How depressing 🙁

Totally with ya there. I especially took it hard when John Ritter died since I loved watching Three's Company as a kid (and watching the reruns as an adult).

I was online circa end 1995 - started with email/Eudora.

It was cool... I remember getting a "Happy New Year everyone!" in the email January '96 because a member had mass-mailed [email protected] - the ISP had not yet figured out how to firewall-off the member list-address.

Such a tight-knit community.

Over in Singapore about the same time, a cousin would regularly play telnet trivia - I never quite figured out how to work those BBSes.

Anyone here ever use PowWow?

First website: I believe it was Yahoo 🙄 Rapidly followed by Yahoo webchat. The Internet was a quiet place in those days - webchat was one of the few ways you knew there were other people moving out there.

Gonna be on roaming dial-up for the next month... a sure sign that I'm supposed to be studying - if not for rotations then for Step 2.

I too started using the internet in 1995. And my internet capabilities also started with Eudora. That was the first year I started doing undergraduate research work and people were checking email constantly. Hence, I decide to get in on that too 😀

Internet was very quiet in those days. Internet entertainment stemmed from joke emails that were being spread around at that time (Top 100 Mama jokes, etc.). Of course now you can find all that with a quick little google search.

My innocence was lost when George Peppard (aka Colonel Hannibal Smith) passed away in 1994. Of course, I was 18 at the time, but he was a big tv star to me growing up. I am sure there were others who died before then but I very much remember him.

Oh damn...I love that show! A-Team along with Chips and TJ Hooker were some of my childhood favorites.

What ever happened to Mr. T anyway?

Trivia question - anyone know Mr. T's real name? 🙂

Lawrence Tureaud.

I like Mr T. He is one of those people who don't take themselves too seriously and is very unique.

But let's see...80s TV shows. Truthfully I didn't watch a ton of them.

A-team
Dukes of Hazzard.
I watched Hunter a few times.
Family Ties
Facts of Life (yup)
Golden Girls.

Good job yaah. I pity the foo!

Ah...those 80's shows. I watched all the ones above (except Golden Girls...Bea Arthur gave me nightmares...seriously). Other one's I watched were:
What's Happening? (and What's Happening Now?)
Different Strokes (it's all about the Circle of [what you talkin' about!] Willis)
Cheers (that was one of my favorites too).
Wonder Years
All in the Family (I think this really counts as a 70's show but I watched it in the 80's 🙂 )

Yar I remember The Wonder Years. And Hunter. And that helicopter show with the catchy soundtrack. Air-something?

Freakin' internet is freakin' slow tonight (she says as she looks a month of impending dial-up in the eye...)

Airwolf, I believe. Jan Michael and Enrie Borgnine. Not that I watched alot of TV . . . 🙄

For some reason I consider Wonder Years a 90's show. It's just not enough 80s. I guess maybe because it took place in the 60s! 😉

Definitely cheers though - despite growing up so close I never actually visited the bar. It's weird when you live in a city where something famous is, you feel like a tourist if you go there. I did go on the freedom trail and some of the famous gravesites, the USS Constitution (old ironsides).

The only Cheers bar I have been in was a knockoff one in Quincy Market, plus the one in the Detroit metro airport. Weird, huh?

I think I did visit some of Whitey Bulger's favorite crime scenes though.

Tough NOT to have visited a Bulger crime scene if you had so much as a connecting flight through Logan. 'Course, you were up close and personal with the Bulgers, at least for a time (UMass reference to non-Massholes).

Yeah, Billy Bulger left UMass during my last year of med school, so he did not attend my graduation in his duties as president of the U.

What a shady business that all was.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!! Red sox yankees starting very shortly. If you hear of a michigan path resident dying of a brain hemorrhage, a perforated ulcer, or an alcoholic coma, remember me fondly.

Yes...the one event I've been looking forward to today will soon arive. I dislike the Yanks. In fact, I hate the Yanks.

Go Sox! Show Daddy who's Daddy!

