Found this sweet video on youtube:

It's of a mounted police unit demo at the Para Dressage Championships one year. All you horsey people should check it out! It is seriously so cool, I can't imagine how much time was spent training those horses.

Is that a goat, or is it a sheep? I thought it was actually a sheep. No?

The first time someone showed me a "yelling goats" mashup, I had to proclaim through tears of laughter that "they don't even know what a goat is, I don't think."

This baby needs a foster for 1-2 weeks. Gonna meet her on Tuesday. I have a feeling I won't be able to say no.

I feel somehow vindicated in knowing the difference. I know goats make some funny noises, but it's sheep that scream like that. Terrifying creatures, lol.

Lol I had to tell everyone it's a sheep. Though I chuckle every time I see it. And when that song comes on it's all I can hear any more.

So it's a sheep. Right?

I want validation here!

tail appears to be pointed down so sheep it is?

make sure its in the best interest of your other pets too 🙂 and be certain you're not bringing any transmissible diseases into the house!

i was walking down the road this afternoon listening to music, when all of the sudden i hear this horrible noise that sounds as though a car is swerving and then crashing hard into something. startled, i turn around to look for the accident. nope, it was just the cow on the side of the road "mooing." it was by far the craziest noise i've ever heard come out of an animals mouth (and just fyi, it's very common to see sheep, goats, and cows chilling on the side of the road grazing).

The cats don't mind dogs. One of them LOVES Ivy at least. haha And Ivy loves puppies. Much more so than adult dogs.

I'm going to meet her Tuesday to talk about everything. She said it's mange, but not transmissible. Can mange be transmissible? Are there different forms?

I'm gonna read up on it this weekend before bringing her home.

Yes there are different forms and at least one is transmittable.

yes there are different types and one of them is highly contagious and you can be infected. make sure the organization has had a reputable vet do the testing and has treatment started. my experience with the form that you and your pets are "safe" from is that an animal this severely affected will require months and months of treatment and it will also take a few months for the hair to grow in before this animal looks like a normal fluffy pet. one of my classmates fostered a pothound that literally came to her naked and it took a good 3-4 months before her hair came back completely (at least a month before any real improvement could be seen) and the dog has been on medication since october.

cute puppy 🙂 just make sure that you know 100% what you're getting yourself into and make sure the people you're working with have been completely honest with you! my friend had quite a few sleepless nights and poor sleep nights for a few weeks because the foster was so itchy she literally couldnt stop scratching herself to sleep 🙁 poor dog! Sally is in a forever home now though and doing great 🙂

(i guess i'm also super hesitant because i recently adopted a dog that turned out to have some pretty big behavior issues that no one in the rescue was up front about and this was a really reputable group that my mother even volunteers with quite a bit. some times the goals of saving every animal get in the way of making sure that the right thing is done for each animal. my dog could have easily ended up euthanized because the rescue advertised she was good with kids and it became clear pretty fast that this was not the case. had she been adopted to a family with kids, she likely would have bit one of them:-/)

Make sure you have absolute confirmation that it is demodex and not sarcoptic. Sarcoptic is highly contagious, with demodex almost all dogs get it as puppies (lives normally on dogs). Usually their immune system keeps it under control, but sometimes in puppies or immune compromised adult dogs they have problems.

👍sarcoptic mange and you'll have medical bills x4 for treatment for you and your pets plus a lot of discomfort!

I want to back this up and suggest talking to the vet who took the case if you can. Could you possibly work something out with a vet you trust? This might be another option to consider. Reason I say this is because like jmo, I have had issues with rescue groups, only I've been on the adopter's end. Two of three dogs, we have been lied to about what we were receiving, and one I would be terrified for as she also likely would have bitten children if brought to a home with them! Fortunately we're a dog savvy home, but they were all from separate rescues (the one who was upfront with us was a dog adopted from the shelter) so it goes to show that this is practice in more than a few places! Just be wary and speak directly to the source of who is monitoring her treatment. 🙂

I'm gonna ask if I can talk to the vet that saw her. At least I think she's been seen. She'd come with meds if I do take her.

