how's your studying going guys? are you freaking out? burned out?

this is our stress relief thread....or our group anxiety thread, whatever..... 😀

for those of you that have no idea what the mcat random threads are about, check out molly's explanation:

MollyMalone said:
It's basically a restaurant. That serves breaststicks. And lots of cute fruit and veggies. And is patronized by a HO. And Tucker Carlson. Vin Diesel, too. Lots of race car drivers eat here, as well. We're very well respected by the Amish... one girl in particular is here almost all the time.

The food is great if you're low on iron. It's not on the menu, but you can ask about the special secret garlic cure home recipe. One of the hostesses often makes weather predictions, but she's not always around. I think she has another job with the government. Or a government. Something like that. One of the other hostesses says "Bitch, please," a lot, but she's joking... don't take it personally.

Forget anything you've heard about the girl who died here from arsenic poisoning. That was a long time ago, and she's still alive, anyway... just busy so she doesn't come in as much. Besides, a little arsenic adds a lot of flavor to just about any dish.

Pretty flowers by the entrance, hey? Lilis, they are. Beautiful. And the music is totally hopping... we have our very own DJ. Looks a little like Brad Pitt.

I guess that's pretty much all you need to know. I'm usually in the corner booth over there drinking a nice glass of wine. You're welcome to join me, anytime. We're open 24/7.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO POST HERE, you're welcome to jump in at anytime. Here's the final tally from part 7:

AMCAS verified today... damn I'm late... and there is a mistake! back in line for another couple of weeks.... 🙁 I think I should just throw in the towel on this year 😳

i'll probably only send out secondaries to a small fraction of my primary school list....

anyways, Hello Everybody!
Ugh! That sucks 🙁 I'm sorry!

Welcome to the 2006 Holiday Edition of Getting to Know Your Friends! You know the drill. Don't be a scrooge!!!

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate?
I'm addicted to Mint Hot Chocolate - it's really sad!

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? Depends - my parents divorced when I was little so I always had two Christmas mornings. Santa didn't wrap at my mom's house but did wrap at my dad's (Read: My sisters aren't as lazy as my mom 😉 )

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? White - I think there's nothing more beautiful than white Christmas lights 🙂

4. Do you hang mistletoe? Nope.

5. When do you put your decorations? My mom and I always did it the day after Thanksgiving... I remember the year they moved the UT vs A&M game to that day because I had to wait til the game was over to decorate the tree. 😡

6. What is your favorite holiday dish(excluding dessert) My family has a tradition of mashing potatoes and turnips together. Don't judge, it's amazing 😍 👍

7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child. As a child? The midnight Christmas eve service. The church was always so beautiful and to me Christmas eve night still holds all the religious significance.

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?
Okay again: no judging.
I was 12 (yes, 12). I don't think I still believed he was a person but a part of me still wanted to believe (and still does). But my grandmother started laughing and said, "Aren't you kinda old?"

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? Again - 2 Christmases so one usually happened on Christmas Eve night (before church) and the other the next morning. So yes.

10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree? Lights then ornaments... not really sure what this question is asking.

11. Snow! Love it or Dread it? Love it!
My favorite Christmas memory (not from childhood) involves snow. When I was in high school, my sister stole me away from the family Christmas eve to take me to services (because she knew how much it meant to me). When we came out it was snowing big Frank Capra-esque snowflakes. I can still see it in my mind. It was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. We just stood there watching it fall and listening to the sound it makes for about 10 minutes. Then I pegged her in the back of the head with a snowball and we proceeded to have a 20 minute snowball fight in the parking lot while the people coming out of the service laughed at us.

12. Can you ice skate? Last time I went was with my kids in Belfast. Yeah, it still hurts to think about it. No I can't skate at all.

13. Do you remember your favorite gift?
Okay no way that you'll believe me, JLW. But I actually got a cabbage patch kid that Christmas too (I was 18 months, yes I remember this, vaguely) I loved it at the time but it means more to me now because a few years ago my sisters told me the story of driving all over Ft. Worth to find one for me. 😍

14. What's the most important thing about the Holidays for you? Showing love to the people important to me... a few years ago I would have said "family" but after Christmas in Belfast, away from my family and everything I knew, I realized that my family is so much more than the people related to me by blood.

15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert? Snow ice cream! We make it every year in Indy (even if there's no snow - my sisters save some if they get it before Christmas so it'll be waiting for me in their freezers!)

