Also - beary, Arsenic, anybody else - I have a question re: PhD in med school.

As a former doctoral student switching to medicine, I plan on applying only to MD/DO programs not MD/PhD or DO/PhD programs, mostly because I want to concentrate on the MD/DO degree. I've been thinking though, what could I do in the event I get through my 1st or 2nd year and decide I still want to pursue a PhD in addition to the MD/DO? Do some schools have options to enter a PhD program while in med school outside of the MD/DO/PhD route?

I have found myself in A&P class switching to doc student mode by thinking of interesting research ideas and can see myself really wanting to pursue them if the resources were available. Anyway - anyone have any info about that?

I'm bumping this up to see if anyone else can answer - should I also post it in another forum???

I think it may have something to do with the fact that TX has about 6 inches of topsoil and then it's solid rock. That's what has always been explained to me - too costly to build basements - my church had one but it was in an area with a deep bedrock.

I used to be a Meteorology major before I discovered my loathing for math. I'm jealous Mushy!

basements are scary anyways

I could answer it for you, but since you didn't see fit to consult me, I am not going to tell what I know. 😡 :meanie:

wow, there are a lot of tall girls in here! i'm definitely not one of them (5'4"). i used to be really strong in the upper body b/c of gymnastics, but i'm definitely not anymore. i can still squat like a mo fo, though.

and those tornado pics look pretty scary, even if i can't see all the green. we had a (little) tornado once at home...but it was pretty much more like an XL thunderstorm that caused the power to go out for a week.

Sorry I didn't answer your question earlier - I was a little riled up. 🙄

I think it is great that you want to do research. You can join an MSTP after a year or two of med school, but it sounds like that is not what you are looking for. Personally, I don't think the "Ph.D." part of research training is all that useful (Q and anybody else please feel free to disagree). Research training takes time at the bench, giving presentations, writing papers. You don't need all these stupid classes, thesis committee meetings, TA for stupid labs, and then writing a dissertation. You will want things to be as efficient as possible. Becoming a physician takes all your energy and passion. Becoming a scientist takes all your energy and passion. Trying to both well feels like a superhuman thing to attempt, and distractions need to be really minimal.

So if I were in your shoes, I would take a path where I do med school and pretty much focus on that except for maybe summers and you could attend seminars in your area of interest. Then look into a research track residency where you can short track your clinical training and do about 3-4 years of dedicated postdoctoral work. At the end of this time, you should be able to get a KO8 or similar NIH award (that's an NIH grant for young investigators). One of the big advantages of doing an MSTP is the no debt, but since there is such a shortage of physician scientists right now the NIH has debt repayment programs for MDs pursuing research careers.

I hope that helps and please let me know if you want to discuss it more. I am very interested in the whole MSTP vs separate MD/PhD vs MD/research postdoc route. Also, you may want to post your question in the MD/PhD forum.

Yeah huh!

I just threw out beary, Arsenic, anybody else because I wasn't feeling well and didn't want to keep typing.

Did you happen to run across this on your interviews? I think this would be a good question for me to ask someday if I'm lucky enough to sit in front of a grueling ad com 🙂

When do you leave for your 2nd look?

I still can't see your pink. I wonder if I'm color blind.
I am not PINK. Pink is for sissies. I'm PURPLE. Purple is for royalty. 😀 In all seriousness, I think it must be your browser. I can definitely see it.

Ok, so the answer to megboo's question is yes, you can transfer into an MD/PhD program from a straight MD program. It's actually a lot easier to do it that way than it is to do it the other way around (i.e., from straight PhD to MD/PhD). But I think that beary has some good points, and that one thing you might want to consider, megboo, is doing an MS instead. (Or do you already have your MS? I can't remember. If you do, then you definitely don't need another grad degree; you can do research as an MD/MS or a DO/MS.) You can also opt to get the MD, then do a research fellowship afterward. I might argue with ol' beary about the usefulness of the PhD more if megboo weren't a non-trad who already had some graduate level research experience. But seriously, megboo, I don't think doing an MD/PhD is the best use of your time at this point.

Ok MCAT related thread - just spoke with a friend who said that she had 3 straight physio questions .... Since bio doesn't really cover the questions she answered .... is MCAT transforming now?

I don't really have a clue - but maybe those were experimental?

My form didn't have any physio that I can recall.

Yeah, I remember the PhD program I was in before. It wasn't too bad since I already had my M.S. and didn't have to take 2/3 of the required courses. I don't know that I would make research the bane of my medical career, but I think it's very important to be involved in research, esp. in the medical field, no matter what or where you practice.

That's why it's still in the back of my mind. I know the MD/PhD programs are super competitive and I want to be able to acclimate to med school my first year and not have to deal with PhD stress. But, I would like to pursue interest areas once I identify them after M1-M2.

Also, Q, do you see yourself doing research during med school with your orgo background? I forgot to ask earlier.

I must be having an off day - I forgot completely about the MD/PhD forum!

This is exactly what I want to do. I was actually discussing this with 2 med students who said I wouldn't have time to do research and if I wanted to do research do PhD. But I see doctors MD/DO's publishing all the time with PhD's so obviously they have some time to publish. I want to be involved in patient care but research is so very important.

This is part of the reason why I'm scared to go DO because I have a feeling I would want to go into a research based field but more and more DO programs are emphasizing research which I think is great.

You and I can compare notes when we get in.

Med school is such an abstract idea right now (getting more tangible as time goes on!), and it's funny how I think I'll have all this time to do MD, PhD, bake cookies, sew, take bubble baths and curl my hair (LOL).

I'm sure once the M1 hits I'll be all "PhD - pfffft!" My M.S. is in speech path, but I'm REALLY interested in all things neuroscience. But, I can see success in research from a collborative effort.

It will also probably depend on where I end up going to school, too, but I think research with a mentor during med school and getting into a residency with strong research goals will be good for me to satisfy that area of work.

I posted my question in the Scientist forum so we'll see what others have to say.

I'm getting dizzy again. Time to lay down. I dreamt I was Pauli Walnut's gooma last time I laid down!

Sounds good. I think its important for all to stay involved. I am worried about family and school. :scared: How to balance it all?!?!?

Get some rest. I am going to study before the next round of thunderstorms hit. I have a weird feeling about tonight.

I think its because I was watching discover channel on Extreme Weather: Supercell Tornadoes.

Dude, some people in hollywood are so freakin SKINNY! This chick from 24 is on Ellen and she's a waif. 😱

Yes, it has everything to do with that...not to mention the land is so cheap that people don't tend to worry about building down...they just build out.

Anastasis, HOW DID I MISS THIS? I love meteorology. Actually I was considering persuing a degree at OU, but yeah the math isn't appealing. I'm taking meteorolgy class this fall 😀

Ok, I went to get my Rx sunglasses and while we were waiting hubby and I walked around. We had dinner and then up the escalator we went...there it was
COLD STONE! I almost lost it. So, we went...

Guju...you asked which of the 3 (Maggie Moo's, Cold Stone or Marble Slab) I like best. I have a new favorite. Ooh.. and I tasted the Cake Batter ice cream that you were talking about Anastasis .... holy freakin' cow... I am in love! Of course, hubby couldn't pull himself away from chocolate. Chocolate ice cream with chocolate chips and brownie mix-in.

And one thing I never thought that I would ever agree with...