Addemdum: And BTW, what the heck is up with Mussina? That guy is a traitor. He used to be on the Orioles but then he leaves to join the rival team! Ah...I remember the days when the O's were a semi-respectable team and people actually called the O's-Yanks games rivalry games

It's the old "reverse lock" hypothesis. Never fails in baseball.

To wit:

Everyone says Red Sox will win game 1 because Schilling is a big game pitcher, Mussina has lost every game 1 he has ever started, etc. Thus, who wins? Yankees. Although it isn't over yet, but basically it is and I will go to bed early. If they come back in win, well, shut my mouth, I will be surprised and happy.

It's like last year's division series with red sox and A's. Pedro pitched game 1, everyone said "Red Sox HAVE to have this game, blah blah." Well, red sox lost. And still won the series. And last year, game 1 of ALCS, Mussina vs Wakefield at Yankee stadium, red sox sleepy from having to travel from Oakland to play. Who wins? Yup. Red Sox.

As well: Whenever starting pitchers are Pedro vs some 19 year old rookie who has no control and is making his first big league start, pick the rookie.

Hypothesis is blowing up for tomorrow's game though. Normally Yankees would be a guarantee because it is Pedro vs John Lieber. However, Yankees believe they always beat Pedro. Thus, Red Sox would be guaranteed winners.
The tiebreaker goes to the Yankees: game 2 will be considered a "must win" for the red sox if they lose tonight, thus they will also lose game 2, but yet come back and tie up the series.

Who knows. The only thing I am sure of is that the announcers will fall over themselves trying to praise Jeter more than the other guy. OMG! He singled to center! Call the Hall of Fame, this guy is a winner! Did you see the way he fielded that grounder? Legendary. No one does it like him. 🙄

i like your reasoning.

this game sucks

screw this, i'm gonna pop in a movie.

It only works when it's a lock. Thus, tomorrow is a funny one, because since there are multiple reasons why both teams are "locks" to win, it should be a tossup. But the reasons why both teams can be considered locks are strong ones. That is why I am going with the Yankees tomorrow.

Game 3, for example, will be Arroyo vs Kevin Brown (I think). Tossup.

THEY SHOULD APOLOGIZE PUBLICLY! (for The Curse, that is)

ARRRRRRGGGGHHHHHHH.

It's almost enough to make me want to dump our season tickets (well, not really).

P

Another trivia - What movie does this joke come from?

Q: What do you get when you cross an owl with a bungee cord?
A: My ass.

I turn away from the game to watch a silly movie...and what happens?

The Red Sox score 7 and have the tying run on 3rd base!

Quickly...time to change the channel...good things can't happen when I'm watching the game!

I am still packing, intermittently.

The reason for this is that I decided yesterday that a 4 week-stay should be crammed into your average trolley bag.

Today however, I was convinced by a variety of women that I should take the larger Samsonite.

I suppose it can't hurt - at least I'm not Greyhounding it back or forth.

For any stray wanderers onto this thread, I'm not talking about interviews.

So it was all your fault, you idiot. MOJO is a powerful thing. That is why people continue to wear the same shirt, same underwear, whatever.

In actuality, I think that is all crap. I don't blame you at all. I blame the darn team for coming out so poorly. Well, tonight is a different game. Hopefully a different result. I may have to watch the game on mute though because McCarver and Joe Buck just simply cannot get enough Derek Jeter.

I used to like McCarver 'cause he really is knowledgeable, but he's gotten to be as bad as Vin Scully, going on and on with incredibly meaningless stats. If these guys (Johnny Miller is another example in golf) wouldn't read their press clippings, maybe they would stay with what they know-good insights with concise analysis about the game.
Hey, how 'bout that Man Ram? He almost got Canseco'd with that fly ball last night on top of his head. I really thought this might be the year for the Sox, but I don't know...Wanted to see a rematch of '67 Series.
Can't believe they are showing both games tonite simultaneously-guess you can't win, though-other alternative is to have one game in the afternoon when most people work and kids in skool.

I'll take the afternoon game. That one might actually end before 10pm.

