Hi
i am a new member and i was wondering if you could give me links or advices on how to pick between schools.
i am in my third year studying biology at a Canadian University. i have a gpa of 3.8, good volunteer experience at an optometrist office and in the vision centre. i am writing my OAT this summer.
i have Waterloo, Berkley, and Houston University of Optometry as my top priorities.
i have never been to the states and i dont really know the lifestyle and the expenses. i was wondering if there is a link that could help me compare between the universities based on tuition, life expenses throughout the year, education wise. i really do not know which universities to pick as my other options.Any help !!

I'm going to start off assuming you are Canadian.

If you can get into Waterloo stick with waterloo. The difference in tuition is a great deal if you are a Canadian. Unless you're from a fairly well off family and your parents feel like giving 500K to spend on a startup in the US then there is no reason from a money standpoint to go study in the states.

The only reasons I can think of is to get a broader Optometric education in the US (which for the most part you won't be able to use unless you practice in Alberta), or you just feel like getting out of the country for 4 years.

For international student expenses a rough estimate of housing and tuition in bigger cities would run you close to $200,000 USD everything in. Depending on how well you want to live and where the school is, this can go up or down 20,000 USD over the 4 years.

This is all assuming you're Canadian, since almost all US schools have tuition in the 26,000+/year for international students.

I agree that if you're Canadian, you're best best is try to get into Waterloo. From what I have researched and heard, you'll see a lot more if you go to the US in terms of diseases, more patients, etc. but sorry, when it comes down to it, was I willing to make the trade off of spending more money for possibly better education, I picked no since to be honest, my family and I aren't that well off as well as other familial matters I won't go into. I have two optometrists that I see; one that got her education in the states, one that got theirs at UW. The States one is good but new, but the UW one seems to be more knowledgable simply because he has a lot more experience. So in the long run it doesn't really matter since you'll catch up with experience probably.
