It’s so frustrating how little people care about antibiotic stewardship.
'But our last vet prescribed clavamox/amoxicillin/enrofloxacin whenever we asked and didn't require all of these expensive tests! and they gave every animal a shot of penicillin before they walked out of the door!'

Ya dog with recurrent or persistent UTIs (who knows it’s never been cultured or rechecked)

5 different antibiotics - most recently metronidazole and clavamox concurrently

Dog declining (not eating, tachypnea, back pain, vomiting, PU/PD) - most likely has pyelonephritis now and I’m sure the bacteria is resistant to effing everything

My best friend recently went regulatory/USDA after doing like true 50/50 large/small rural mixed practice for 10 years. Multiple factors went into her choice like stability, retirement and benefits, etc. but “I don’t want to be having to palpate cows in 20 more years” because of the physical aspect was definitely also a factor even though cows were her preferred patients.
Yeah I love cows too probs my number 1 species preference as a whole. Like if i could do dogs and ruminants only id be set but I dont love it enough to sacrafice myself long term.

Like my boss says its nice to work on your own herd but not so much on others after awhile. Kind of like recommending ppl get a job to support their love of animals vs becoming a veterinarian.

Curiosity-did she have to move or was she able to get a remote position? Always considered changing to that as well.

Neither! The regional vet med officer position for the area we live in came open, so she was able to get a job and not have to move. Her ties to the area were a big reason she was competitive, I think. I don’t think she’d have applied if she’d have had to move, they’re very settled here with lots of family (and me haha). She does do a lot of work from home day to day but then goes out to inspect stuff and do fieldwork. She’s only done it since January but seems to like it overall? Pay was actually a bit better and benefits were way better than what she had.

I feel this. If id stayed in Alberta I would have probably been a beef vet at one of the larger cow/calf/feedlot clinics and been very happy. I trained there and could see doing it a long time. Partially though that was because the client base at those places is heavily selected for excellent, high quality facilities that largely decrease a LOT of that wear and tear. Then I moved somewhere where most people don't even have a chute system and I was lucky if they even truly had the animal tied for me. I left mixed practice after 3 years of that because it was blatantly obvious I was going to have to trigger my long term disability plan sooner than later if I tried to continue doing that

Ironically I was just saying to someone the other day if I could just work on horses and cats and make money, that would be my dream job 😂 Cows are fun, though

What in the -
My thoughts exactly. One of our bacteriologists in school called convenia "satan's antibiotic." I think I've used it probably <15 times since graduating and generally cases where PO meds are not a feasible option for whatever reason. NO, your FIC cat does NOT need a 3rd generation cephalosporin!!

This is the biggest issue. The grade doesn't mean anything if you have no guidance. At least if you get an A or an F, you know solidly that you're good or you're not. A C is the weird grey area where you don't know what you don't know.

An actual evaluation should be a requirement
Agree with @battie, for sure.

Some of my colleagues and I like to contribute free teaching/supervision time at AMC ... yanno, paying it forward, that sort of stuff.

Every resident, intern, fellow can get some short mini-clinical rounds in PM from me, and not have to deal with some vague/ambiguous/non-descriptive ratings.

Help them do well and help them succeed!

Took birbs to new vet Monday to get a nail trim before school and to establish care since I just moved. Vet had many concerns, and wanted to run some blood panels on gimpy. Got a call back during orientation today (during lunch thankfully) that he apparently likely has multiple infections, **** albumin, is anemic, horrendous liver values….my poor baby 😭 so now Friday we are going back for an iron shot, running fecal cultures, starting antibiotics, and an xray to check on his organs. I’m sick with worry over the anesthesia, but she seemed reasonably confident that he could handle the anesthesia needed for xray.

I feel so bad for the little guy. He is such a fighter but his poor body just doesn’t want to work. He’s so active and playful despite everything, I had no idea anything was even wrong until she looked at his fecals in the crate and pointed out yellow urates.

My baby 😭 prayer circle he does ok on Friday. I’m going to have to drop him off early in the morning and head straight to school for the last day of orientation. Thankfully it’s a shorter day so I can pick him up as long as he does alright. I asked them to call me when he woke up and leave a message if I couldn’t answer it. UGH. I’m glad we are doing this before school actually starts though

I wish I could just tell him to be healthy and he would listen lol

It’s my first week at my graduate internship. I am not a vet.

I feel so stupid. I have no idea how to use any of the office equipment they asked me to because their printer, etc. are totally different from the one I am used to.

No air conditioning, which I was not aware of and wore long dress pants. I may have to go to Walmart this weekend and see if they have any skirts because I don’t have any (only dress pants and dresses). I could wear my required shirt over one of my dresses, but I think the extra layer may still be too hot, because I am telling you, it’s an oven in there. I was so hot today that I started to feel faint, headachey and overall just sick.

Creepy elevator with a steel door, metal cage and no light that I may be expected to go down with kids if they are on crutches. I am not a very anxious person overall, but I am quite claustrophobic, so here is to hoping no kids hurt themselves doing their fall sports. I got trapped in an elevator once and it dampened my opinion of them.

I'm really struggling with the death of my baby otter. He was orphaned around 4 weeks old and I bottle babied him and handraised him for 6 weeks. He declined suddenly and rapidly (something neurologic, still waiting on the path report) and even though I did everything I could, he passed away in my arms. It's been a few weeks now and I still think of him constantly, I dream about him at night. I sometimes feel hit by the pain all at once and start to cry, especially if I happen to hear the music I played for him often (Sarah McLachlan).

