At lab where I work, there is a select group of people that have decided to use our 42in stat screen (used to monitor stat turn around time in the lab work) to watch football. I've had a problem with this from the beginning, not that I have a problem with people watching football at work (on their own terminals) or don't like football myself; however, it is wrong to take away a tool that we use for the benefit of our patients that other people are using, and turn it into a big screen projection for the Saints game to watch during hospital time when you should be doing your job.
Two weeks ago, I was working diffs (the screen they use is on the hematology side of the lab) and I stopped them from putting the game on. It pissed of quite a few people, but there was another person who agreed with my judgment and since the stainer was down, she and I used the screen all night to search for missing slides while my diff partner watch the game on his computer screen and complained about how I wouldn't let him watch the game.
Now, last Thursday I was expecting to work in coag, but when I looked at the schedule, I'd been moved to chemistry. I didnt think it was a big deal, but I didn't understand why, until about 7 o'clock. Of course it was only speculation, because I had no proof. I did ask someone about it the next day (I'd been switched with him, and he is one of the main people who instigate the game watching on the big screen). He didn't know anything about it, so I just assumed it was another person, if not him). Saturday I talked to the woman that worked with me the night, and she agreed with me. In fact, there were several people who agreed with me, but didn't say anything because they didn't want anyone one to be mad at them, I guess.
I've been getting more and more irritated by this situation. If they had asked me to move to chemistry side so that they could neglect their job to watch football without disturbing my work ethic, I would have been fine with it, but this was rather insulting. The handwriting/pen color of the name switching on the schedule were a clear indication that it was the person I am closest to and knows me best, was the one who wrote it, so today I asked her about it. And what I found out is that our new supervisor (who has yet to show his usefulness/this could be a whole new rant, but we've been without a supervisor for 2 years and he started about 2 months ago and is too busy trying to be everyone's best friend to make judgment calls that are best for the lab) is the one who requested I be moved!! THE ONE PERSON WHO SHOULD BE STOPPING THIS BULL**** FROM HAPPENING!!! And this man has the NERVE to give me a mediocre employee evaluation (after working here only a month and knowing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about my work ethic!!) when he will put a football game on the stat screen!
I was furious! My friend kept cringing as I expressed my vulgar version of what I will try to cleanly reiterate here, she knew I'd be angry. First did he think I was too stupid to realize that was why I was moved across the lab? And what kind of supervisor is he to allow this kind of behavior? It was fine when I thought it was one of the male techs, but for the supervisor to do this is completely inexcusable! My co-worker agreed with me, and said that she would have gone to the lab manager if it was one of the techs, but since the supervisor is technically her boss, she didn't want to get involved. If I take this to the manager, she will be appalled. I can understand people wanting to watch the game, but just imagine that this is what your staff is doing. Would you approve? I know I am not wrong in this matter.
Okay, I'm done.
