Got a new bookshelf 😀 open to suggestions for organization... And this is probably only 2/3 of my books!
I organize mine by genre per shelf, and then a system that makes sense to me but probably no one else within the shelf. :angelic: I like going more or less from tall to short on the shelf though, it just looks nice.

I'm thinking of doing something similar to this, I also really like the look of tall to short on the shelf. Instead of organizing by genre I might make it somewhat alphabetic though.

I am so tempted to do this...
To tempt you more, the picture that inspired me:

So I just started this T25 business, since I could definitely stand to get more exercise and I figure I can manage 25 minutes in my living room. Apparently, I am woefully out of shape. Unless "round" counts as a shape.

Good on ya! If it's anything like Insanity, you'll see huge results. I did Insanity awhile back and got in wicked shape really quick. I haven't got to try out T25 yet but some of my friends have it and are pretty happy with it.

Friend sent me this great sketch video, quite vet related. Thought I'd share it with y'all:

this one is one of my favourites too:

Ok, how do I tell someone I already know how to do what they are instructing me to do or that I was already told that piece of information without sounding rude or self-centered or unappreciative?

I have tried to tell coworkers that I am not shy and I will ask how to do something if I don't know but that hasn't helped. They think it's rude when I just say, "I know".

Help!

How about using "I'm familiar" rather than "I know"? I usually say "oh yes, I'm familiar with this" when it's something I know well. Otherwise I don't mind the review.

Ive been in situations like that and it's more that they think you dont want to learn from them. Sometimes it's best to just suck it up and listen or ask more involved questions

Yes, I guess it really depends what it is.

My mind jumps to simple things like haltering or handling horses like I had to sit through in school. It's true you never know if they want it done differently.

Thank you for the suggestions! I have a really hard time with this and I know I should just keep my mouth shut, the older I get the harder it is!

So I really need some laptop advice. I have a 4 year old MacBook that is showing its age, it works but it has a lot of little issues. I really don't want to spend much money but I know that I need something good to take notes on. I'm considering an IPad or a new Macbook (I'm a Mac person, although I liked the Samsung tablet a lot too) but am concerned about getting distracted by taking notes on a laptop, and the issues with handwriting on the IPad. Any advice on which is best? I like the idea of an IPad but then if my laptop dies I'm out a lot of money. Thanks guys!!!

I probably won't be a ton of help, because I use both. But, maybe you could think about one of those mini laptops that are cheaper (I'm a mac fan as well, so I understand the concern). It really depends on the class on how I take notes. Mostly, I take notes on my iPad. Then, I'll come home and type up an outline everyday on my laptop. Though, occasionally, a professor will have an outline provided and I can add to that on my laptop while in class. I just bought my iPad right before classes started. I wish you luck.

I also use both a macbook and an iPad. Mine is three years old and is starting to slow down a bit too. I do the opposite of rainheart. I take notes on my macbook in class, then upload them to Dropbox so I can study mostly off of my iPad. When my macbook had to go in for repairs, I used my iPad for notes and it worked fine. Basically anything I really needed to do on my macbook was reasonably possible on my iPad and I was grateful to have it as a backup. Would it have worked as my only computer long term? Maybe, maybe not but I definitely don't regret having both.

Honestly, I like having both a computer and a laptop because it depends on the class. If a professor has say a 200 slide ppt, I'm going to use my laptop because that's a pain to load onto my tablet and takes time. I own a Macbook, which I bought a year ago after I spilled water on my Sony and I don't regret it for a second. I had a my tablet at that point ( Galaxy Note 10.1) but still felt I needed a laptop because I type up study guides and I hadn't found a great keyboard for my tablet yet.

Also, since I see that you're going to Penn, the library has laptops you can rent out for like 4 hours at a time and desktops in the library should you ever need a computer. I have a few classmates who don't even own a laptop and they use those every now and then and take hand written notes in class. So should your Macbook die, you could at least use those short term until you decide if you wanted to buy a new one.

It's good practice for clinical year of vet school. You're essentially treated like an idiot by 70% of the people around you. Even if your clinician trusts you, the techs won't, etc... The best way to get by is to be pleasant and compliant, and not fight their 'help/concern.' Because the worst that can happen if you go along with it is that you hear one more time how it should be done, or confirm that what you're doing is fine. Or you put on a happy face and roll your eyes when no one's looking if what they're preaching isnt right. And you just suck it up and smile and nod when you know something that the intern wants to do is not the best after one polite suggestion/question gets shot down, and twiddle your thumb and wait until the attending tells them exactly what you told them. It can be a little insulting/frustrating at times, but after a while you'll get numb to it. And the one time that this micromanaging saves your butt, it's very humbling.

