UGH!

Yesterday I stood behind a couple at the grocery store who bought some cod. I was also interested in getting some, but I only wanted a smaller, single serving like piece. The people behind the counter cut piece of the cod filet off for the people in front of me and I took the smaller filet for myself.

I was excited. I like cod.

Today I unwrapped the fish, all happy to be eating some yummy lean protein...what do I find?! A WORM.

Ok. so there is a worm on my fish. I cut the fish in half...THERE ARE RED WORMS INSIDE MY FISH. 😱😱😱

ew. ew. ew. DISGUSTING. ew. ew. ew.

I'm bringing it back to them tomorrow. so nasty. I hope the people in front of me didn't eat their fish.

I will never buy seafood from this place again. 😡

The "Fresh" (yeah right) Grocer on 40th and Walnut (?)

you prob don't shop there cause its in the opposite direction from your apt.

but SOV! don't eat their fish! or at least be careful!

Im sticking to Wegmans from now on. Sure, I have to drive outta the city which is a pain in my deep gluteal muscles (haha anatomy joke...err) but at least I trust them!

Is the pain in your superficial, medial, or deep gluteal muscles?
What is the point of origin and insertion of your pain?
What action does your pain make?

Ok, I'll stop now.

Thanks for the tip, might be too late as I had sushi from there yesterday and today. Maybe I have mercury poisoning and that is why I can't remember a single thing I have studied. 😕

Is the pain in your superficial, medial, or deep gluteal muscles?

Superficial pain, moving to a medial pain and a deeper pain as it exits the digestive tract.

What is the point of origin and insertion of your pain?

Fish and mouth respectively.

What action does your pain make?

Projectile vomiting. With high accuracy.

lol very funny everyone!

btw- i realized just now, a couple hrs after i posted that right? i'm sure i already heard you tell that story in person. it may have even been recently but my brain is so foggy. i literally feel like i am pushing out all past memories to make room for anatomy info. tonight i got that "glazed" eye feeling at 9pm lol this isn't even our "exam cram" time!! i'm not sure my eyes can last til then, but..I STILL LOVE VET SCHOOL lol

I heard a parasitologist speak at a conference. He talked about PEI mussels and how they taste very good. Well, someone discovered that most of these mussels were infected with nematodes. They were harmless to humans. They decided to raise some anyway that did not have the parasites. People said they tasted aweful. They stopped getting rid of the parasites and people continued to eat the mussels. The end.

As long as they aren't living and as long as you don't eat the fish raw, I think you're going to be okay, but maybe the fish people at the market are parasitologists and know something I don't.

People eat grilled tape worms cysts all the time whenever they enjoy a nice piece of steak or pork. There are types of nematodes commonly found in fish that fishermen have special names for. They say it gives it flavor!

I think I am actually going to throw up.

The moral is: don't take parasitology. You will lock yourself in your house and starve to death.

I took it undergrad last semester. Holy **** is all I have to say. My main mode of studying was watching wilderness survival shows (Man vs wild, etc) and going "OMG DO YOU KNOW WHAT PARASITES YOU COULD GET FROM THAT WATER/FISH/DEAD CARCASS" in whatever location they were. :barf:
I mean seriously, how are these guys not DED of naegleria?

Our prof kinda emphasized that getting a deadly parasite in North American is rare as long as we use common sense.

Well, I live in a cooler climate so a lot of the really nasty things just don't thrive up here.

the lady behind me in the checkout line at a retail shop was tailgating. She thought she would get to a cash register faster if she was close enough so i could feel her breath on my neck. When she actually got shoulder to shoulder with me I gave her a hard look. She's lucky my elbow didn't crack her in the ribs. Back off biotch!

I didn't have much time between class and work today, so I layed down on the couch to watch some Netflix on my Wii. Going well until about 2:10 when it started searching for a connection. I checked my modem and the DSL light was flashing in red. I pulled out my laptop and had all green bars, but no connection. I have to be at work for 3, but I called tech support anyway (I really should have known this would make me late for work).

He starts asking me about the weather and all this other random nonsence crap that 'I' might have done to disturb the connection. He reset it about 4 times, I tell him, I have to be at work soon and I will call back, "Wait! Lets do this!" he keeps going and going...

