A few ground rules. Everything you post must be RANDOM and more importantly, only peripherally related to the MCAT. See my example post below. I now await Beary's shirtless pic of Carl Edwards. C'mon Beary, A-man is dying to see it. 😀

This is Ana's example:

I really like it a lot. Except for the exams. 🙂 I will feel better once I find out if I passed my physio exam or not. If I did, then I will have made it through one whole exam cycle unscathed and can start to breathe a little easier.

Oh, and I would like not to smell. And to be able to eat without tasting formaldehyde. But, really, that's pretty minor. Anatomy is sooooooo awesome that it rather makes up for it. I actually wish we had more lab time.

How YOU doin', score sibling?

are you applying this cycle? usually it takes forever, i'm not kididing. when i applied back in '03 I was an august MCATer and submitted my secondary around Nov. I didnt get the interview invite until mid-APRIL. I'm serious, I had given up all hope for this place by then since it had been 5 months since I had submitted my secondary so when I got the interview invite I was shocked. Then I got my interview in early May, 10 days later I was placed on the alternate list. again, I thought all hope for this place was lost. 1 week after being on the alternate list I got a phonecall from the dean of admissions. 😍

Dean: now arsenic.... i see here that you've been accepted to school A, B, and C is that right?
Me: um.... yeah, and school D... just got their offer last week
Dean: oh i see.... well the reason i'm calling is to make your decision just a little more difficult. 😍 😍 😍

i freaking LOVE this place, LOVE IT. i grew up here will, this was my hometown med school. i grew up watching the local news and seeing the rescue helicopter land on the roof of the trauma center and the doctors up there rushing to the patient. when i was given the chance to get my MD here I just couldnt pass it up. i told this to the dean but its true, when i first thought of medical school in 7th grade, it was THIS SCHOOL that I thought of. the day i walked into it to interview was a dream come true. even as a florida resident, this was the only school in the state i applied to.

can you tell i kinda like my school?

molly.....i'm pretty sure you passed:meanie:

OK, any time anybody in my program sends an email to anybody else regarding ANYTHING the entire email is filled with "Dr. X, Dr. Y says he enjoyed lunch with Dr. Z. Want to go get a hot dog with Dr. A and Dr. B? Dr. C is available for coverage while we are out eating."

I don't like everybody having to be called "dr" all the time. It's annoying. We're all colleagues for heaven's sake! Not like I don't know they are MDs!

No DO lovin? 🙁

There are not any DOs at my program. There are very few DOs in pathology at all, for some reason. I am not sure why this is.

Would you say it's because they're DO and not MD? How much of a factor do grades matter compared to Step scores? Of course I know Step matters A LOT, but do grades even matter or is it just pass class?

My IMPRESSION (and I emphasize that) is that DO schools do not emphasize pathology as much as MD schools do. Path is middle-of-the-road competitive, though it is becoming increasingly competitive every year. I am sure a DO would be able to get a spot at a good place for path. My understanding is that few of them apply. There have been some threads about this in the path forum - you could search there for more info.

I think grades definitely matter some. Especially during your clinical years, your grades will be highly correlated with the comments from your faculty that go in your Dean's Letter. It's cliche to say, but I think that for both med school and residency applications folks are looking at the whole package - grades, standardized test scores, research, ECs, etc. Me, being an MSTP applicant only applying to research heavy places and going into academics, everybody looked closely at my research and that was the major focus of discussion at interviews. If you were applying for rural community FP residencies, I am sure clinical experiences would be a much greater focus of attention.

Wow, that would bug the crap out of me, too.

If they're going to be that way about it, you should make them call you Double Doctor. Or maybe Dr. Beary, MD.

How much time did you have for ECs? It seems like some of the current randomites in med school are always pressed for time. 🙂 I suppose a small research project could be done during a summer for the regular MD programs.

 I love it. When I give talks, I used to just put "Beary" on the intro slide. Now I put "Beary, MD, Ph.D." But for heaven's sake, any time anybody calls me Dr. Beary to my face I tell them to call me Beary.

I threw in ECs for med school apps. I don't think it matters at all for residency apps. They don't expect you to be well rounded anymore.

I think most med students that do things that would be considered ECs do things OUTSIDE of medicine for a change of pace. I did a lot of stuff with the homeless in my community when I was in grad school, but really because I was passionate about it and had some time then.
