Rankings

Stanford has great teams, but who cares about anything other than football and basketball? Those are the sports that get recognition for your school. And since you don't have any football you might as well be thrown out of the rankings. That's why Duke doesn't make the list. And Florida might not have a top 20 med school, but they're football and basketball teams are money. All in all, you can't touch Michigan...not that I'm biased or anything. :D :D :D

Although I didn't like the outcome, it was a very good game. I just hate that a lucky last-second shot was the determiner that time. :)

As for the "competing" teams for the best basketball school, here's some numbers for ya:

1948
1949
1951
1958
1978
1996
1998

...and those are just the years they won the NCAA championship. Who can top seven championships? Anyone? 'Nuff said. :D

Um, Stanford does have a football team -- they were at the Rose Bowl 2 years ago.

Very gracious response Jamie -- I was hoping to rile your inner-Kentucky good ol' boy. The game was a classic, and both teams played amazingly.

SocialistMD, sorry to scare you. I was a huge Duke fan in jr. high and high school, but less so in college (allegiances had to change when I started school on the West). As for the Sooner thing, it's a throwback to my dad and growing up watching OU play. However, you don't need to worry too much -- I'm not much of a football fan. Baseball and basketball are much more my thing. Are you up for a few trips to Enron Field? ;)

I would have to agree with you, socialist. Being a Texas fan, I like Texas and whoever beats OU and Nebraska! I also detest Notre Dame. They're SO overrated!

I agree, Stanford probably has the best overall athletic department. But I don't think the most successful teams are necessarily the most fun for students/spectators to support. I love to see fans that are so involved in the game that it makes a difference in the outcome. Duke students seem to have an absolute blast at their basketball games, and Cameron seems like a pretty intimidating place to play. Coming from Texas A&M, I can honestly say that our football game experiences are second to none. So even though I'll definitely miss Saturday afternoons of football this fall, hopefully I can substitute them for afternoons full of basketball in the spring!

Don't get me wrong cpw, I am not a big UT fan, either. I do like them more than A&M, but my heart still lies with good ol' Mizzou.

lilycat, I wasn't really worried. And you are on for the Astros, especially in September when the Cards come to town (that is, if they finally get their act together).

Here's some responses for the sports conversation (by the way, I love that people here have turned a question about US News rankings into a sports forum!)

In regard to Stanford: I am aware that they are tops in all-around athletic performance. Still, I think places like Michigan and UCLA are better places to be a student spectator. Stanford's best big-time sport (traditionally) is baseball, which isn't that exciting to most student spectators. Their basketball is awesome now, but it won't be for long. Their football team struggles in most years.

In regard to UCLA: I think that when you look at schools that combine awesome athletics with awesome academics, UCLA and Michigan are the most similar, and are the best. Both have great football traditions, UCLA is the best all-time in basketball, Michigan is the best all-time in hockey, and both schools are considered among the very best (in general and in medicine) academically.

Which reminds me, Jamie, you wanna know who can hang with UK in basketball??? I have four letters for you... U-C-L-A. Eleven national championships, which is precisely four more than your precious Wildcats.

And as for you Big 12 football fans, buy a box of tissues and start your crying now, because the party is OVER - the Huskers are hungry, and healthy, and they're gonna shred the entire league just like the good ol' days!

Stanford's 6th-Man Club is an experience in it's own, and makes Maples pretty intimidating to play at as well. I'm not implying that it surpasses Cameron, but it comes pretty close as some Duke grads have told me! About a third of the 1st year med school class were 6th Man members this past year! I agree that the basketball team probably won't be good for much longer, but they've been having a great streak so far, (besides those pesky tournaments!) and this next season I plan to be in the 6th Man section cheering for Casey Jacobsen and yelling insults at the opposing team with my fellow Cardinal fans! :D :D :D

Maybe I underestimated the passion of Cardinal fans!

I've been to the College World Series in Omaha a number of times, and the Stanford fans are tame by comparison to the other teams' fans. I guess it's hard to live up to the enthusiasm of Billy Bob and his beautiful bride Bonnie when they spend their every waking hour tucked away in the bayou discussing whether or not LSU has what it takes to win it all in Omaha this year. Translation: LSU Tiger baseball fans are insane, and awesome. U-Texas baseball fans are close behind.

You forgot my alma mater, Michigan. But I noticed that it was mentioned since then. Also, Michigan State University (where I'm headed now) has a good MD school, good DO school, good VET school and a GREAT basketball team!

As an alumnae, I really hope so... It's just downright embarassing to consistently be beaten by that green team up the street...

However, even if the basketball team continues to dissapoint, we still have Wolverine football to count on!!! Nothing quite like the Big house on a September Day with 110,000 of your closest friends!

And Hockey at Yost is pretty exciting too.

:)

You don't have to be smart about it. ;)

Sorry... too many years listening to the Jim Rome sports talk radio show. Rome likes to get in people's "grills." Apoligies for getting in yours.

Anyway, I think the UK basketball tradition is awesome. The fans there remind me a little of Nebraska football fans - not a lot of other sports happening in the state (except for U of Louisville), so everybody gets behind that 'Cats.

Not to mention a great football team; I'm appaled at how long it took for someone to bring up MSU.

I had written some bad things about Michigan State, but I've decided not to go there. Everyone knows which school is Big Blue and which one is Moo U.

And I hate to say it since I went to school there and love Michigan football, but a baby could fall asleep in the Big House. Those are the quietest 110,000 people in the country. (Best helmets and fight song though)

I've been to about 20 different schools to watch football and I've never seen anything like Florida football.

"Florida Field is the nation's loudest stadium. Take any heavy metal album, crank it, then place your speakers in a tin basement. That sounds like a library compared to The Swamp."
-The Sporting News

"There is no better place than The Swamp! That opening on the big screen with the alligator, it's the best ever. When the Gators run out of the tunnel, it is absolutely the moment of moments in college football"

No problem, I wasn't really offended, and I agree that there is at least one thing to do here in Ky. :)

And from here on, if you can, don't mention Louisville and Kentucky in the same sentence. (Dang, I just did ;))

University of Washington. Great medical school, awesome football; basketball is lacking, though.