FINALLY, at about 2:55 he tells me I either need a new modem or some kind of filter, because my line is being blocked, by something that could not be explained. I have to have someone come out. Greeeeaaat. We have two brackets to choose from 8-12 (I have class at 9) and 1-5 (I have to be at work for 3). Can't you just come at 11? 'I'm sorry ma'am, it's a fixed window.' ##!&^@#!! expletive!!! So now I have to miss class tomorrow morning so wait from someone to fix my internet connection that I just got 2 weeks ago (I've lived without cable or internet for about 2 years) because I need it for school because I have online homework that I REALLY would have liked to work on tomorrow before work. They better come early so it will be worth me missing class over. Luckily, it's a basic bio and I am a biology post-bacc so it's easy peasy. But it's the principle damnit!!

I ended up driving to work on the phone with the guy and calling my dad immediately after to vent, dads are great for that! (at least mine is) and in all the chaos, I forgot to bring my chem book to work with me...grumble grumble...😡

Well, it gave me time to play on this forum .

A retail shop eh?

Actually in some cultures it's rude not to stand right up behind someone. Not sure if Scotland is one of those places.

Given the predominance of kilts, I would think not.

So, it's September 10th. My VMCAS is submitted. My supplementals are submitted. And every time I check in with VMCAS and click on the Evaluators, all 3 of them just say "New." Nobody has turned in a letter. Nobody has even started apparently.

Yes, I have sent reminders, and will continue to do so.

Has anybody on this forum not gotten into vet school because their evaluators didn't come through? My future is completely in the hands of 3 other people, and beyond continuous nudging, there's nothing I can do about it.

AAHHHHHHHH!:bang:

I felt the same way 🙂 You just have to trust that they'll come through! You've gotten everything done early (way to go!) and they have time! They're writing letters of rec for you, so odds are they know how hard you've worked. Unless it's getting to a week or so before VMCAS is actually due, don't stress it!

I know it's frustrating! I have one writer who does them IMMEDIATELY. I mean, literally the day he got the emails, both this year and last year. My primary vet one is done, thankfully, I think mostly because I see her every day and she knows I'm freaking out. Two of my vets haven't done them yet, but I know that with reminding they will. My last evaluator, another academic one, is a flake. FLAKE. I spent him weekly reminders last year starting in September. This year, I hadn't heard from him since June. I sent him a polite "hey did you get the email" email about it in July - no response. I finally gave up and asked a new person to do it, who I think will give me a stronger recommendation anyways since I've had him for harder classes and more recently.

Literally 3 hours after I deleted the old and added the new, my old elor writer emailed me going "Omg, is it too late? I've been so busy! can I still do it?!" *headdesk*:smack: And I'm maxed out on evaluators.

I feel like I am not doing a good job at the vet clinic I am working at. It's my first receptionist position, I can't read the doctors handwriting, and I don't know all these things the others do- like what meds need to be taken with food, generic names for meds doctors write, etc etc... I ask for help and the other girls seem annoyed... maybe I am being hard on myself but I feel like I'm sucking- a lot! I don't know if all vet hospitals are this unorganized or if it's just this one... I feel like they aren't training me very well at all and everything is a mess. They also haven't gotten my W2 done yet, so I have worked here almost a month for free... !!

Also, my room mates are making it impossible to keep this dog I rescued 9 months ago and its tearing me up inside thinking about having to rehome her. They complain about her daily, they both are home CONSTANTLY while I work 10 hour days. They won't even help me out by taking her outside, I have to hire a dog walker to do it... and I'm broke. I suppose if I can find a better home for her it's best for everyone but I love her 🙁

🙁 and to make matters worse that HUGE fire in Colorado is 2 miles from my family's farm. They've evacuated already, thank goodness but I don't want to lose the house I grew up in...

the end.

Sorry about the job, roommates, and doggy... but also sorry about your family's home! I am probably 6 or so miles from the fire, and not in the mountains so I was not personally affected (other than wicked air quality for a few days), but I have several friends who were also evacuated and one friend who has lost her home (she was able to evacuate her dogs thankfully). It is really terrible. But I believe it is getting to the point of containment and no more houses have been lost in the last few days (I think the total is standing around 170 houses lost) thankfully. I hope your family's farm was spared and that your parents will be able to return home soon.

Thank you! It looks like they will be able to move back in tomorrow, thank goodness! I was crying seeing the videos on youtube of the beautiful mountains burning... 🙁 I miss Colorado so so much...

My husband (the self professed dog-disliker) fell in love with a chihuahua this weekend and I think it's staying...