What was interesting about the broadcasting team last night was the Al Leiter was there, and he was about 10 times more interesting than McCarver. He actually made good points, and kept the ballwashing to a minimum. When Matsui slapped the single to left in the first, McCarver kept saying "GREAT PIECE OF HITTING, WHAT A PLAYER, WHAT A TEAM" blah blah. Al Leiter: "Or, he was just lucky."    Awesome.

First game doesn't mean much. Sox won game one last year and look what that got them. Twins won game one, look what that got them.

Switching gears to college football...this Miami vs. Louisville game is turning out to be pretty good. Wow...I didn't know much about this Louisville team until tonight...but they're looking impressive (so far).

Wow 24-7 Louisville...and counting!

Here I sit broken hearted.
Louisville blew the game. My night just started.

Doesn't that suck? I watched a bit of that game - halftime it was a 17 point lead. Then I saw this AM Miami won. Consarnit. I hate those "almost" huge upsets in college football (like Marshall and OSU earlier in the year). Because the pollsters don't really care and Miami won't drop in the rankings.

Regardless, I root for chaos in the BCS every year - my hope is that this year there will be a couple of undefeated mid-major teams (like Utah) who go undefeated and get left out of the BCS. Or, 3 undefeated major teams so one gets left out.

It was a very good game though. Momentum is such a huge thing in college football and clearly momentum was on Miami's side in the second half. Yeah, that game went on until pretty late!

Some things about BCS I like. However, I have some problems with the BCS as well. It's hard to tweak but some tweaking is in order to make the BCS system more improved. I too root for chaos in the BCS. I also root for every team ranked above Michigan to lose such that Michigan can lose 3 games and still be ranked #1 in the AP and/or ESPN polls - HA! That's never gonna happen!

The visiting professor today told us about a guy who died by drowning in chili - he got trapped between a vat of chili and something else, passed out, and fell face forward into the chili and was stuck, and drowned in it.

Ever see the movie Porky's? that almost happens...well not really almost.

Darnit I wanted to stay home tonight and watch the red sox lose again to the yankees. Instead it is rained out, and I am stuck here with goshdarned dialup (AGAIN) watching TCU vs UAB college football.

On the bright side I got a bulletin from my college which included a photo of my 5th reunion (which I couldn't attend since I was moving at the time).

All the slackers still looked like slackers. All the stoners still looked like stoners. All the football players now look like wanna be football players with the same facial hair. On the bright side though, this girl who was mean to me is now twice the size she was in college. Listen to me, I'm such a beeyotch tonight. Rrrawl!

I am so happy - it is getting colder outside. Soon it will be time to start wearing gloves!

Today would have been perfect temp - 40s or so, except there is a little bit of scattered spitting rain which isn't that great. The leaves are turning and starting to fall. Can't beat that.

So long, summer! Don't let the door hit you on your way out!

You know something else? Cher is really unattractive. I saw online on some news site that for her 60th birthday she wants to pose nude. Dear me, I hope that will be easy to avoid seeing. I don't want to go blind.

Starting to fall? 😱
Here they are crunchy brown bits on the ground.

And they are predicting snow! Tonight! Already! And for the next four or five days!

But what's new. We got the usual teensy dusting in September.

I'm not a big fan of this weather. 50's-60's with a slight breeze with clear and sunny skies...that's my kind of weather.

The varying colors of leaves are nice though.

OMG, it's colder than a witch's tit today. And it's even more windy. Ultimate frisbee today is going to be quite interesting.

Changing of the avatar is like the change of seasons. Different mood here now. Since med school ended, I've picked up the electric guitar again. That pic is my guitar (well same make that is) hence I was in the mood for making that my avatar.

Time for uninteresting trivia that only Andy cares about (again): Which guitarist wields a guitar with a scalloped fretboard?
First person who answers correctly gets a ****** Cartman portrait signed by your's truly.

Eric Clapton?

I have no idea.

Cold weather is nice. Embrace it! Of course, this from someone who hasn't been outside all day today. But I haven't turned the heat on.

