Welcome to Part 6! Everyone did a bang up job by hitting 10k in less than 12 days--11 days 19 hours and 18 minutes to be exact. A new record! 😀

For those not familiar with what we do here, Molly has been kind enough to put together a nice description.

Not sure what the Random thread is all about? Well, here's the answer to all your questions.

It's basically a restaurant. That serves breaststicks. And lots of cute fruit and veggies. And is patronized by a HO. And Tucker Carlson. Vin Diesel, too. Lots of race car drivers eat here, as well. We're very well respected by the Amish... one girl in particular is here almost all the time.

The food is great if you're low on iron. It's not on the menu, but you can ask about the special secret garlic cure home recipe. One of the hostesses often makes weather predictions, but she's not always around. I think she has another job with the government. Or a government. Something like that. One of the other hostesses says "Bitch, please," a lot, but she's joking... don't take it personally.

Forget anything you've heard about the girl who died here from arsenic poisoning. That was a long time ago, and she's still alive, anyway... just busy so she doesn't come in as much. Besides, a little arsenic adds a lot of flavor to just about any dish.

Pretty flowers by the entrance, hey? Lilis, they are. Beautiful. And the music is totally hopping... we have our very own DJ. Looks a little like Brad Pitt.

I guess that's pretty much all you need to know. I'm usually in the corner booth over there drinking a nice glass of wine. You're welcome to join me, anytime. We're open 24/7.

I'll make my own list in that case 😡

jlw, ump, canuck, bb, rad, lili, molly, tanner, supernova, kuba, guju, cozmosis (terps), donut, and dr. mom for good measure.

Good day sir! 😡

teehee ;-)

👍 😍

How's the secondaries coming along?

I think you mean 'how are they not coming along' 😉

Durden, that list I made was merely an extension. However, we will probably not end up going to the same schools because we're not applying to the same schools, lol!

Well I don't want to go to school with you either. 😡 Not that I'd notice you though, since you'd sleep through all the classes. 😉
 i think he deliberately excluded people who were on ana's list. or maybe he doesn't want to go to school with me either.

I just heard that at the rec center a few minutes ago. Isn't there speculation that it could just be an adverse reaction to his painkillers?

He tried to take 35 and his friend told him not to.

He grew up a hard life. Lived with his grandma. She only let them have 1 light in the house on. Never had the heater on in winter. Ate 3-4 times a WEEK. His father never acknowlegded him as a son. He tried to date his half-sister. etcetera

My husband and I want to start volunteering together (we did this a few years ago too at a local hospital).....actually it was his idea......we were thinking of the Red Cross....anyone have any experience with them? Can you guys think of any other organizations?

Habitat for Humanity?

You read me like a book. 🙂

Not the case at all. Are you applying to USF? Something tells me no because of PhD stuff. I will try to apply to Miami if my stats meet their reqs.
I am applying to USF and Miami...those are the only two FL schools I'm applying to. USF has an MD/PhD program... though it is fairly small and new.

😱 Did he know they're related?!?!?

His father split that up when he found up. I don't know if she was half-sister through his father, but if that was the case, it's probably because his father kept saying he wasn't his father. So he probably didn't know better. Still f'd up life as a kid imo.

AAMC has a listing of some great medically-related places to volunteer on their website. I'm not sure how I found it exactly, though. They break it down by region and then by state.

 An excellent point.

Will doesn't want to go to school with me because he's jealous of my school's SEC football prowess. :meanie:

This is true. The autobio doesn't help either. I couldn't ever afford that place anyways.

I would like to stay in the Southeastern US area. I'm almost convinced every US MD school will give me a good eduction so costs are really involved with it for me. You know, not everyone gets offers to be bought like you. 🙂

And thanks for taking the last post for the night (technically this morning). 😡 I was sure I had it wrapped up at around 2:45!

I would love to apply to Florida schools, esp U of Miami....but I think they only take like 35 OOSers, right?

Thanks ....I'll definitely look into that

I confess I still have that 2,000 word beast to write myself.

And while proud of the last post of the night, I was hoping for the double whammy of the first in the morning. 🙁

so my work did this really shady thing where they started to give us monday off as a holiday and then decided yesterday to take it back...so now we have to come in monday. i don't really care either way b/c i didn't have specific plans, but it still seems kinda sketchy to me.

I had to write an 8 page autobio for one of my classes last semester. I'm sure I could just use that and easily apply, but to get a secondary invite would take forever. Plus, I'm not sure what the hell there is to do in TN, no offense...

What kind of field is this in? I sure hope no hospital lets everyone off on a Monday.

I am an OOSer, but for MD/PhD the numbers are small anyway. Besides which, most all MD/PhD programs do not give preference to in-state applicants over out-of-state applicants. So I'm hoping I'll have a shot. Plus I 😍 miami.

that sucks......won't it be funny if no one shows up and you guys all say that you thought it was a vacation day 😉 :meanie:

I work in the research department of a nursing home. It happens to be a Jewish nursing home (95% of our residents are Jewish), which is why they wanted to close down any non-essential operations on Monday (non-essential meaning not directly related to patient care).

oh, and UF does have MD/PhD, but I didn't really want to apply there.

That totally sucks. 🙁

What holiday is Monday? Maybe we have it off!!

Man, I read this story on another forum. This member owns a business in Cali. He has two workers, twin brothers. Their father also works there. A few days before Christmas Day 2004, the brothers got into some road rage argument with another guy. They kept cutting him off and following him. The dude they were following pulled off the exit ramp nearby the twins' employer's business.

One of the twins gets out and the stranger guy gets out and stabs the dude in the heart! Kills him. The other brother comes out and he's cut in the liver. The driver leaves. The guy with the messed up liver lives. The guy that ran away was caught. Turns out he was an ex-Hells Angel's member and an expert knife fighter. He wasn't charged with murder or anything because the courts said it was self-defense. 🙁

I ask then: why does he flee the scene? He could wait for the cops. Also, why automatically attack someone with a knife if the others didn't have knives or guns? Use it to threaten them, not just go attack them. That's like someone wanting to fight you bare fisted and you take out a gun and instantly shoot them. 🙁

 In Nashville?

Well there's college football, wait no that sucks.
What about pro football? Wait, despite Vince Young, that also sucks.
Hockey? No, sucky playoff chances.
Music? Well, only if you like country.
Bars?

The Vols' cheerleaders that wear the black pants are hot, though...

However, they are Vols. 😡

aww, i wasn't trying to offend UF. honestly, i don't know much about the area or the school. but they have a strict MCAT cutoff for OOS applicants and i don't meet the cutoff. 🙁

Ah..sorry about that. I don't like strict cutoffs. I doubt MCAT score is related well to PhD work.

yeah, i don't think it's really correlated all that well. yet for some reason a higher MCAT seems to trump lots of research experience, at least as far as getting the early MD/PhD interview offers. i'll see how it turns out for me down the road, but i know it's possible i might need to reapply b/c of that durn MCAT.

memphis is such a better town than Nashville... Tennessee should really center around that city