LORs SUCK

Am I the only one who feels this way? It's like, wait a second....we aren't going to make a decision about you based on you.....we need you to go out and find people we don't know who are going to write us a letter on your behalf.

It's like a note from my Mom saying, 'RobDude is cool! Hang out with him' that I can pass around to other kids in elementary school.

Nobody ever wakes up and says, 'Gee, I wish I had the opportunity to write more letters of recommendations'. The people we ask don't really *want* to write the letters, and virtually nobody says, 'No, I won't write you a letter'. Then you have to sit and wait, anxiously, for them to post their letter, because, if they don't - you are screwed.

How about we just treat adults like adults and stand on our own two feet?

(You might disagree this post, but ummm, this really smart guy wrote a letter of recommendation saying you should agree with me!)

/Rant Over

so last night i got bit by my cat. he's an evil little ****er when he wants to be and likes to play REALLY rough. anyway, i woke up and had about 10 places he drew blood on my hand (he generally tries to bite me at night to play/get me up to feed him...usually it doesn't draw blood or anything it just is obnoxious but last night he just really wanted attention/was feeling angry, apparently...but i digress)
today after classes i went to the health center on campus to get antibiotics, and in addition, just during the normal pulse/blood pressure check they found out i have an abnormal heart rate (tachycardia) and that my heart was beating way too fast. so they did an EKG which showed normal rhythm but it's still going 120 bpm instead of the normal 60-80 bpm, so i have to go to a cardiologist.
the only dates the cardiologist can get me in are a month from now...both dates are days i have exams, during the exam time-block. awesome.
AND i had to get a tetanus booster today because i wasn't up to date and i got bit...so i'm expecting serious arm pain for the next few days.
did i mention i have a histology exam in 48 hours? awesome. so glad this thread is here to vent.

How about we just treat adults like adults and stand on our own two feet?

Adults of all sorts rely a lot on the experiences and recommendations of other people. That's part of being a social species. Letters of recommendation are extremely important, and I can't fathom a way in which they are anything but helpful.

I kind of had the same response on reading Robdude's post, but then thought about it and concluded it would be ridiculous to start critiquing other people's rants. One persons major annoyance is another's happiness. Give the guy a break and let him rant..

Hmmm, I am now criticizing your rant? Am I being inconsistent as usual?

Uh, I guess that is my rant: hating my own hypocrisy:laugh:

Bye bye.

At lab where I work, there is a select group of people that have decided to use our 42in stat screen (used to monitor stat turn around time in the lab work) to watch football. I've had a problem with this from the beginning, not that I have a problem with people watching football at work (on their own terminals) or don't like football myself; however, it is wrong to take away a tool that we use for the benefit of our patients that other people are using, and turn it into a big screen projection for the Saints game to watch during hospital time when you should be doing your job.

Two weeks ago, I was working diffs (the screen they use is on the hematology side of the lab) and I stopped them from putting the game on. It pissed of quite a few people, but there was another person who agreed with my judgment and since the stainer was down, she and I used the screen all night to search for missing slides while my diff partner watch the game on his computer screen and complained about how I wouldn't let him watch the game.

Now, last Thursday I was expecting to work in coag, but when I looked at the schedule, I'd been moved to chemistry. I didnt think it was a big deal, but I didn't understand why, until about 7 o'clock. Of course it was only speculation, because I had no proof. I did ask someone about it the next day (I'd been switched with him, and he is one of the main people who instigate the game watching on the big screen). He didn't know anything about it, so I just assumed it was another person, if not him). Saturday I talked to the woman that worked with me the night, and she agreed with me. In fact, there were several people who agreed with me, but didn't say anything because they didn't want anyone one to be mad at them, I guess.

I've been getting more and more irritated by this situation. If they had asked me to move to chemistry side so that they could neglect their job to watch football without disturbing my work ethic, I would have been fine with it, but this was rather insulting. The handwriting/pen color of the name switching on the schedule were a clear indication that it was the person I am closest to and knows me best, was the one who wrote it, so today I asked her about it. And what I found out is that our new supervisor (who has yet to show his usefulness/this could be a whole new rant, but we've been without a supervisor for 2 years and he started about 2 months ago and is too busy trying to be everyone's best friend to make judgment calls that are best for the lab) is the one who requested I be moved!! THE ONE PERSON WHO SHOULD BE STOPPING THIS BULL**** FROM HAPPENING!!! And this man has the NERVE to give me a mediocre employee evaluation (after working here only a month and knowing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about my work ethic!!) when he will put a football game on the stat screen!

