Our lovely Randames.

i'm in manhattan now
in the apple store.
this store is so cool looking
i was over by presbyterian hospital and HSS on 71st street (east side). it was a most excellent nyc trip (though pretty short). i got to tour a lab of one of our collaborators at HSS. really really really cool place.

LOL. Guess what I'm doing, jochi? a lab report 🙁🙁🙁

You trying to get on Russia time?
Haha, I might get a lab report going, too, for physics - I can't decide whether to do 3 labs and then write 3 reports at once, or do one lab, one report, one lab, one report, etc (the labs are all pretty closely related to each other).

Well, actually, I'm just being lazy, and by nature I'm more of a night owl, so now that I no longer have to be on a set schedule due to work, my true nature is coming out. However, yes, being on Russian time helps somewhat....but I think it might be more efficient going the other way, or else I won't sleep at all on the plane - by the time it's my bedtime, it will be morning over the Eastern part of the Atlantic, so the light will keep me up.:hardy:

It's easier to adjust when you come back than when you go there. However, it helps that I'll be arriving at like 9 PM, so considering how pooped I'll be, I will probably sleep decently on the first night.

I couldn't do more than one at a time unless I had to. I like doing about a half a report at the time. hahaha.

HSS is the Hospital for Special Surgery. It's a big research hospital that specializes in orthopedics/rheumatology/rehab/sports medicine type stuff. It's part of Cornell med sch.
cool
I never go above 60th st so my knowledge of the upper east and west side of new york is non-existant

I like to stick with my downtown+ midtown area

FINALLY! My lover e-mailed me and said my rec letter is out today. 🙄 👍 Gotta prod the 3rd person now.:meanie:

Hello! Where is everybody today?

I did really bad on our resident in-service exam. I hope that that doesn't get around. 🙁

jk... i got nothing. 😛

don't worry about it too much, beary! we still love ya! 😍

a question for you randomites
How does working in as a paralegal look for med school? I know it has nothing to do with clinical exp or research but it's just something I can do for the year while I'm applying.

I'd say do it if the cash is right. Assuming you have some of the other experience under your belt.

Work is work. At least i'm employed, I suppose.

I'm trying to get some things done, but i'm a little stressed. Just scheduled my 2nd Chem test for Thursday morning and i'm probably getting last week's anatomy test back tonight. That could be scary. It was kinda vague. :scared:

Back to kinetics. Studying my a$$ off.. I want the a.

In other news, my "momentum" lecture went well this morning. p=mv. Got it. 🙂

I think if you can get a good employer LOR out of it and sock away some cash, that would be great. Otherwise, it won't matter one iota for med school.

Go study your kinetics. That's an important MCAT topic too. 🙂

Yeah, I also can't decide whether to take on 10-20 hours at the hospital where I'm gonna volunteer. It's nice to have some extra income, and there is definitely the temptation, since I'm doing my coursework via correspondence, so my schedule is somewhat flexible...but honestly, I just loathe the kind of atmosphere that surrounds you when you work those dead-end office jobs. I'd rather just take on another couple of grand in student loans - my undergrad loans will be a drop in the bucket compared to med school. And while working looks nice on your app, when you're in school full-time AND volunteer, it's not really that crucial anymore.

Ahhh, I wanna go to med school in Canada...I was looking at tuition yesterday, and it's only $16,000!:scared:

yeah, docfunk, i agree with Q and bowtie. if you want the experience, and if the $ is good, go for it, but don't expect it to make a big difference on your app.

wow, that's so cheap jochi!
The best deal I've seen is for TX: med school tuition at any of the TX schools, including Baylor, is like $6500 per year. It was WAY cheaper for me to go to Baylor than for me to go to any of my state schools, all of which charge around $20k and don't give scholarships. Plus, and I know Ana will back me up here, Baylor is a totally awesome school. As much as I liked UF and USF, it would be insane to pick either one of them over Baylor, which DOES give scholarships. 😍

my app is pretty much locked in. I don't even think anything I do from now until interviews really matters much.

Plus I just want money so it works out.

Thanks guys! 👍

actually, the only thing i was worried about is that it would look bad on my app.

My state school is about $10,500. I'm definitely hoping to get in there. LOL.

Never, ever do ANYTHING with the consideration of whether it will look good or not look good on your app. I say this for two reasons: 1) You can't ever get into the mind of the adcom and know what they think looks good or doesn't look good, and 2) these people have much experience with premeds who are trying to game the system. They'll smell insincerity ten miles away.

You know what? If you want to do the job, and you need the money, than do it, and do it with as much passion as you possibly can. That's reason enough right there. My guess is that adcoms won't care much one way or the other. But like I said, if you can get a strong LOR out of the deal and sock away some dough, you're coming out ahead in the game.