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? Forcing my family to watch Charlie Brown Christmas for the eleventy billionth time 😀

17. What tops your tree? An angel!

18. Which do you prefer giving or Receiving? Yeah I'll be honest: both. Though I really do love the look my family gets if I pick out something really perfect! 😍

19. What is your favorite Christmas Song? Hark the Herald Angels Sing (yes, I'm a frank capra junkie)

20. Candy Canes! Yuck or Yum? Eh - I could take or leave them.

Welcome to the 2006 Holiday Edition of Getting to Know Your Friends! You know the drill. Don't be a scrooge!!!

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate?

Never had egg nog before, and the thought of drinking egg scares me. Hot chocolate it is.

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?

Santa knows of my OCD tendencies... Christmas isn't Christmas if I can't attempt to remove gift wrap without a tear.

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white?

White lights hang off the house, colored lights hang off the trees.

4. Do you hang mistletoe?

My parents do, but I make sure to steer clear of that doorway.

5. When do you put your decorations?

In my apartment it is impossible with cats 🙁 But at home my mom can start as early as right after Halloween or as late as a week before Christmas. (FYI: In the Philippines the Christmas season starts September 1st!!)

6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)

Everlasting. I'm not sure exactly what's in it... but I think there's some meat. And hard boiled eggs. And olives.

7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child.

Hanging out with my dad while he was setting up for a Christmas party (that I finally got to go to when I was 12) and trading Garbage Pail Kids cards with the other tagalongs. I must have been seven or eight.

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?

I figured it out early on. Yea I did the sit on Santa's lap and tell him what I wanted, but for the most part my mom just asked me what I wanted and I got to help her wrap them.

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?

When we get together for Christmas, people don't start coming over until 8 or so. Then we eat for a few hours, and those who didn't go to Christmas mass yet, go to the midnight mass. When everyone is finally back, that is when we open presents. So... no.

10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree?

I leave the decorating to my mom. I just put on the ornaments that are out of her reach. We have at least two trees up: the big one in the foyer, which is usually a red theme; and a tree next to the fireplace, which has been a white and gold theme for the last two years. One year she put up a tree in the upstairs sitting area, and that was a nice blue theme.

11. Snow! Love it or Dread it?

My snowboard is ready for the season to start... WHERE IS MY SNOW!?!?!?

12. Can you ice skate?

I have mastered the art of stopping via ice rink wall/victim in my way.

13. Do you remember your favorite gift?

A book about a boat that sailed on land. There is video of me reading aloud from it... and sneakily tripping my sister over.

14. What's the most important thing about the Holidays for you?

Being home.

15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert?

Butterscotch cream cheese bars. I used to make it every year for Christmas/New Years. My sister actually brought it up at Thanksgiving how we never have it anymore... I guess I'll have to make some then.

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition?

Sorta Secret Santa. My family is HUGE- any family gathering will have at least 20-30 local relatives- so getting gifts for everyone is pricey. We probably started this about ten years ago, first started with just the parents, and then the older kids joined in. Everyone that participates buys a gift that is no more than 50 bucks, and cash or gift certificates are a last resort option. The gifts are numbered and the numbers are thrown into a hat. You pull out a number and that is your order you go in to pick a gift. You can grab whichever gift you want, but it's all about strategy: because the people choosing after you can choose to take the gift you picked, and you have to pick another. It can get quite hillarious. I think the last time I participated I got a vacuum 😳

17. What tops your tree?

An angel.

18. Which do you prefer giving or Receiving?

To be honest, I'd rather give gifts to my family and friends. I really have more than I can want.

19. What is your favorite Christmas Song?

I'm not really a Christmas song person.

20. Candy Canes! Yuck or Yum?

They rot your teeth. Yum.

Welcome to the 2006 Holiday Edition of Getting to Know Your Friends! You know the drill. Don't be a scrooge!!!

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate?

Hot chocolate

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?

He wraps them. 🙂

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white?

I like white lights, hubby likes colored ones. So we got white ones for outside, colored on the tree.

4. Do you hang mistletoe?

No

5. When do you put your decorations?

Usually in the week after Thanksgiving. I'm debating whether or not to put the tree up this year. I have a feeling it will be a constant battle to keep the baby away from it.

6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)

Stuffing.

7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child.

Sadly, I can't think of one in particular. I've always had really nice Christmases, though. 🙂

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?

I was 7 I think. I was playing with my friend Michael down the street and was talking about the Easter Bunny. He informed me that there was no such thing. I went home and asked my mom and she confirmed it. Then a lightbulb went off and I asked if Santa was make believe too. She said yes. I went back to tell Michael that there was no such thing as Santa either. He didn't believe me and went crying to ask his mom! Such mean kids we were .....

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?

