Can anyone please post what you feel was the most helpful course (that was not a requirement) for the mcat. Also can you rate each course, in terms of helpfulness, on a scale of 1-10.

ex.

1. Genetics 9/10
2. Anatomy 7/10
etc

I and many others are deciding what classes will be most helpful for the test since its coming up next summer so this will be really helpful. Thanks! 🙂

  1. Obviously all Prereqs: Physics, Biology, Organic Chem, Gen Chem
  2. Physiology 10/10
  3. Genetics 10/10
  4. Cell biology 10/10
  5. Anatomy 0/10
Taking other upper division biology classes are great not necessarily for the factoids you will acquire but for the critical thinking skills you develop

Biochem, Vert. Phys, Cell structure and Genetics are the classes that have helped me the most.

Generally, Anatomy is not so helpful on the MCAT. Physiology is very helpful, but you can get enough physiology from prep books.

I feel like genetics and biochem saved my ass on the MCAT. I never took any physiology, 4 weeks before my MCAT I had no idea what a nephron was or how many compartments the heart had. But learning that stuff is a lot quicker and easier on your own than you think.

Thanks for the help guys!
This is how my schedule is going to look like this year...

FALL
Physics II
Organic II
Genetics
Economics

SPRING
Biochem
Physiology
Cell Molecular Bio
Mcat Study

Do you think that is a good idea or is that too much for the spring semester. If those classes are really hard, I'd rather drop one and focus more on the mcat.

You are planning to take three science classes while studying for MCAT? Don't do it.

If you must take two, then I say do Physiology and either Biochem or Cell Molecular Bio - the easier one of two. People say Biochem is helpful, but at the same time, there are *a lot* of details in Biochem that you don't need for MCAT, and you want to make sure that you can keep the grades up as well.

Yeah, you're right. Three is too much. I guess I will take Physiology and Biochemistry (I hear it makes sense of all the bio and chem you learn which will definitely be helpful). Then again, Cell Bio is a big help too. Hard decisions! At least I have a semester to think about it
