So I'm flipping through a new issue of Vogue and there's an ad here (for some sort of female sexual stimulant, no less) that says in big letters: "1940 - women were given the right to vote!"

I was like, I swear, wasn't it 1920? I checked, and yes, it was 1920.

I'm gonna e-mail them and laugh.:meanie:

haha that's hilarious jochi. watchin "immortal beloved", the movie about beethoven . sad tomorrow is sunday, the weekends pass too fast.

Yes they do. I actually have the entire weekend "off" (a rarity in residency), but have a ton of work to do tomorrow. 🙁

Did I tell you guys we got our kitten last weekend? 😍We went with the name Staccato (and call him Cato). He is such a sweet kitten. He purrs all day long I swear.

He doesn't like the dogs yet. The dogs are so good about giving him his space, though. If they get too close, all he has to do is growl and the dogs go running. I just love that a 4 month old kitten can control 40 pound dogs.

OK, I'm officially a *****...I just spent 2 days on the Maryland secondary, PAID the fee, and it looks like they don't accept Canadian permanent residents! I remember e-mailing them about it, and I THOUGHT they said they do, but now I think I was wrong! GAAHHH!!!

They probably won't refund me my application money, either....I haven't actually submitted the secondary yet, though, so I think I'll at least try and see if they might consider it. What a waste of resources!👎

that sucks big time 🙁

Wow, they'd actually go to the trouble of sending you a secondary and take your money, even if they aren't going to consider you? That sucks...

They send secondaries to everyone...also, my AMCAS has me listed as a Canadian citizen, because there's no way to list permanent residence status anywhere other than in the US on there - so I have been e-mailing individual schools to update them.

I'm gonna still try and see if I can get the fee back, because it doesn't make sense for them to keep it given how I didn't even submit the secondary....but based on my experience with the whole app process so far, I bet they'd take my $ and use it to fund some retreat where they talk about how much they hate international students.🙄

Ok, I need some input...so I'm going to Minneapolis this Wednesday and will be stopping by my alma mater and another school where I took 2 courses. I want to come by the offices of my 2 LOR writers when I'm there. Now, I'm a bit torn up on the whole gift/token of appreciation issue.

1) LOR writer one - LOR has yet to go out, I gave her a Sept 7 deadline (right now I only have 2 schools I need it for), so she's stil working on it. So it'd be kind of unethical to come by with a gift. HOWEVER, she's my former advisor, taught me in multiple courses, was very nice to me when I had trouble after freshman year (I couldn't find a place to live and she even offered me to stay at her house until I found something!), and gave me a department award upon graduation. So it'd be unethical to show up more than a year since I've last seen her without a gift, as well. So, what do you guys think - I'm thinking, I'll buy some flowers, nothing ridiculous, but still nice. Would it be ok? I don't wanna come by empty-handed, but I also don't want this to seem like I'm "bribing" her.

2) LOR writer two - I wasn't even a student at his school (took 2 courses with hm through an alliance program we have among private colleges in Mpls/St Paul), but he still agreed to write for me, and he's been GREAT at keeping on top of his letters - I can tell he sends them out the same day I e-mail him with a request. So he's already sent out a bunch - but will still be sending some later. So I wanted to drop by and say thanks...would it be appropriate to give him a gift now? I'm thinking just a box of Godiva chocolates or something (he's got a major sweet tooth, plus it can be regifted easily if he doesn't need it).

I'd wait so there would be no ethical concerns, but I don't know when I'll be in Mpls next - I HOPE to get an interview at U of Minnesota, but of course, it's no sure thing.

don't give gift until after the letter is written and sent.

Then give something under $25. A gift certificate, plant, good book (the better you know them, the more personal you can get). Pingouin is known for her baked goods gifts and taking LOR writers to dinner.

I have sent gift cards to Starbucks since my profs are addicted to java.

Hmm, I guess I could tell my second writer to send the rest of the letters now - I generally just send him requests in batches of 3s once I start working on the schools' secondaries, but I guess I could request the rest of them right now.

I still gotta hear from 4 in regards to secondaries, though...but then I'd feel it'd be rude if they found out I was not in town and didn't come by OR came by and didn't even bring anything. I already goofed up in April when I last visited - I brought flowers for my former work supervisor who works in the same building as LOR writer 1, although on the next floor, and then I MEANT to go see LOR writer 1, but got too caught up in inebriation activities with my friends to do it. So I've been kinda paranoid that she might have seen that my old work supervisor got flowers and that she may have told her it was me who had given them to her....

