Actually, I'd be willing to be that the students from farming backgrounds would be more likely to be guilty of improper post-handling hygiene. A couple of studies by the AVMA have shown large animal practioners to be more lax in their hygiene (hand washing, changing coveralls, etc) than their small animal counter-parts and I think it wouldn't be too far of a stretch to assume that students from farming backgrounds would view it more of a "Well I've done this 100x before with no problems, why am I going to start now?"

(Disclaimer: I am not calling all farmers/large animal vets/farm kids dirty and unhygenic and gross. Please do not read it that way. I'm sure there are people out there who are more conscious of hygiene than some non-farming people.)

People from non-farming backgrounds are more susceptible to the crypto and tend to get severe disease from it vs. those from farming background because those from farming background have most likely already been infected with it. That is what I was saying. I wasn't saying that one group or the other were more or less likely to wash their hands. Just that one group is more likely to be susceptible to and get severe disease from exposure to crypto. 🙂

yup - one of our LA clinicians (who is constantly trying to bribe us to the dark side) likes to say that as a LA clinician, you will NEVER get sick after a while because you'll have immunity to even the worst of the worst just from being around so much zoonotic disease all the time.
 
There is a farm near UTK that you go to regularly on our field services rotation and there is crypto everywhere. I washed my hands at every opportunity, changed out of coveralls before re-entering the truck, did not go anywhere NEAR my face. and still ended up with crypto. I also did not eat or drink anything until I had scrubbed up past my elbows. So it's not always about hygiene. Every group that went there had at least 1 person affected my year.

I worked in a lab with crypto during my undergrad. We were dealing with it all the time. It's highly infective (like only 50 organisms), but I never ended up with it. Good handwashing practices do help, even if they can't 100% prevent it.

oh, I definitely agree. and having prior exposure to it helps, too. The only person in my group that didnt get it was one that had grown up with cows. And subsequently, she was the only one that was not sick the next week on rotation - it's hard to come to rotation when you don't want to be more than 5 ft from a bathroom

So I've heard. When my PI first discovered he was infected he was on a plane. In developing countries where crypto is always around if you can get a kid through the initial infection, they'll have trickle infections for life and not really ever be affected again.
 
So I am liking the new show Nashville. I had given up on dramatic tv and watch mostly comedies. Liking this drama.

My guy falls asleep either on my neck and makes it so I can't breath or he sleeps on my shoulder.

When I alarm goes off he looks for my hands to attack, they are his favorite toys. If hands are unavailable, I guess my face is the next best thing. I have had a bloody nose and a cut lip so far.