BTW, I hate ultimate frisbee. My college was like the mecca of ultimate frisbee and I was forced to play on a few occasions. Grrrrrr...Yaah no like. Although I must say Ultimate is about 10x less objectionable than frisbee golf. Many was the time I walked out of the science building only to be nearly brained by a well thrown UFO. One time I picked it up and threw it to the side. That got them mad.

That's OK. Don't get too angry. I can call Henifer Lopez up and have her give you some taco kisses if you'd like.

The guy with the unpronounceable name.

First off, I did not mean to cheat 😉

My familiarity with the guitar is elementary at best, so I Googled "scalloped fretboard". Guess whose name came up?

I don't understand the science of the scalloping though. What exactly is it meant to achieve?

And what is frisbee golf?

Too many questions!

Yngwie Malmsteen.

He has a Fender Strat model with scalloped fingerboard, right? I've never heard any of his music, though. From what I understand it's not really my style.

What kind of stuff do you play Andy? I play electric guitar and actually play in a band with a interventional radiology fellow and a radiology attending. We aren't particularly great, but it's a good way to blow off steam. Unfortunately they insisted on a radiology associated name-Inversion Recovery-something to with MRI or crap like that.

When I play by myself or with other friends we like O.A.R., Ben Harper, Weezer, Foo Fighters, RHCP, Tool, and right now trying to work on some Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I was thinking it would be sweet to be in a band of path residents! I know several of the residents at UA play instruments. I'm hoping to get in another band wherever I end up in residency and act as rock ambassador from the path world and prove we are not just weirdos, but also rock stars and other interesting hobbyists!

Bingo! I raise my bottle of beer to you! That's right...Yngwie Malmsteen, one of the influential neo-classical speed metal guitarists of the 80's. Nicely done.

I play metal. I can play most of the Metallica and Megadeth songs. I play some other 80's rock stuff like GNR, Def Leppard, etc. I'm trying to learn some Dream Theater and the Yngwie songs (however, the latter is very difficult). I've only started playing guitar since 1st year med school which is something I picked up since I never went to class and I was bored all day. Regardless, I like jamming with friends and doing improv stuff.

I sure agree with you in that playing guitar is an excellent way of blowing off steam. I would play Slayer songs when I was on internal medicine (nah, not really, I was addicted to online games when I was on IM...hehe).

I totally agree. I will be asking that on interviews..."Are there any bands I can join?" There are a few scientist bands I know of that do a pretty good job rockin. Ira Mellman at Yale plays bass guitar in a band which I think may have a pathologist. Then there's Burt Vogelstein at Hopkins who also plays in a band. Anyways, if we end up at the same place, we must rock!

I gotta get a new amp though. My amp is ****. I need a set of Marshalls.

Regular guitars have flat fretboards. Hence when you push down on the string, your finger makes contact with the string but also with the fretboard between two given frets (amounts to resistance to sliding your hand in different positions when you play scales). Now when you play on a guitar with a scalloped fretboard, you pushdown on the string but only make contact with the string and not the underlying fretboard. That results in less resistance felt by the fingers which can facilitate playing fast scales and runs. It's kinda like your fingers are gliding on the fretboard. Some also feel that you don't have to press as hard on the string to produce a note on a scalloped fretboard. This may also contribute a guitarist's speed. This and the decreased resistance also enables for better vibrato as well.

It's golf but instead of using a golf ball and clubs, you throw a frisbee towards the designated target.

I'm psyched today. We won our first fall league game today...against a good team too. I think the cold weather and wind affected them more than us 🙂

Sometimes baseball just stinks.

If I didn't have to prepare a journal article for tomorrow I might be drinking heavily now.

On my third right now. 🙁

Actually, two of them have been water, but the first one . . .

Next year we're going all the way. The '05 team is the team of density (sic).

I have to post this - from the red sox fan board - this gets posted everytime Ortiz does something awesome (which happens like every 3 minutes). They call him Ortizzle because he is such a cool customer.
