Librela (acknowledge the risks/talk to your vet, this is controversial and not as well loved as Solensia)

@katiemcat I lost my Golden in April after she also developed NSAID induced ulcers. Would have had to discontinue using her meds and she physically couldn't walk without it.

I elected to not try Liberal due to the new-ish concerns for the ROA that orthopedists are seeing. I think the surgeon at Mizzou has started a study and is becoming more concerned with this new development. The ROA can happen in dogs with pre-existing dysplasia of any joint. She had severe hip dysplasia (failed surgery from puppy-hood) and elbow dysplasia. I didn't think the risk was worth it.

I did think Sadie did very well on acupuncture. Went in completely skeptical, but thought she had real measurable improvement in her strength/gait.

Thank you so much for your input! I am definitely extremely weary about putting him on any sort of NSAID again.

We have done 2 PRP injections but I will have to look into stem cell therapy.

For adequan we were loading it and then doing once a month, but I’m thinking we are going to need to increase the frequency.
PMing you because I got schooled on the correct use by the manufacturer when I spoke with their vet a few months back

I’m so sorry for your loss.

He isn’t at the point where he can’t walk but he gets seriously lame on his left front after pretty much any real exercise since I stopped the carprofen.

I have elected to stay away from Librella for similar reasons.

He was seeing our integrative department pretty regularly for underwater treadmill therapy and doing well before I got caught up in NAVLE / holidays. I think it’s time for us to get back on that and maybe try some acupuncture as well!

Thank you for sharing.

Seconding acupuncture. I’m a western medicine girlie like through and through, and have seen tangible benefits from acupuncture in animals and myself.

One thing that the doctors did at my hospital (that the adult doctors can weigh in on) is low dose subq ketamine. A lot of our painfully arthritic or osteosarcoma patients saw real benefit from it and it can be done every 2-4 weeks. Owners never complained about any sedating effect. These days I don’t remember the doses and wouldn’t say them on the internet anyway, but it’s definitely something worth looking into.

Just adding in that my rep/their vet at a CE dinner (prob the same as pp9’s) said that once monthly Adequan actually doesn’t do **** since you’re not giving it as frequently as they rec but ymmv
Yeah this is basically the tldr of what she told me. The drug only lasts for 4-5ish days, the 7 doses q4d is not a 'loading period' and is actually just the 'treatment.'

Also I miss CE dinners. I rarely hear about them happening over here (even though I'm sure there are a ton) but I'm also not in any state/region based orgs right now.

Thank you for reminding me that this is a thing. Might be worth exploring for some of our crunchy creatures at my zoo

There’s not a ton of free stuff for the state VMA so don’t bother with that one (I only am a member bc my corp reimburses for state VMA dues and it doesn’t come out of my CE allotment but I think my region VMA might?) but the region one I’m in for the other side has a decent amount. Some of the ones I go to are straight from the reps emailing my clinic to let us know about it and it’s usually not associated with a VMA.

Ooooh possibly. I do still need 1 more case report and 1 full research paper out in the next.....2.5ish years or so if I want to sit for boards as soon as I hit my 6 years

There ya go! Might even get the company to give you a grant or pay for some of it too.

My grandma has done this my whole life. And even now that I’m 36 she still gets me one every year.
Update no one asked for, but my 36th grandma Christmas ornament was a little bee hive since I got bees this year. It was wooden and engraved with the year and “LastName Honey”.

Hello! 👋🏼 I am researching options and would love to gather some thoughts from yall. I have two kids, 3 and 1. A Doberman. two huge Maine coons. And Hubs is a pilot for a commercial airline. I’m considering renting a long term space at an RV park with our camper trailer (25ft). Our area (WSU Pullman) has a few — but the college town doesn’t have long term stays so I would be at least 20min away from campus. Has anyone lived in a camper trailer with kids and pets before? LMK your experience/thoughts/opinions. I’m concerned about safety, commute, and all the trailer things that could come to issue especially in winter…

You may have better luck either saying what school you’re going to or posting into the school-specific thread.

One of my vet school besties is doing this right now cause her house burned down almost a year ago and they've been waiting for the new one to be built. The home insurance company provided them with a nice permanent modular camper.

