I find it somewhat amusing and somewhat disappointing how many of my facebook friends share links on facebook to articles from satire websites thinking they are real....

I know! Especially when all it takes is a quick scan through Google news. I cried though when I found out that the guy who effed up the lighting of the Olympic Rings. So tragic.

There's one person in particular on my friends list who believes everything she reads on the internet. I'm constantly commenting on her posts with links to Snopes articles. Then she gets mad at me because apparently encouraging critical thinking and discouraging the spread of incorrect/misleading information makes me a terrible person. 🙄

I usually try to resist saying something because when I do I usually get a rude response like "nobody asked you". I don't get it. Saddest part is when facbook "suggests" three articles below these posts all about about that article is fake...

I was just reading that the Copenhagen Zoo euthanized a "surplus" giraffe to prevent inbreeding...they later dismembered it and fed it to the lions in view of the public. Not sure how to feel about this...thoughts?

Read that too...I think it was more of an educational dissection and not a "now where's my chainsaw?" moment. And it's legit to feed the big cats that meat so as not to further waste the animal since it wasn't given barbituates.

It's a tough call on the reasoning though. From what I understand, they could not have accepted the monetary offers due to zoo guidelines. The problem of inbreeding is obviously of concern in captivity, and paying to house/feed/care for an extra giraffe not directly "contributing" to the gene pool is not something to be taken lightly. Overall I think it's sad, but I'm not sure I see a way around it except to stop breeding them from this point forward.

I saw some pictures of the "dismembering" and it's pretty clear that the vet (or zookeeper?) who did it was explaining things as he went along, using it an educational opportunity. There was quite an interested-looking crowd there too. Anyone who didn't want to see it could easily have walked right on by. And I liked the way the zoo PR staff explained feeding the meat to the lions - even if they didn't get the giraffe meat they still need something so either way an animal will be killed.

I do have a problem with the fact that this needed to be done at all though. If they didn't want/need more giraffes, this one should not have been born, period. There are a variety of ways to prevent this that would not have been detrimental to their breeding program in any way. It just seems like an incredibly irresponsible way to handle the whole situation, IMO.

Some things to keep in mind here are that 1.) there usually is an age cap on transferring giraffes to different facilities simply because once they reach a certain height it really isn't feasible to transport them, and 2.) this decision probably wasn't entirely up to the zoo. There are worldwide species survival plans in place that encompass all animals of a species kept at accredited zoos and people all over the world who call the shots as to what happens to the animals in these programs. And the main goal of zoos is conservation, not entertainment and so to lose one animal in the interest of maintaining the genetic diversity of the entire species isn't quite so terrible.

Thanks for your responses. I didn't realize that it was an educational dissection, in which case that is better. Totally agree that there was nothing wrong with feeding the meat to the lions either.

I think this is my problem too. The irresponsibility of allowing a surplus pregnancy and birth to happen really bothers me. I also wonder why it took so long to figure out the giraffe was surplus...I believe it was 2 years old.

Like I said above, there are entire committees in charge of who breeds, who is sterilized etc. If the SSP says two animals should be bred, the zoo has to do it. Later down the road, someone else probably decided it wasn't needed or maybe he had an undesirable trait they didn't want propagated in the population. I'm not saying it wasn't irresponsible, but the blame can't be isolated just to the Copenhagen zoo.

I found a dog I'm in love with. He's been at the shelter since December 21 and I've been checking for the last 3 weeks to see if he gets adopted. My apartment doesn't actually allow dogs but it was just sold to a new company. :xf: their pet policy is more lax.

So I had a small birdfeeder on a table on my balcony because I felt bad for all the little critters out there in the cold this winter. After a few days of chickadees at it, the squirrels moved in... which didn't bother me too much because they've had to survive the -30 to -50 degree windchills this winter too. And it kept my cat entertained. But this morning one of the squirrels started fighting with my cat through the glass, so I decided maybe it was time to remove the feeder. Next thing I know, I've got two squirrels on my balcony, fighting over the leftovers scattered on the ground. Yay. I should have known this was a bad idea... no, I did know, and did it anyway. I think my cat may just bust through the window before all these crumbs are eaten up.

Once I petsat for a crazy cat lady in the country. She warned me to keep the bird feeders in her yard full or the squirrels would break into the house.

there are enough horsie people on here that this seems worth reposting - http://www.netposse.com/view_report.asp?reportid=2126
this is one of my neighbors (she's a 1st year) 🙁

What a small world. This girl and I shadowed at the same mixed animal practice in Louisiana--I actually saw her over the Christmas break, but she didn't mention anything...granted, we aren't really that close. So sad to hear this happened, but it's not unusual around those parts. I'll be sure to tell my family to keep a weather eye out.

it's probably just a typo on your part, but what does this mean if it's not? [i only ask because i've learned some weird new words and phrases from people from different parts of the country lately haha]

Oh, not a typo, haha. Might just be a Southern colloquialism? It just means to be extra vigilant. I have a ton of family in and around Farmerville, Downsville, Bernice, etc. But horses are really abundant in that part of the state (as well as people with ill intentions)...Since it's Louisiana state law to microchip horses, hopefully he'll be located soon if the person who stole him tries to sell him...but it's so hard to say. 🙁

Ugh. If you dig in to this, just be prepared to be even more disgusted. The "bullying" page posted this vet's obituary with a bunch of comments including "All that matters now is that Karl (the cat) made it out alive and well for which everyone involved is thankful" - nevermind the HUMAN that died, nah - and says they were worried that the vet might have killed him to get the satisfaction of keeping him from his owner. what the hell.

I thought that it was super terrible. I had something happen to me as an assistant working in practice that came back to bite me and I can say firsthand that it is not fun having people come after you wanting blood. I can't image being vilified by an entire group online along with people protesting outside your door 🙁

Absolutely awful. And the fact that the "Veterinary Abuse Network" (yes, unfortunately this is really a thing) on Facebook is actually celebrating it is so unbelievably disgusting.

I've been thinking lately that I may not want to go into general practice, and this is confirming it.

Obviously I had to go look up that page. Holy crap.

Yep, basically exists entirely to slander and cyber bully vets. Posts their personal information and encourages everyone to harass them. It's absolutely vile.

I reported the page to Facebook for harassment but of course that never does any good. Facebook doesn't take anything down unless it has pictures of naked breasts on it. Still, I had to feel like I was doing something.

I did too! Maybe we can get a trend going.

From looking at comments on the Facebook page (also reported), I'm relieved to see that there are people rallying behind the vet's actions and calling out those that consider themselves "caring" animal advocates.

Edit: Blegh. Stupidly continued reading through more of the posts...so disheartening. I know there are bad apples in every profession, but the pictures these people paint about the profession as a whole just make me sick.

Shouldn't have pulled up that page... I'm just confused. I don't think there is any making sense of that, but wtf? Also reported the page. Wow... just wow.

I received a notification back from FB saying they didn't remove the page because blah blah doesn't break any rules blah.

I will be keeping an eye out for particularly awful posts though and reporting those individually.

I got the same. I clicked the "Give Feedback" link which allowed me to tell them why I don't agree with their decision. I'm almost positive no human being actually reads the reports though - within five minutes of clicking the report link I had a response from Facebook saying that the page will not be removed. On a website as large as Facebook there are probably a million reports every hour. There's no way a single report would be seen and the page read and assessed by an actual person within five minutes.