I was furious! My friend kept cringing as I expressed my vulgar version of what I will try to cleanly reiterate here, she knew I'd be angry. First did he think I was too stupid to realize that was why I was moved across the lab? And what kind of supervisor is he to allow this kind of behavior? It was fine when I thought it was one of the male techs, but for the supervisor to do this is completely inexcusable! My co-worker agreed with me, and said that she would have gone to the lab manager if it was one of the techs, but since the supervisor is technically her boss, she didn't want to get involved. If I take this to the manager, she will be appalled. I can understand people wanting to watch the game, but just imagine that this is what your staff is doing. Would you approve? I know I am not wrong in this matter.

Okay, I'm done.

I hate HATE the variety of requirements. I would love to apply to UC Davis and Oregon, but I don't have a physiology class. I'm a non-trad who works full time, and it was both physically and financially impossible to fit in Human Anat&Phys this fall. The only offering in the spring is part 2 of the course, which frankly is stupid for such a large university. Mammalian physiology, and other options listed in our course catalog, are apparently only offered when all the planets align properly, aka never. So, definitely not this spring. I could take it this spring at the community college, but that won't fulfill UC davis' requirement. I am absolutely tearing my hair out over this. It is SO EFFING FRUSTRATING because I basically have 8 years of undergrad coursework and it seems completely absurd that I can't apply to a few schools because I'm missing one stupid class when I've taken at least 5 semesters worth of upper level biology.

Arrrrrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhh! :diebanana:

I hate HATE the variety of requirements.

It IS frustrating. Makes me wish that there was one set of requirements to apply to any vet school. After all, once you're in, you're all pretty much taking the same classes. However, I guess the only positive side to it is that it reduces the competition to get in to some schools b/c not everyone has the appropriate list of classes on their transcript. I've got a number of places I can't apply to b/c I'm missing pre-req's.

 ...............:diebanana:................. :meanie:

Whyever, I don't think they'll even take an anatomy/phys combo! Mine was required for degree, plus I started out an ansci major, and my school requires nutrition, and I took speech and tech writing. So the only limiting factor for me is calc. I'm not sure being able to apply to Davis is really gonna make a difference for me though... Lol.

And my rant... I'm a quarter of a century old today. And I have to wait two weeks for my big present from the husband because it's "taking longer than expected." Arg!

Okay, I realize that's not much to complain about. But it's my birthday, and I'll bitch if I want to. :d

Happy birthday TT! It's your birthday and you'll cry if you want to.

I emailed UC Davis to see what they say about the anat/phys course anyways. You know, just for fun. Also because if I have to look at Ohio's essays ONE MORE TIME I'm going to gouge my eyeballs out with a spork.

what about an online phys course? I know UNE offers one, and I'm sure other schools do as well.

I'm actually spending the morning looking for one...will have to continue searching when I get back from my staff meeting. Stupid website navigation.

Oh pre-reqs... I need to rant about those too.

I hate some of the pre-reqs I'm fulfilling to even apply to my home state. I officially am paying the I am a Texas Resident attending another state's school tax, because sitting in a 100 level class that is an introductory course for all new animal science majors, as the senior biomed major who has not only had nutrition (where we talked about cows almost exclusively, thank you animal science department) but an entire semester of domestic anatomy, physiology, and immunology.... The only way I make it through that 8am every MWF is by making comments about how STUPID the entire thing is. I'm not learning ANYTHING. There is NO REASON I should have to take this class. Absolutely no reason. Zero. Zilch. I wish someone in that admissions department would understand me when I call saying is there ANYTHING out of this list of other, many classes I have taken you will accept instead. I mean, I can understand that they're freshman, they're naive and still have a lot to learn, but when we're talking about pigs and you tell the class, "I don't eat pigs because they eat trash" and you don't mean like "poor quality food", you mean literally, the garbage I throw in my trash can, you are no longer just not knowledgeable yet, you are ridiculous.

Although the one that tops that is that VITAMIN D is apparently an invisible substance that rains from the sky in the form of sunshine and magically absorbs through our skin. And covers everything. Because they couldn't understand chemical reactions or anything of the sort. No way. Vitamin D is invisible and falls out of the sun. Yep.

I have taken to bringing my latest book I am reading with me and only half paying attention to make sure there isnt some fluke where he says something I haven't already spent an entire upper division class learning about.

