how's your studying going guys? are you freaking out? burned out?

this is our stress relief thread....or our group anxiety thread, whatever..... 😀

for those of you that have no idea what the mcat random threads are about, check out molly's explanation:

MollyMalone said:
It's basically a restaurant. That serves breaststicks. And lots of cute fruit and veggies. And is patronized by a HO. And Tucker Carlson. Vin Diesel, too. Lots of race car drivers eat here, as well. We're very well respected by the Amish... one girl in particular is here almost all the time.

The food is great if you're low on iron. It's not on the menu, but you can ask about the special secret garlic cure home recipe. One of the hostesses often makes weather predictions, but she's not always around. I think she has another job with the government. Or a government. Something like that. One of the other hostesses says "Bitch, please," a lot, but she's joking... don't take it personally.

Forget anything you've heard about the girl who died here from arsenic poisoning. That was a long time ago, and she's still alive, anyway... just busy so she doesn't come in as much. Besides, a little arsenic adds a lot of flavor to just about any dish.

Pretty flowers by the entrance, hey? Lilis, they are. Beautiful. And the music is totally hopping... we have our very own DJ. Looks a little like Brad Pitt.

I guess that's pretty much all you need to know. I'm usually in the corner booth over there drinking a nice glass of wine. You're welcome to join me, anytime. We're open 24/7.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO POST HERE, you're welcome to jump in at anytime. Here's the final tally from part 7:

Truer words have never been written.

AREAS OF FOG ARE EXPECTED AGAIN OVERNIGHT...WITH LOCALLY DENSE FOG REDUCING THE VISIBILITY TO ONE QUARTER MILE OR LESS IN SPOTS. THIS FOG IS DUE TO A CONTINUED LIGHT FLOW OFF LAKE ERIE AND LAKE ST CLAIR.

Um, expected? Look outside. Oh that's right, you can't see outside because you couldn't see your hand if you put it in front of your face.

I would say that visibility is WAY WAY LESS than 1/4 mile. Actually was extremely disoriented - I kept feeling like I was falling while I was driving because I literally felt like I was driving off a bridge or something since I couldn't see ANYTHING.

*trembles, pour wine*

yesterday was really bad too... the fog hasn't really settled in too heavy yet here again... not as bad as yesterday at least

OMG. Yeah, I remember watching that. I highly recommend a large amount of intoxicating beverages.

An even better extremely bizarre movie is Pi: Faith in Chaos. (just kidding, even alcohol won't get you through that)
Just finished... I think the scariest part was how many of the people giving commentary had MD after their name. :scared:

Wow I am sorry to hear about that beary.

That reminds me of the movie "The Fog" 😳

Thanks Nik!! 😍 How is your little sis doing?

This Russian spy story is crazy. I didn't know stuff like this actually happened. I have never heard of polonium before.

beary--i think i watched something about that before--totally freaked me out if we are talking about the same thing! my lil sis is doing better now--she demanded chicken nuggets and actually kept them down so that is a good sign. A nurse at her doctor's office said that they were getting a lot of calls this morning about kids getting sick--it usually just happens because of all the excitement/running around. have a good night!

Hey Ana, I was just catching up on some WoW (haven't played in two weeks! :wow: ) and was TOTALLY getting called a newb by all these jerks gy camping in the bgs!

I vividly remember one time playing with my roomie at the time and getting called newb in some game... we laughed and I said, "Listen you're probably some 12 yr old or some guy in his 30s who has never been laid" and they said, "Oh yeah? I bet like guys, I bet you're gay" *imagine that grammar was much poorer*

I was like, "Well you're right on one count."

I continue to stand my ground on the education debate. It's important to at the very least get a HS diploma to keep more doors open to you. Why would someone throw that opportunity aside - it's free and offered to all US citizens to give a basic education (yes, we all know that in itself is debateable!!!! 🙄)

I also feel that college is specific training for a specialized interest (much like trade school is too). Medicine is not solely learned at residency. Residents don't start their first day learning the heart, lungs, etc. Their basic training IS med school, residency is where it's put to practice. And besides, residency is considered graduate medical education.

