Random Thought: What do adcoms think about interviewees who miss minutiae of formal clothing?

How do adcoms perceive an interviewee that forgets to unbutton his/her jacket when sitting down and/or hasn't cut the stitch holding jacket tails together, or misses any other formality?

I'm pretty sure as long as you show up in a conservatively colored suit and tie (or women showing up in long skirt and blazer) no one cares beyond that.

Believe it or not, there are probably more adcomms who are as clueless about fashion minutia as a 20-something, than not. I am not referring to @gyngyn , of course. He's got the eagle eye about that stuff.

Gyngyn, can you honestly tell us whether you or a fellow Adcom have ever ever rejected an otherwise strong/competitive applicant because they forgot a small/minor clothing detail?

In > 15 years of being on the Adcom, the subject of clothing has come up maybe 2x in our Adcom meetings, and both of these were aout people who had lost thier luggage on the airplane ride in to the interview. Naturally, we give them a bye on what they show up wearing on interview day. Actually, this tended to be in thier favor, as they made the best of it and showed grace under pressure. You can imagine that there are other people out there who would e broken by this, emotionally.

I love my wise, dear colleague @gyngyn, but I suspect that his advice on clothing in these fora has generated a somewhat paranoid mindset on SDN about the interview suit. Granted he had to interview people in matador suits and ice skater outfits, so I can understand his conservatism on the issue!