And I really wish I wasn't taking biochem from a guy with a prescription for medicinal mary jane with a bunch of biochemistry majors after having already taken four credits of survey of biochem, and I really wish they would have accepted my offer to take a two credit lab, because learning the same things I've already paid to learn over the past couple years in TWO classes really, really blows.

UGH. Okay, I feel better now. And now I'm going to be late to my office hours. Oh well. XD

Happy birthday TT 😀

I will never buy seafood from this place again. 😡

NOOO that's disgusting but I am so glad you wrote it so I can avoid the same mistake! And the Fresh Grocer is supposed to be all healthy hipster food not wormy food!

I will continue to shop at PathMark I guess 🙂

The program for our online homework is BEYOND terrible. It's taken like 5 minutes to load and is SO. SLOW. I understand wanting to give homework and wanting to grade it easily as the instructor but come on, man. This is ridiculous and I want to leave in like half an hour to ride. UGH.

My herpetology teacher told us last week in lab that we would have to know the common name or the scientific name for our practical on Thursday. He told us today in lecture that we have to know both the common name and the scientific name. By our practical on Thursday. For 54 species.

I know what I'm doing for the next 48 hours...

1st off: Happy B-day TT!

2ndly: Re UCDavis, Physiology requirement...
Everyone, take a deep breath and don't freak out....

UCDavis is actually very accommodating when it comes to this requirement.. From UCLA, for example, they take comparative anatomy.... I couldn't take that class and they would accept anatomy/phys class, they also take a human physiology class from UC Berkeley extension (which may be on line), and heard last year from others that they accepted on-line substitute. They also allow you to take the class in the summer if necessary (after you have been admitted you can clean it up). They will tell you what classes you need AFTER admittance and they seem to want to work with you to meet that requirement.

Of course, no promises, but worry about getting in first. There are many ways to meet the requirement and give them time and they will help you there.

Ok, take another deep breath, and start obsessing about something else...

They will tell you what classes you need AFTER admittance and they seem to want to work with you to meet that requirement.

Oo oo I like hearing this, I really hope it's true. I'm having an issue with an ochem prereq and it would be so incredibly amazing if I didn't have to take it unless I get accepted and could take it during the summer. I emailed them a week ago about the prereq but haven't heard back... are they lenient about just the physio one or prereqs in general in terms of time of completion?

I wouldn't say they are "lenient" about pre-reqs. They just seem willing to take reasonable substitutes...

It seems like the physio is a tough one that many people have to work around. I am not so sure about how you intend to work around ochem requirements but.... it couldn't hurt to ask.

Happy Birthday TT!

Was going to wish you one on FB but then thought you might have a better chance of seeing it here. 😉

Thanks a bunch, guys!

I'd have noticed either way, though there is certainly a lot going on my FB wall right now.

So I actually get my present tomorrow - he was just jerking me around. We have to go pick it up and he "thinks it will fit in my car"... ummm okay. Lol.

Happy birthday!! 😀 I love surprises, that's really sweet he's being all sneaky like that... hahaha

Well you dern sure better come back tomorrow and tell us all what it is!

LOL! I did eat sushi! And the peaches aren't ripe yet!

I'm here because I'm like, "studying." And "working on supplementals." (Which means I'm not really doing either, but ya know.)

MAJOR RANT. and I hope I do not offend anyone... as in those on this forum that are attending UTK

So after weeks of leaving messages and trying to get in touch with the school regarding my current Biochemistry course (being taken at a legitimate university, but only 3.0 and not 4.0 credits), I finally get a brief message this evening while I was at work. UTK requires a 4.0 credit course, but does not require a lab. Most schools this translates as 3.0 credits or if you're like my undergrad, 1.0 credit unit. Apparently, my course only covers 40-50% of the necessary material that the Biochem department requires a prereq course to have. How many weeks do we have left? Oh right, 2. So now I have to scratch UTK (which was very high up on my list). A suggestion they gave me was to take the course somewhere else. I am already a few weeks into the class and its not as if I am surrounded by universities. I realize schools are swamped with questions, but with something this important, I should have been notified sooner. I plan on calling them tomorrow to sort out the details but this is outrageous and I just needed to write it out and vent a bit.
Sorry if I happen to offend to UTK vet students in the meantime. I just don't understand how a legitimate biochemistry course (with an organic chem as a prereq for it) can be insufficient?!
so frustrated 😡