Not everyone is cut out for every job, that's why there are admissions requirements to the programs, and those that have the aptitude get their training through their degree. Sure, some random firm could train Joe Blow to be a lawyer, but it's much easier and efficient to have standard forms of training (i.e. law school), and this is the point I was trying to get across to my BIL.

Sure, there are always going to be self-starters that don't finish high school, (And Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard, not high school), but I was referring directly to my BIL, who was asked not to come back due to 62 dyas of truancy his senior year and then committing a felony involving a high-speed car chase. I don't care if he gets his GED or not, but I care about his daughter's welfare and opportunities 15 years from now when she's a high school senior/college freshman (hopefully!). It would upset me to think that he would take on the attitude that education doesn't matter, just be motivated and you'll get anything you want. To some extent, that's a great attitude, but there will always be occupational pitfalls without even a basic education that the majority of the rest of the country has.

I know, I know, I know there are exceptions to every rule, but I don't know too many college grads living on welfare (unless they were marketing majors LOL) but I do know many HS dropouts that are on welfare.

Um, BB...who exactly backed into this pole? Would it by chance be the person asking how much it would cost to have it replaced? 😉 I know the cost of many repairs...that is not one of them. Good luck.

Hola peeps. I haven't been following the edumakation discussion too closely, but Meg's right Gates didn't drop out of high school...it was Harvard. Michael Dell dropped out of college early on...and look how bad his machines are! Of course, look how spectacular is bank account(s) are! Furthermore, I have to agree that a HS diploma is FREE. Take it. I don't understand people who don't. I had a friend who dropped out and got her GED I asked her why. The answer? "High school just wasn't for me, I didn't like it...I was bored." Um...yeah...um...ok. Now, she is not on welfare and has worked for many years. But, that is not the way it often works. In HS all you have to do is PASS for goodness sake.

Ok, that was my $0.005 to the convo.

Thanksgiving was fun. A bunch of cousins, their fams...and my sister and her fam flew up from TX. My sister, BIL and niece drove down yesterday and we spent the day together. It was great. The weather was gorgeous...which was welcomed since we have had rain and more rain for the last few. But, cloudless and upper 60s--awesome.

I want to go shopping today, but PWH is opposed to the idea. I really must win this one. It is vital to my existence as a woman. LOL.

Two more weeks in the semester. I can't wait for it to be over! I have to spend the break learning everything I DIDN'T learn in Chem. Ugh.

I never said it's okay to not have a high school diploma or GED. This is about whether or not this guy should get a GED to "set an example" for his daughter to show that he "values education." No, I don't think he should get a GED. It won't further help his goals and I seriously doubt it will somehow influence his daughter. He'd be better off spending that time with his daughter and being a mentor. If he tells her that she should drop out of high school than yes, I have a problem. She should be making her own decisions and high school is already easy to begin with.

College isn't a specific training. Those would be technical schools or trade schools. College is very broad and is meant to allow students to try new things. That's why there are still "general education requirements" in college (at least mine). One of my marketing professors said that college students will end up retaining only about 10% of the information they "learn" in college. He's right. The vast majority of the material I learned is not remembered (there was A LOT of material at least in my classes). Medical school is similar. The "heart" and "lungs" is not what a doctor practices. Sure, there are simple tests a doctor learns in med school. How to read an EKG, blood pressure information, very basic family doctor diagnosis, etc. Anything on biochemistry? No. My radiologist friend says he doesn't remember most of medical school. Beary has said the same before. He learned everything for his job (radiology) in residency. I know another radiologist that didn't even learn everything in residency. He was still in training at a private practice after residency and his licenses because the equipment and patient cases were not 100% the same.

I was borderline ready to drop out of high school and get a GED. I was planning to take community college classes and get an AA degree and go to college. I decided not to once I found out my school system allowed students to substitute classes at the local community college for classes at high school. The best part was that the classes and books were all paid by the school system so I opted for that instead. I didn't learn much in high school. That all stopped after middle school when I had the basics done. The only time I actually learned something was in my dual enrollment classes (at the community college) and my AP classes (calc 1, 2, and psych). Other than that, "honors" and regular high school classes were a waste of time. High school was just worth it for the social experience.