I applied for the summer enrichment program at Michigan, and I'm already dying to know anything! hahaha

So, not asking for medical advice, just opinions.

My friend and I have been looking at Sentinel vs Trifexis. My dog is on Trifexis and she is going to put hers on Sentinel (& Frontline). We've found a lot of bad reviews for Trifexis, but they were all from owners. I can't find anything from vets that think it's bad. The symptoms seems very patterned, which makes it sound more believable than having random problems here and there.

What do you guys think? Any bad experience with Trifexis so far?

Some dogs just can't stomach it. If it is working for your dog there is no reason to change it. I'm putting one of my dogs on that in a little while because I can get it for free and I only have to do one thing for him a month. It's the same reason my other dog is on Advantage multi. She doesn't like to eat (making Trifexis a no-no) but then I only have to apply/give one thing a month. This is a personal opinion as I am not a vet yet. If you are truly concerned I'd give your vet a call.

Some of the reviews talked about their dogs dying. That's why I was wondering. Ivy has only taken it once and I just got her the next one for tonight. I talked to a vet student since I take my pets to the vet school, but was just wondering what other people thought.

There are potential interactions if the animal has microfilaria already. I can't start my previously HW positive dog on this for another few months for that reason. Other than that I don't know why they would die (though I don't know a whole lot). I asked for a script to get the free stuff, and they had to make sure I wouldn't be giving it to my dog for a few months (he's got HG in the mean time).

this. And owners tend to blame whatever medications they can if there pet dies.

That's what I was thinking of and what the students told me. It was just weird that they all had about the same symptoms. But Ivy seems to be doing fine on it.

PP-we use Trifexis at my clinic and have for more than a year. Of all the client pets on it, I can count less than 5 (from several 100's) that have had a reaction. That reaction was vomiting which is the most common side effect. An all in one product is usually cheaper than buying 2 different products like your friend is talking about. She should also advise the clinic if her dog has had a problem with Trifexis so they can tell their rep.

I use Trifexis for all my personal dogs and for my rescue dogs too. I have short haired breeds and hate the mess made by topicals.

Bye!

I will be back in a couple weeks, once exams are over. Having someone else completely change my password so I won't even be able to log in, maybe the TP will finally be complete when I come back....

PP, one of my girls had generalized demodex when we rescued her. This is her before treatment. She was missing most of the hair on her face and down her front legs:

And this is her after about 4 months of daily ivermectin and 3 rounds of amitraz dips. Her fur had almost returned to normal:

And this is her now:

Treating a demodex dog is a big commitment. Since they have suppressed immune systems, they will often get secondary bacterial infections and have other things go wrong, too. Abbie got multiple UTIs and a kidney infection. Once we got her over the demodex, the rest of her issues went away and she has been very healthy ever since. Also, if you take her in, make sure she is spayed because their heat cycles are no bueno for the demodex.

They told me it's demodex and that she had been tested by the vet. I'd only take her for a week or two. It's not a long term commitment. With it being demodex, do you think it's ok to have her around my dog and cats?

I'm pretty sure part of the human population has demodex living in their eyebrows. Usually there's an immune component that makes certain puppies show signs of having demodex. I don't think it's going to be contagious, unless your own animals have immune problems.

as long as your pets are not immunocompromised (including you), all parties should be fine. i know you're not planning on having her long, but if she's just beginning the road to recovery, she may be pretty high maintenance for those couple weeks you have her! 🙂

I love her.

I don't have a cat, but I've heard about this way too many times from my friends with cats

Double + a big dog (they play together). Dog is now tied to the bed post and the cats get locked into the bathroom if they're too loud. It's hard to sleep in a room with all of them..

Here's the scrunchy face.

Her name is Pinky, but I think she should be names Babe. She looks like a little piglet when she sleeps in my lap and she's wild like Babe when she's awake. She's super cute. Really playful but also really cuddly. And the medicating was really easy tonight. Let's hope it always is.

(She's sleeping on my lap again right now. Eating dinner is hard work.)

Ok, this is a serious question. Anyone considered selling their eggs to offset costs of vet school?
