how's your studying going guys? are you freaking out? burned out?

this is our stress relief thread....or our group anxiety thread, whatever..... 😀

for those of you that have no idea what the mcat random threads are about, check out molly's explanation:

MollyMalone said:
It's basically a restaurant. That serves breaststicks. And lots of cute fruit and veggies. And is patronized by a HO. And Tucker Carlson. Vin Diesel, too. Lots of race car drivers eat here, as well. We're very well respected by the Amish... one girl in particular is here almost all the time.

The food is great if you're low on iron. It's not on the menu, but you can ask about the special secret garlic cure home recipe. One of the hostesses often makes weather predictions, but she's not always around. I think she has another job with the government. Or a government. Something like that. One of the other hostesses says "Bitch, please," a lot, but she's joking... don't take it personally.

Forget anything you've heard about the girl who died here from arsenic poisoning. That was a long time ago, and she's still alive, anyway... just busy so she doesn't come in as much. Besides, a little arsenic adds a lot of flavor to just about any dish.

Pretty flowers by the entrance, hey? Lilis, they are. Beautiful. And the music is totally hopping... we have our very own DJ. Looks a little like Brad Pitt.

I guess that's pretty much all you need to know. I'm usually in the corner booth over there drinking a nice glass of wine. You're welcome to join me, anytime. We're open 24/7.

Guests just left. Nothing caught on fire

Now to tackle the huge pile of dishes... using the nice china/silver seemed like a good idea but now that I'm having to wash it by hand... not so much 😛

Hey, sounds like you had a great time.

Now you have plenty of time to finish your washu app  😛

Happy Thanksgiving randomites!

Hey, I had a dream about all of you last night. We were on a plane and crash landed in Alaska. It was sort of like Lost - we were all stuck up there for a long time. Anyway, most of you were in the dream. 😀

I have had a really nice Thanksgiving. Got in to Cincy last night, slept a ton last night and today. This evening we watched Cars - so cute! Now I'm going to watch GA, and plan on having jlw over tomorrow. 👍

And, go Huskers!! :meanie: I'm going to head back to A2 tomorrow after the game, so will be a late night. 😱

Hope you are all doing well! 😍

Hola Peeps.

Thanksgiving was fun. GA was awesome. Now, PWH and I are cleaning in prep for sis and fam coming over tomorrow. (Ok, at this very moment he is cleaning and I am typing 😛 ) But, I am really looking forward to having the 3 of them over tomorrow (my niece is ADORABLE). BIL and PWH plan to watch TV and perhaps go see a movie while sis, niece and I go shopping. That's right...shopping. Let's see how long we last in that horrible Black Friday madness with a 15 month old. 🙂

Ugh - I tried that last year. All I can say is go with God... because he's the only one getting you through that! Have fun with the family! 🙂

I actually sat through all of GA... aren't you proud? 😉 🙄

I'm crashing for the night... I'm so worn out!

I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. 🙂

Weird about that dream beary - you were in my dream last night!!! I don't remember all the details but you were visiting at my house and you and my husband were getting along so well (the whole Matrix thing, hehehe).

So.... I had an interesting debate last night with one of my brother in laws. He is a high-school dropout that actually beat the odds and became successful - he is a foreman for a construction company. We got to talking about school and he mentioned that he never finished. I asked him if he got his GED. He said no. I asked him if he ever thought about getting it. He asked why. I said to set a good example for his 4-year-old daughter that education is a valuable thing.

He then proceeded to engage me in a discussion about the "system" and how even without a diploma he can do anything he wants to do. I gave him the example of what I'm doing now - working my way to medical school - I can't just go out there and perform surgery. He said "why not, all you need is someone to teach you - you don't need a degree!" I told him that's what the degree is and not everyone can do it (mentally, physically, etc), so there is selectivity in admissions and such. He then proceeded to call me a snob and did the nya nya face with his hands and tongue, at which point I abruptly ended the conversation and my husband and I left. He was also pretty drunk, so I'm not really mad at him, just disappointed that he thinks education is a farce and that I'm a snob for actually pursuing medicine. I don't know if he really feels this way or if the alcohol was talking, but I went home very disappointed in him.