College is much of the same--go there for socializing. Only professional schools really start to teach what you want to learn and can apply in life. I'm glad I had a full ride for college because I don't think it was worth it.

There are a few reasons for college imo:

1) Social experience
2) Degree is a req for job applications
3) Weed out to separate you from others for grad school (GPA-wise)
4) To try new areas before settling on a career path

Notice I did NOT say to train you for a job. That will come at least 90%+ from on the job training. Both of my parents are electrical engineers. They deal with new graduates regularly and enigneering degrees are some of the most technical out of other college degrees. If you think these students can start the job on day 1, you're wrong. My dad frequently tells me he can't believe how these kids don't know much. They eventually pick everything up on the job, not school.

Williams: I think I may have mis conveyed the jist of the argument - it was mainly over education in general. I asked him at the beginning if he ever planned to finish HS - he asked why - I mentioned for his daughter - he said no - so we left it at that. THEN came the discussion on education in general.

Since I don't know much about actual med school classes, I can speak for speech-path.

It would be really, really hard and really really time comsuming to teach someone off the street how to understand the theories, anatomy/phys, assessment, treatment, etc. to someone. It's much easier for them to be in a program that targets that. We learn all of the above in classroom, do a year of clinicals, then off we go. We even have a 9-month "residency" of sorts (which is too long to explain here) where we are supervised by another SLP who has completed the appropriate training.

I imagine the same for med school on a grander scale. I really didn't like being called a snob for advocating for higher education and telling my BIL that joe blow can't walk off the street and expect to become a lwayer, doctor, banker, etc. overnight. That's what educational programs are for.

I gotta go see the Tenacious D movie now! They're the greatest band in the world, self-proclaimed 😀

I really need to work on a budget. Every month I have a few hundred dollars less than I did the month before. 😱 This trend will be able to continue for approximately 1.7 more months according to current projections.

I'm going to sit down today and try to figure out where I can make cuts. I really don't want to give up broadband internet, cable TV, netflix, or WoW. All of which are monthly subscription fees.

Ugh. Do I ever know what you mean.

There are tons of websites online that'll help you with that. I found a few when I was living on my own but apparently Google hates me and won't let me find them again 😛

They take your monthly income and using percentages they tell you how much you should be spending on different categories... it's really really helpful.

Wish me luck! I'm braving Walmart this afternoon to pick up some stuff that my dad needs :scared: At least I didn't need to go yesterday.

(Oh and to the Randammes... have y'all ever seen "What Not To Wear" on TLC? I'm thinking about nominating my best friend but I'm not sure if she'd kill me or not.)

Thanks for the tip! I was just sitting down looking at things and XM Satellite Radio is another subscription fee. 🙁 (Another thing I don't want to give up!) My lunches at the hospital are an obvious thing where I could save a lot of money. I buy my lunch every day which runs probably around $8. The thing is though, that's the healthiest thing I ever eat.

Other than that, I don't have a lot of frivolous expenses. Groceries, gas, that's about it. I have already way cut back on how much money I'm spending on wine. My new niece/nephew on the way sure isn't going to help things with my budget! 😉 😍

I LOVE "What Not to Wear"! That is the best show. I would kill anybody if they nominated me.

Report: Mailbox is just pushed over. Nothing broken. 🙂

Excellent news BB. 😀

I tend to have problems with concrete posts and things. These can do significant body damage to your car while incurring no damage to themselves. It's not my fault they just jump out and hit me! 😉

It was actually me being really dumb. My defroster was on but I had limited rear visibility. I was like 30 feet from the road and I tried to just back out using my side mirror. Why was it so hard for me to just turn around?

Gators squeeze by again... this one should hurt them

Yeah, I have watched it .... many times. I NEED to be nominated. I am such a fashion failure.
