3k in cash that day. He said he was happy because he saved $9k that year w/o insurance!

My mom's dropped mine (Siemens-Westinghouse) because I graduated. I have to be in school for them.
ding ding

I'm worried about one of my clients for that reason- she's turning 18 later this year, barely graduated HS, and has made no move whatsoever to get into the CC so that she can stay on mom's insurance... so I'm wondering what's going to happen at the beginning of the year when she's not in school (POSSIBLY starting in Jan, but I'm not holding my breath) and over-age.

Good post. I totally agree with this.

I mean one of my friends worked at Godiva and the Bombay store in the mall. They understand you have to make money somehow, just so long as you are also doing other things to show continual interest in medicine. I'd volunteer and shadow on the side. I'm sure you can find someone at ORMC to shadow because its a teaching hospital for UF and FSU as well as a site for many residency positions.

I'd also volunteer there or some other hospital or do something else one day a week at the very least while working whatever work you can get. My friend just got a job in a pharmaceutical company but it is very hard to find a good job like hers so take what you can get and do other things to improve your app.

I used to volunteer back at ORMC a few years ago so I am familiar with that place. One of my friends is a radiologist in the Florida Hospital chain. Not really sure I'm that interested in shadowing. I have some friends that are heart surgeons, rads, pulmonary guys, so I just usually hang out with that crowd anyways.

I will call up my old biochem professor because he knows of a research place at UCF he used to work at. Cant' remember on what, but it was somethig I think everyone is familiar with.

Donors still see ads. I didn't mind them before since there was some variety and some were useful. Now that the army jacked all the bandwidth, I'm going crazy.

I see a bunch of ads for Egg Donations. I think they're going after the wrong demographics because the only eggs I have are the 18-count from Sam's Club. Maybe I should mail those in? I don't know!

i was kinda joking but think about it will, really. there is no law that says parking cars is beneath you when applying to med school - they just care that you did something else that year that showed your interest in medicine.

if the job thing comes up, tell them you worked at the hard rock this year. what ass is going to hold that agaisnt you, a job is a job.

OMG OMG OMG

I got as far as the first one - Bob Saget before I almost peed my pants!!!!!!

I'm bumping this link up --- too funny to be lost in the annals of the Random Thread.

Let me catch up:

1. Insurance - check into a company called Fortis - they have short-term insurance that you can get for $30-40/month I had that for a few years after grad school

2. Sesame Street - just the staples when I was a kid (jlw's era, folks!) No Elmo, Zoe, or whatever. For the ultimate laugh - try Wonder Showzen on MTV. OMG!

3. Vodka - Came from the Poles - at least the potato version. It's also made from distilled grain. Keep in mind that the Polish border has changed so much that present-day Russians were once part of Poland, and vice versa. Anyway, my favorite Polish vodka is hands-down zubrowka. You can find more info on google.

4. Forum changes - still have to check them out!

yeah i worked at target--lmao

Yeah - I think you can pay more for wellness stuff, though. Insurance companies also sell short-term ins. so you can talk to a rep or sthg.

I'd rather have emergency coverage than no coverage. no telling when you'll slip on ice or trip and break an arm.

 It was like walking into heaven for my husband when I took him last Nov.!

He's SUCH an AB beer-drinker!

(shameless plug, but so hilarious!)

👍 which is always my problem anyway. I'm generally pretty healthy (current status excepted), but I'm an orthopedist's best friend what with all the accidents.

just be careful with the short-term stuff, read the fine print. I had it for a while, it covered emergency room and urgent care, but no wellness or primary care stuff. and NO pre-existing conditions. bare-bones, folks!
yeah i have something I'm locked into for a year. I have a deductible of $2000 that I have to reach. I now have $625 towards that. Doctors visits are covered which is nice but NO wellness vsiits for a year 😡 I did ALOT of research and most policies are horrible. having a pre-existing condition can suck. Luckily we're just waiting until next year when the hubby will have coverage during residency.

somewhere...... I have pics of my brother and 2 of his friends bowing down at the front entrance- praying to Mecca.

and I just remember during the tour they throw out stats about how many cans/bottles/kegs they produce in a year and his friend Fred trying to show off and saying "Oh yeah, think about what percentage of that we've drank..." and my bro cutting him off saying "ZERO, Fred. We don't even matter." :meanie:

Yeah, my husband was in awe! He also thinks it would be cool if i end up in a residency in STL. Then we can live close to AB and he can take the free tour every day after work and get his 2 free beers fresh from the tap!