I know a couple of my classmates use iPads for studying, at least (one rarely comes to class and the other was dropped down from the class ahead of us and only taking anatomy, so I'm not sure if this is relevant to note taking). They have the type of stylus that has a little clear disk at the tip, and their handwriting looks perfectly clear from what I've seen. I think the stylus is probably a little pricey though.

I have one of those and know other people that have them and they seem to work really well. They're about $15-20, but worth it in my opinion.

I had one of these and loved it during the time it worked. DO NOT keep it with your pens or near anything else metal though, it wears out the magnet. I kept it in my backpack with my pens and some coins and it stopped working within a month, which sucked because I paid 50 bucks for it.

You can definitely write on an ipad, it just takes a little practice and a good stylus, and don't expect to be writing out novels on it. It's better for jotting down things in margins, scribbling on diagrams, that sort of thing. That's mostly why I like using the ipad... like taking notes on printed slides, but more efficient and with a search feature. I have a keyboard with my ipad just in case I want to write out more. Earlier in the semester I generally only brought my ipad most days and my macbook on days when I thought I might need it for some reason. It worked pretty well for me. Only reason I stopped and started relying on my macbook again was because I pretty much completely lost my attention span and never took notes in class anyway, so I used the time to work on other things. Oops. Not a good habit to get into. So, yeah, laptops can be distracting, but I personally get very anxious sitting in class trying to pay attention without something to distract me every few minutes, yet plenty of people manage to at least partially pay attention with a laptop in front of them. So, I think the "distraction factor" is really more of a result of how good at paying attention you are in the first place. Anyways, I originally got the ipad last year because my macbook was getting on in years and I was hoping that by not bringing it to school all the time I could extend its life. But, alas, my computer kinda crapped out on me last January regardless, at about 4 years of age. It still works, it just was going so ridiculously slow that I couldn't get anything done efficiently and it was getting overheated and then fan was whirring like crazy all the time. Luckily, my parents helped me out with the computer... especially since I had just replaced my baby <1 year old ipad after it went crashing to its death in the anatomy lab. So moral of the story is... well, I don't know. I rambled a bit there, didn't I? I will say this, if you get a new mac, be aware that the current operating system that comes with new machines works on a very different sort of system or something, and a lot of your old software (ie, an older version of microsoft office) will not work. I've just been using the word processing software that comes with the mac because I was too cheap to replace office, and it has worked fine. Unfortunately, my old version of photoshop doesn't work either, and that isn't so easy or cheap to replace. Just something to keep in mind.

I definitely agree about the stylus being more for scribbling/adding a few little things here and there. With my tablet, I had a keyboard that was what I mostly used for the one class where we didn't have printed notes (searchability is really nice), but I was also able to copy a diagram of, say, the equine digestive tract off to the side with my stylus. I mostly write on printed notes rather than my tablet though because 1) we get printouts anyway, and we have to pay for them so I might as well use them and 2) I don't really want to go to the trouble of putting the powerpoints on my tablet in a way I can mess with them, even if we do always have electronic files for them.

Thanks guys! Thats all very helpful, still not 100% sure what I'm going to do but the advice really helps!!

I'm teching for real at my job (today was my second full day doing so) and every time I'm in a room I'm just terrified I'm doing something wrong or that I will do something wrong. I'm too short for the exam tables so I can never get full control of the little dogs, and the big dogs are often bigger than me. I'm good with cats 😛 I love it but also I have his nagging feeling that the vets might think I'm an idiot or the clients might not like me. Not really a rant though because it's all in my head and the other techs say I'm doing great.

it is indeed expensive...probably less when you live in the caribbean but still. in 14 months i logged 150 dives, did my open water, advanced open water, rescue, divemaster, nitrox, UW photography, night diving, deep, wreck, peak performance buoyancy, and master scuba diver certifications. i love it so much! i really really want to be a vet 3 days a week and a diver 2-3 days a week. that would be my ideal life!

I've worked as a vet assistant since 2011 and I still have moments of this, especially if I'm having a bad day where things are just not going well. Try not to let it get to you.

Could any current students that have made business cards PM me with deets? I feel like I need more information than what I've come up with. No personal information, obviously. Thank you!

Our VBMA club sold them. I have my name, number, email and graduation year on the front and the back has my 3 main interests. If you PM me your email, I'll send you pictures

I've learned that there is such a thing as post-student stress disorder, also known as summer vacation. I had nothing to do for a week, and it was driving me crazy until my jobs started. How do normal have a summer vacay?

Does anyone have any recommendations for comfortable shoes to walk/stand around in all day? I've been running around the vet clinic for hours and hours on end every day, and my tennis shoes just aren't cutting it anymore. My feet are absolutely killing me, and now my back is starting to ache as well. Any suggestions for comfortable shoes are welcome!