I've lost many animals in my tenure as a zookeeper and in vet but none has ever affected me so deeply. It feels like the worst loss I have ever experienced honestly. It's hard to talk to people about it as well because non-animal people don't really understand it, and they tell me I should try to get over it because it was just an animal and I only had him for 6 weeks. I miss you so much my Jojo, my little milky boy, your abscence is a void, I will spend my whole life waiting to meet you in the endless river.

Aw, I’m so sorry he looks like such a sweet boy! Otters seem like such unique and smart animals that form close bonds. It’s a hard one to lose I’m sure 🙁

I remember once working on a farm and a baby goat was born (she may have aspirated at birth) and either way she wasn’t doing well and it was clear she wasn’t going to make it. She was alive for under 24 hours but I held her in my arms and kept her warm in my jacket for hours in the night until she passed. Didn’t have anywhere near a bond with the goat but I still think about it sometimes years out and rocking her back and forth until she died. Animal loss and grief are 100% valid and even if no one immediately around you can sympathize all us animal folk understand. It stinks that there’s higher and lesser values placed on loss. He was so lucky to have someone who cared for him as much as you …maybe the river he’s swimming in is made of milk?

Jojo's path report came back today. He died from bacterial encephalitis (they weren't able to identify which bacteria exactly). They said based on the slow progression of the infection he likely had contracted it before he came into my care and it insidiously progressed. I wish there had been some way to know or do more. I'm sorry Jojo 😢

Thank you so much, I really appreciate this. The only thing that goat ever knew was love ❤️ I adore the idea that he's swimming in a milk river, he would be very happy!

On my way in to work, I pass only two coffee spots with drive-throughs (a Starbucks and a Timmys). I prefer the Starbucks because the Timmy's has a weird drive through that traps you in the line, so you can't bail if they're taking forever. I don't stop often at all but today I had time and wanted a pink fruity drink.

Line took forever even though there were only two cars in front of me. I can see the first two cars handing multiple drinks back to the barista working the window (and they are different-looking drinks each time, so it seems the barista is just handing them the wrong stuff repeatedly). It took over 10 minutes to get up to the window. I started to think to myself 'wtf, is this person dumb or something?' because I am not nice, but also wtf.

I get up to the window and.....the barista working the window is my ex from high school. We both had that split second moment of like 'oh ****!'

And yes, he tried to hand me the wrong drink too. He started to ask how I was and I just drove off lol. I thought I was far enough away from my high school (different county, very different type of area, like 45min away?) that I'd be safe but NOPE. He was not a good person (at least back then) so definitely not someone I was happy to see.

But also lol @ the fact that I was like 'wtf is wrong with this person' and it ended up being my ex lolol

If I saw my high school ex I would drive off without the drink 🤣

I know I live near my ex and just hope I don't run into him. 😅 Our break up was brutal on him and don't want the awkward, "How are you?", ten years later when I have the life we wanted together and he doesn't (according to mutual friends).
It would be the same way if I ran into the guy I was with just before I met my husband, that was my longer-term HS relationship. The guy I saw today wasn't someone I dated long term...typical HS senior that goes after the freshman girl (me) who doesn't know any better. Now he gets to hand me my (almost incorrect) drink while I go to my doctor job 😉

You guys have Tim Horton's down there? And it sounds exactly as terrible as it is up here
I saw one all the way down in Kentucky once!
And if you can believe it, they're actually worse than the Canadian stores 😂
There’s a couple as far down as Georgia and Texas and I believe 1 in Florida too 😂

I posted this yesterday and deleted it. I am having a crappy week. My grandma died on Monday. I have been stretching myself thin and feeling like I am still not doing enough because I can’t get off work and am spending all of my evenings on the funeral. I am doing a bad job being what my mom needs because my tank is so empty.

I am stress eating a lot too and it’s not okay, especially because I already feel self-conscious about my body.

You know that UF student that was arrested for voyeurism? Well, he's a tOSU student this year....

Apparently it didn't stay on his record because the arrest was botched, and since he "officially" withdrew from UF instead of being expelled, it wasn't anywhere on his record when he applied

I guess not. He has his name changed on socials now but apparently adcom didn't find out until afterward when someone recognized the name

Why are lighting fixtures so freaking expensive? Any why can’t companies get together and make their gold tones match? Finally found some kitchen island pendants I really liked, and they’re $399. And I’d probably need 3 because my kitchen island is massive at 9ft by 4ft. That’s almost my entire lighting budget. I did already pay for my primary bath sconces and the chandelier over the tub out of pocket which gives the lighting budget a little bit of wiggle room, but not that much since we still need a dining chandelier, guest bath lights, and a foyer chandelier/light on top of the kitchen pendants. Ceiling fans and exterior lights are a different line item on the budget but I fear the exterior lighting budget is skimpy for the five fixtures needed there too.

In semi-related news, they’ve been painting the exterior of my house all week. Hopefully done tomorrow and she’ll look like the white farmhouse of my dreams.

My husband, a pilot, is getting ready to leave for a four day work trip. It's my "time of the month". I have the GIANT hershey dark chocolate bar. You know where this is going... Our four year old steals the chocolate bar off of the kitchen island, and I see he has about four little rectangles in his hand (they are not that little to a miniature doxie). Our recently neutered dachshund who was supposed to be back in his crate, ninja steals the chocolate and eats it. OK, no problem-- dad is gone by now, I pack up kids in our SUV, and we start on our way to the vet. SOmething feels off. Our rear tire is completely FLAT. I literally cant leave. UGH. I am calling my family, they are all out of town, fortunately my neighbor is free and was able to take him to vet for me. !! They gave him meds and he successfully expelled said chocolate. They got some SubQ fluids in him too, and now he is home and we have activated charcoal on hand for later. My tire is replaced with a spare too, thanks to Les Schwab coming out for mobile service. What a morning. Happy Thursday!!!!