She hates it. Two kids (3 and <0), 2 cats, a husband, and a bunch of outdoor dogs. Been the worst experience of her life. She will never do this again. She is >20 mins away from both her jobs and in central Illinois. Her heat has gone out. Her water heater has gone out.

In general, living within 10 miles of the school is the most ideal when youre living in places where you can have significant weather. Town has to basically be shut down for you to be excused depending on the year and circumstances.

I don’t have children but I agree with Bats that, camper aside, living close to school is much better when possible. If nothing else, you’re going to be losing time (30-40 mins a day) you could be spending with your kids or studying on a commute. Sure you can listen to lectures in the car but it’s hard to do active learning while driving. My friend lives in a rural area 20 miles from town; it’s sometimes a logistical challenge for her to get her kids where they need to be. Kids school gets out at 3:30, and you have something at 5, it’s silly to drive 25 minutes home, be home for 30 minutes, and drive 25 minutes back, but the alternative is that she has to find something to entertain them in town for like an hour and half like going to the park and the library…the same thing will probably happen to you as a student that far away. Your kids obviously aren’t school age yet but the oldest is close; 20 miles is a long drive to leave work and go pick up a sick kid from daycare or school. People make it work and I know that drives in cities may take longer to cover much shorter distances, but it’s still an additional hassle that you’re voluntarily taking on.

Campers aren’t made for long term living. It can absolutely be done, but things WILL break. And it’ll probably be at the most inconvenient time.

Oofh you're brave imo. I went to WSU. I had a friend do that except they didn't have kids and they survived just fine. Having a child currently I couldn't really imagine everyone couped up like that, but thats just me. Also pullman winters in a camper seems less ideal to me 😅 plus if you're staying in terrace estates have fun with that hill🙃
You definitely wouldn't be the first or last vet students to do so though!

Was gonna say, outside of drastic situations such as what bats' friend is going through, you couldn't pay me to live in a camper long-term with just my husband. Let alone our pets. I think doing so will add a ton of unnecessary stress to your vet school years.

I mean I can't even imagine trying to get quiet time to study for an exam in that situation with kids? You'd have to be away from home probably more than usual just so you had space/an environment to get your work done. With your husband being an airline pilot, I imagine he's gone quite a lot as well? Just seems like a good way to make your life as hard as possible

Seeking TV/movie suggestions for my maternity leave! We'll probably subscribe to all of the major streaming services for a few months. Nothing scary/gory. I'm not opposed to things that require a lot of thinking, but I'm not sure what shape my brain will be in during that period. I am trying to avoid watching the same handful of shows for the 80th time, lol.

Free on Youtube is what is now my current fav movie of all time.

"Listers: A glimpse into extreme birdwatching".

It is a documentary so freaking good/funny that even people who don't care about birds enjoy it. I've watched it twice in the last 2 weeks just from getting some of my residentmates to watch it.

I had the variety of baby that only contact sleeps for my entire maternity leave so I watched a LOT of Netflix. Mostly shows because I found them easier. Things I recall watching include:

Younger
Nashville
Love is Blind
Great British Bake Off
A Man on the Inside
Next Generation Chef
Nobody Wants This
Running Point
The Big C
The Four Seasons

To start your parenting early: Bluey 🤣

Seriously though:
- The Mandelorian
- Andor
- Battlestar Galatica (never saw the old one, but the newer one was great)
- Doctor Who (Matt Smith is the best)
- How it's Made (been watching with Toddler Bats)

Tracker (cliche but decent)
Rewatch Scrubs in preparation for the new season dropping in February
We love Ghosts for a sitcom also

Tubi has free stuff that's older. Agree with Free on Youtube as well.

Come get on the Heated Rivalry train with the rest of us 😂

The new season is out and it's pretty good!

Meanwhile, I'm over here wrapping presents for a 3 month old...

I definitely didn't get anything big. It's like clothes and new pacifiers. A couple of books and toys that he's actually still a little young for because we were maxing out our registry discount kinda things.

The one special thing I got was a personalized ornament.

I'm watching my kid right now and remembering this conversation so just circling back to this to say that if I could have seen the future, I would have wrapped some burp cloths because these are apparently the best "toy" that we own