Any thoughts about this you guys, or about education in general? I gave him the generalities that educated people make more money, are more successful in their careers, etc, but he seems to think this is just a product of a "system". I just don't get it right now.

Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving.

Megboo - I think most of here are going to be on your side with this. 🙂

For me, education is not about making money or getting a job. It's about growth as a person. I learned more about myself in college than I think I ever could have working at a random job (even if it were some well paying job that required no education).

Of course, good jobs and salaries often come as a result of education. 😉

I really just enjoy the process of learning and feel like there isn't much out there on which my time would be better spent.

And he does have a point that you don't need a college education to be educated - you can teach yourself lots of things. But who really does this?? I personally only know one "educated" drop-out - and that was my grandfather. He quit school in 6th grade to help out his family but still read and constantly taught himself new things.

That's hilarious that we dreamt about each other the same night!

There is a bond between all Matrix afficianados. 😎

Yeah - this is a pretty biased forum 😉 just had to vent a little. I really like the guy, I just wish he valued education more.

Well, I'm not going to lose sleep over it, but I do have to get some Xmas stuff from the basement then get to bed!

Night all!

Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving.

In my opinion, a "formal" education doesn't mean you'll be successful. In fact, I think the current education system of the US for the most part is not good. Sure, there are trends about degrees obtained and income, but they're just that--trends. The most successful people were already really smart to begin with (I'm NOT talking book smarts even though some were, too). They don't need a PhD, BS, or even GED to do what they can and want to do. A degree will just open some doors for you with jobs that require them as pre-reqs. Some places automatically screen you for a job if you do or don't have a degree. I don't consider obtaining a job that requires a degree being "successful." Being successful is setting YOUR goals in YOUR life and reaching them. Some of these goals may require a formal education, others not. I.e. if you want to become a physician, you'll need a 4 year degree, MD/DO, and licenese to practice medicine. Jobs like these of course require the formal education so he was wrong in the statement referring to med school (understandable, probably drunk and most don't even know med school pre-reqs like us).

I know a few people that didn't go to college. It just wasn't for them. College isn't for everyone. I don't think I'm better than someone because I have a college degree nor do I expect people to get a degree because most think it's the norm. Sure, a lot of jobs now require a 4 year degree to get in, but if someone is motivated enough and has set goals that don't require a degree, there's no use in spending 3+ years and thousands of dollars in an area that will not help reach your goals. As far as setting an example, I never understood this part. I think most people automatically assume they need a degree to go somewhere in life. If the child is undecided on what he/she may want to do in life, they can go to college to try new areas. If they know what they want to do, they make their own path. They shouldn't follow their parents' steps unless they want to do the same thing in life...

I realize this about the educational system, but my point was to set an example to his daughter to at least finish high school, not college. I know full well not everyone is going to go to college. My husband didn't - he went to a trade school. But I feel success without a high school diploma is an exception rather than rule, and many educational studies back this up (Journal of Higher Education).

I set an alarm for 5 am and one for 10 am... figured whichever one I woke up to, that would be my plan for the day.

Woke up from a dream at 10 am... my dad said I was out so cold he had to turn off the first alarm

Megboo: I value education for education's sake. But my BIL never finished college (owns his own construction business) and my sis has a degree in business, but I can tell you two things: 1. I've never seen a family value education for their child so much and 2. I've never seen a family that would be so supportive regardless of what that child decided to do.

For me, not just personally but also within my family, not going to college was never an option. I'm pretty sure my parents would have stop speaking to me if I had announced I was going to work for awhile before college. It's a double edged sword; don't push your kids towards education and run of the risk alienating them. Push your kids to their potential and push them to find out what in this world makes them happy, and maybe that career doesn't involve tons of schooling.

Okay I'll end my rant now 🙂