Lessons - don't drink and give gifts to profs.

think I'm goin to submit my secondaries this week and pray that my lor writers come throug... I'm sure they will but there's no point on my secondaries being delayed bc of me. grrr. I'm ready to be done. prayin I blew ps out of the water and it'll help me get a lettter from new physics prof.

when are scores being released?

ABSOLUTELY. It's like their little reward for a job well done.

Speaking of that, I know one of my LOR writers through his private practice, but technically he's on faculty at one of the local med schools. You know, the really really prestigious one. Since I've had a couple schools ask the academic affiliation of the LOR writers, I shot him an email asking if he had listed it just so everything looks on the up-and-up (given that's not how I know him).

His response (my editing in brackets):
I signed my letter with Assistant Professor of {his specialty}, {Really Good University} School of Med. (Now I feel so important).

 :horns:

Lawl - we went to a USA vs. Munster rugby match today and had seats in the 8th row behind Munster. My husband also Tivo'd the match on the Setanta network and just started watching it. And guess who they decided to use to focus the camera at the beginning?

My chubby butt holding Joe's nachos. Classic.

He was like "Meg! You're on TV and so are my legs!" He was standing while I was sitting.

Good news! Although their website explicitly says they only accept citizens, the e-mail response from this morning stated that they DO take Canadian permanent residents. On the downside, they said that my ties to the state don't give me any advantage whatsoever, which kinda sucks (one of the main reasons I applied there). Anyway, I'm glad I didn't waste $70 and 2 days, after all.

BTW, thought of Funk this morning...I went to get my mail and there was a thin envelope from UVA. I was like, ALREADY!? I just submitted my secondary on FRIDAY! :wow: Turned out it was just a paper copy of the secondary invite they had already sent via e-mail.... Reminded me of Funky and his Upstate thinvelope.

Oh guys... what a disastrously long (and boring) physics lecture on deriving the kinematic equations from one another today. Wasn't too over my head, but I'm going to have to practice deriving them... grr.

I have 3 hours of homework time before I'll be back. Wish me well.

(Got USA in the mail this am *crosses fingers*)

I thought it was pretty good too. Very entertaining, but I didn't like how they filmed the action sequences (with the camera moving all over the place). I left the theater with an awful headache.
YES, me too!! Those action scenes were really crazy and jumpy.

Baked goods aren't the only thing Pingouin uses on her LOR writers. :meanie:

whatcha get?

Nothing for me yet, but not expecting. My files are incomplete until those last two LORs get in. Asking for one next week, and one the day I get MCAT scores back (as long as my PS score isn't worse than the last time, LOL). I should be complete everywhere by Oct. 1.

1 hour of homework time left and I'm running low.. going to work on some things for ADV (my grad psych class) that are more long term. I gave up on physics for the evening after another hour or so of hwk, I'm ahead on everything, so all is well. I do have a bonus assignment.... i'll do it wed morning tho.

It bugs me to no end that my online course platform is down tonight... that means no gen bio/gen chem I work. I'm ahead on all that too.. but still. I have an hour of productivity i'm about to "waste" on grad school...:laugh:

So I sent a message on Facebook to this friend of mine who I met in the orgo labs - she lives in another province. She had applied to med once 2 years ago, but got rejected (pre- and post-interview). She just wrote her MCAT in June and got what's a golden score in Canada (10 or higher in each section and above P in WS). She was thinking of taking Orgo II with me, so I asked whether she was gonna do it and also asked about how things are going in regards to med....and she's like, "Hey, guess what, I'm not applying to med anymore! I absolutely love research and realized that I really want to do a PhD instead! I'm so excited to start next month, I know it's the right decision!"

It was so random! Just a month ago I was discussing apps with her, and now she's not even applying - and with her grades, MCAT scores, and MSc, I'm 100% sure she would have gotten accepted somewhere in Canada - she would already be getting 2 automatic interviews. But you know she has to be completely serious about this PhD thing if she's willing to pass up on a very good chance of getting into medicine...

I also feel envious in a way - although I can certainly relate to the giddy feeling that comes with finding out what you truly want to do, I envy her because the career she has chosen is nowhere near as competitive, expensive, and uncertain as medicine. She's going to have flexible hours, will be paid to go to school, and given her field, shouldn't have too much of a hard time finding employment - and it took her less than a month to arrange everything she needed to get going - she didn't even have the PhD in mind when she started her MSc, compared to how med applicants have to plan years ahead to have a chance at getting admitted. Don't you ever wish you were interested in something that didn't demand as much from you as med?