Yup!! Presents on Christmas Eve and a big dinner on Christmas day. My family has done it this was for years and my husband and I do it now too. It's nice to spread Christmas out over two days instead of one and this way we can sleep in on Christmas day.

10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree?

Colored lights, tinsel strands and lots of ornaments. 🙂

11. Snow! Love it or Dread it?

I like the first snowfall of the year. After that it gets old really fast!

12. Can you ice skate?

Umm, no.

13. Do you remember your favorite gift?

One year my older sister and I begged and begged for this big expensive Victorian playmobile dollhouse. We opened all our presents and the dollhouse wasn't there. My mom let us think we didn't get the dollhouse for about ten minutes before she announced, "Oh girls I think I forgot one present in the other room!" and brought out the dollhouse. That was so much fun!

My favorite gift in recent history, though was the Dyson vacuum my mom got for me two years ago!! 😍 I never thought I'd be so happy with a gift to clean my house! LOL

14. What's the most important thing about the Holidays for you?

Being with my family. 🙂

15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert?

Pumpkin Cheesecake.

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition?

I like opening presents on Christmas Eve.

17. What tops your tree?

An angel.

18. Which do you prefer giving or Receiving?

I like both, but it's really fun when you get a gift you've been wanting for a long time!

19. What is your favorite Christmas Song?

I HATE Christmas music. I'm so weird.

20. Candy Canes! Yuck or Yum?

Yum! I especially like the green ones.

you guys remember the video link i posted to nine crimes by damien rice the other night? apparently they used the song on grey's anatomy, pretty cool.

ps.... cristina and burke are both gonna end up with hepatitis if they dont start using eye protection with all the blood thats flying around those OR's.

damn you surgery, tempting me with how cool you are. why am i so indecisive about what i want to go into?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? ughhhhhhhhhhhhh 🙁

i just wish i knew already
Dude - you've got so much time! You'll figure it out.

Just make sure it's a residency you can do in Ohio/Michigan/STL/Texas else there will be a randomite revolt.

Awww... that's a tough decision. You still have a long time though! :luck:

thanks beary. i know its still months away before i have to commit but its still crazy. i really really really liked being in the OR, REALLY. EM was my other top choice but after 3 weeks in psych ER dealing with case after case of drug abuse and detox, i dont know if the ER environment is what i want day in and day out for the rest of my life.

now comes medicine...... we'll see. i have a feeling i'm going to like it but i think i'm gonna love surgery when i have it right after med. why do i have to like so many things? why couldnt i be one of those surgery gunners and just be one dimensional?!?!?!?!

the other thing is the competitivesness, jeez... i heard EM was worst but the whole thought of gambling it all on gen surg and then scrambling into geriatrics or something freaks me the hell out.

sorry for the long post you guys, its just that as my 3rd year goes on more and more people from family, to faculty to other med students are asking me what i want and i'm just......... 😕 🙁

What about trauma surgery? Is that a gen surg and then a fellowship or what?

you're so sweet ana. i swear, if i do fall in love with surgery this spring i wouldnt care where i matched. hell, i'd even apply to........... texas. 😱 😱 😱 😱 :scared: :scared:

😛

i've def thought about that or cardiothoracic if i was to go the surgical route. i dont know, people have told me i'm too nice to be a surgeon. bastards, i should cut them.

:meanie:  😛

yes, believe it.

Two words: Red Duke 😉

Oh yeah and this is my favorite Damien Rice song:

i just flashed back to OB when i scrubbed into a c-section and the attending had me stick my hand into the incision and feel the top of the fundus... literally, my hand disappeard inside the abdomen. what a ruuuuuuuuuuuuushhhhh.

oh crap, let me get my mind off of this stuff. must.... go..... back to psych for 1 more day.

glad i caught a couple of you guys online, ttyl everyone! 😍

It is such a tough choice. But I had forgotten you still have surgery. I bet that will really help you make your decision. There will probably be things that you unexpectedly like, and don't like.

Good luck on your psych shelf too!

penguin! sorry i have to go, we can catch up tomorrow. i have to go play psychiatrist for one more day. 😀
boooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

it's OK. with any luck, I won't be going into work tomorrow.

*whispers so Tee doesn't hear*
It took me almost 90 min to get home tonight, from what is normally a 25 min drive. We had rain last night, followed by sleet, which changed to freezing rain. As if this didn't make the roads bad enough, the temps keep dropping so all of it is going to freeze shortly, and what comes down will be snow. Which means that by tomorrow morning, we're expected to have at least an inch of ice covered by 6-8 inches of snow.

So I reiterate- hopefully we can talk tomorrow, assuming I stay home from work. 👍
